InXile Entertainment’s latest adventure in the post-apocalyptic lands of the USA, Wasteland 3, came out today, bringing with it a big bizarre statue of a robo-Ronald Reagan. The RPG will have you fill the boots of a lone Ranger, tasked with reestablishing society in the wastes of Colorado. It’s a bit like old school Fallout, what with being a story-driven RPG full of turn-based tactical shoot-outs. It’s worth noting that the original Wasteland inspired the original Fallout games, which have in-turn inspired the new Wasteland games. Ah, the circle of life.

It’s a big boy, gunslingers, but not a great boy. Wasteland 3 is okay, passable, middling. It should be commended for its sheer heft, its days-long bulkiness no doubt welcome in the face of our own ongoing apocalypse, but that doesn’t make its writing any less puerile, nor its combat any less uninspired. For some, this in-jokey game of tactics and chin-wagging will fill a vacant space in life, multiple evenings of rambling nostalgia-heavy roleplay echoing the Fallouts and Wastelands of yesteryear. But for others like me, it’s a vestigial fragment of a reanimated genre, a game with by-the-numbers battling that wears thin long before its consequence-baiting storytelling has the chance to pop.

It’s dangerous out there, dontcha know? Better to go through Wasteland 3 with company, I reckon. Ahead of next week’s launch, a new trailer for InXile’s frozen apocalypse invites you to bring a buddy along for the ride. Mind, you mind want to make sure they’re a real pal before they stab you in the back, make friends with all your enemies, and swap your power armour for pyjamas.

Like most post-apocalyptic romps, Wasteland 3‘s badlands weren’t entirely emptied by the end of the world. Speaking in a developer diary this week, studio head Brian Fargo and senior writer Nathan Long ran through bodyguards, crime-lords and presidential death cults the Rangers might face during their upcoming Colorado road trip – and the new conversation system that’ll get you right up in their irradiated faces.

Post-apocalyptic RPG Wasteland Remastered – which just looks a Wasteland remake let’s be honest – has bagged itself a release date, so you’ll be able to get your hands on it on February 15th. InXile Entertainment s remaster was announced back in June 2018, and it’s essentially a big old re-do of everything from the original 1988 game, with all-new audio and graphics.

I thought the post-apocalyptic horrors of Wasteland 3 couldn’t surprise me but goodness me, I’m chilled to the core. I’ve seen all the usual torments–nuclear winter, cannibalism, slavery, torture, famine–but I was not prepared for the sight of a giant robotic Ronald Reagan. My god, what have we done? We must change our ways before it’s too late. We can’t let this vision become reality. The vision’s coming up fast too, with InXile today announcing a launch date of May 19th, 2020.
