Hiya friends! It's been far too long since a post or update on Warcube, so let's talk! 🙂

First off, thank you for being SO patient with me 😌
It really does mean a lot to me. Warcube is truly on my mind. I think about it every day, and I really want to finish it, and have every motivation to continue and do so. But development is officially on pause for right now.

As some of you may know, apart from life being it's usual busy (the joke is that I have like 3,348 kids by now lol) the game has been getting a huge restructuring. Like we're talking a complete foundational rebuild. This doesn't mean like crazy new graphics or anything like that, but more the *base* that the game is built on is getting changed. It's a bit like moving a house that's already been built. Which is especially tricky with a game like Warcube, that has almost 3 years of work and updates. But I feel (and some recent reviews certain support) that the game where it stands is broken. So my plan is to see if I can currently pause purchases of the game, and anyone who would like to take advantage of Steam's return policy won't offend me at all, I totally get it and would encourage you to 🙂 and if you have the game, don't worry you'll still be able to play it and will get first access to the Warcube revamp!

But don't get me wrong, I don't say this as an excuse, but a genuine reason as to why many of the reported bugs are starting to stack up. I'm definitely stretched more than thin between maintaining the old foundation, and building the new one. And if I'm being honest, like you, I'm way more excited in life about the future than the past 😄 (except when it comes to medieval stuff, I think current life could use a lot more trebuchets in it nowadays! Scifi trebuchets for the win!)

The new version of Warcube is going to play very similar and yet different than the current version.
Worry not, the beloved slow motion epic combat and charming yells of your troops in battle is staying. But the sprawling world map currently in the game will be retired, and in it's place will be a new more manageable map that can be interacted with in more fun and meaningful ways. In addition, the game will become much more of a roguelite than it is currently, with replayability and being put into cool combat scenarios a key feature. And as everyone knows, I'm a huge fan of easter eggs and surprising people, so there will be plenty of things to discover 😉

Another important reason the game is paused
is that I have a some super fun projects in the works which I'm lucky to have more development support on than Warcube. Working on these projects helps me get better at working on Warcube. For example so far it's given me a chance to work on things like mission structure, special moves, localization, upgrading things in general, and customization! Which we can all agree are super great things I've struggled with integrated into Warcube across Early Access so far. And of course while a lot can change, unofficially I think it's only fair that people who have already purchased Warcube should get any game I make that comes out *before* Warcube, for free. All they'll have to do is ask me 🙂

One of those projects hasn't been officially announced yet, but since we're friends I'll give you a sneak peek 😜 I'd like you to meet Coin Hogs! A first person action game that takes place above the clouds, where you'll fly airships (that have trebuchets on them), siege castles in the sky, and take care of your home which also happens to be a tavern. If that sounds like your sort of thing, sign up here to get access to the alpha before anyone else 💪! The current Warcube Discord is also a great place to follow along!

Speaking of the Warcube Discord...
(which is a super lovely place full of kind and caring people who are absolute warriors) Soon the server will be transitioning into a company server! Never would I have thought I'd have multiple games being made 😂 but here we are! So in a few weeks I'm proud to announce the Warcube Discord will officially become the JAM RASCALS Discord! It'll be the same fun place full of nice friends, questionably good puns, and great emojis! All Rascals welcome! 😁

Hiya Friends! 👋

Thanks for being patient with me these past few months, I wanted to give a quick status update to let you know that I'm alive and cranking along :D My hope is that I'll be able to do one of these every week or so showing off or at least talking about progress, because otherwise I turn into a hermit💪

Let me answer some quick questions I've gotten! ✍

Are you alive?!
In short. YES!

Is... is... is the GAME alive?!
YES! Though I have been slow because I've had the lucky opportunity to kick off a super secret project at the company I work at... more on that later 😉

So then what's going on...?
I'm working on reworking the backbone of the game, this will really end up changing how the game is played so much, and I'm starting with the map. Currently the map is this sort of vague hodge podge of exploration and wannabe sandbox style gameplay with a shaky form of progression. I'd like to shift it to something a little bit more clear, so whether you play for 10 hours straight or pop in every couple months you'll know exactly what to do.

At it's core, the stages are going to be a bit staggered, where for example in this picture, you own the blue, and the white zones are levels ready to be played, and the red ones are levels you are not able to play yet. Of course you can still explore around some portions of the map that are not locked by a geographic reason (such as a bridge that gets raised once you take over the location), but by and large the map will "slowly" open up vs. always be open like how it is now. Also, worry not, there will still be secret locations 😉


My hope is that changing the map will help me create a process for more objectively working on the game 💪

Next post will be about tentative changes to how armies and NPC's work ✨

Happy April Fools my friends!
Introducing a remix on last years "Castle Clicker" Mobile Minigame 🏰 Though rest assured, this time I'm not entirely swapping out the game entirely. Because last time I did so it resulted in a few bad reviews like this one, poor soul thought I would actually swap the game over to a clicker 😂

Ahhh well, such is life! That being said... if you haven't reviewed the game already, please go be a good Warling and do so to help the rebellion! It helps the Steam Gods determine who gets show Warcube, which is always crazy helpful!🙏

Welcome to the bottom paragraph folks! This update was a lot of fun to put together :D I was going to do Warcube FPS Edition, but honestly, it's too much fun, it deserves it own game 😂 though maybe ya'll can test it next year haha 😁 I've been getting a system and schedule together for pushing forward with the game, as well as address bugs and performance. There seems to have been a pretty big performance hit from Update 55, and I'm still trying to figure out exactly what could have caused it. Thanks for being patient with me while I do so, I take things like that pretty seriously. Because while I love slowmo, I don't consider 10fps to be slowmo 😜Thanks for reading, it means a lot to me, give a shout anytime friends!

Introducing "Normal Update Numbers"
I've ditched boring update names like "0.4.15v1" for something that you know, sounds like a human wrote it 😉 Like a good old regular number that corresponds with what update it is! Though I will say, I don't actually know if this is my 55th update, but it's gotta be somewhere around there, or even more (we should ask Myriad 🤷‍♂️)

State Of Warcube
Welcome to the very first 'State Of Warcube' post. After nearly a year of no major update, I feel this is totally necessary. But before I start, I just want to say how incredibly thankful I am to every person who reached out to me on every platform (specially my Discord fam) with encouragement, kind words, and gentle prods of 'when will you update things?' as well as the ever unique 'hello?' (looking at you Bup). Suffice to say it's probably easier if I give a timeline of the past year to better put things into perspective. But to be succinct for you TL;DR folks out there: I really broke the game and started also working full-time.

1. November 2018: Was working on my first boss fight and physically moving states
2. December 2018: Moved, published a beta build, and started a full-time job.
3. January-March 2019: Broke the game by upgrading unity and not backing things up, like a fool
4. April - August 2019: Patched nearly every broken scene in the game to get it where things were roughly before.
5. Sept - December 2019: Worked way through backlog of bugs amidst full-time job. Again, I really struggle with time management at this point.
6. January - February 2020: Had another kid, finished fixing the arena, publishing beta builds again.
7. Now: Published the first of many updates for the 2020 year, featuring basically everything the game had in it before, as well as a few new things ;)

Early Access
I've recently gone through and looked through my original Early Access descriptions on Steam (oof) and have decided I need to revamp them to better communicate my goals with the game, and my sincerity to finishing it. Everyone who knows me will understand the grit I have with finishing projects, and also my complete paralysis that comes from wanting to DO EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. This is on my list to do for next week 😁 (good timing with your message Myriad!)So bear with me, and if my new descriptions don't fit your experience with owning the game these past few years, let me know :)

Big Stuff
- Arena mode is back
- New start screen
- Mac version is stalled for a bit due to some new build criteria via Apple

Small Stuff
- A million bugs have been fixed
- Slight performance improvements in large levels

How You Can Help
I'm adding a new section to help guide all the incredibly passionate people I've met who just want to help. Sometimes this will be a useful section, other times it wont. BUT. Right now, I could REALLY use help identifying other REALLY obnoxious bugs in the game, I'm not talking about the occasional clipping through walls and stuff, more the things that happen that really ruin the game while playing it. Here's some information on how to best describe a bug (to better help me fix it!). Or even just providing images and succinct descriptions is VERY helpful, similar to what Hedgie did here.

Or list some details in the #issues-and-bugs channel of the Discord Server. I'm a little behind on logging them just a heads up :D

HA! Good question! I realized that I've told everyone on the Discord server, but not here ːsteamfacepalmː about 6 months ago I took the plunge and made a huge engine upgrade for Warcube and sadly, while it made a lot of things better, it also broke a TON of stuff :( so I've been spending a lot of time fixing things as well as catching up on some life (we moved again, back to Seattle, USA) ːsteamhappyː

I'm still working hard on Warcube, just been going through a TON of bug fixing. I recently upgraded to a new version in the game engine I'm using (Unity) to use a bunch of cool features to speed up development, unfortunately it broke quite a bit, but hey! Totally going to be worth it! :D

I'm super pumped to introduce the BATTLE EDITOR! I've been having a blast building it, and better yet, playing it :D It's been a very busy past month, inbetween building this editor I've ALSO been planning out our next move :) our year of living rural has come to an end, and we're now scoping out where to move to next. Just wanted to say thank you again for all your support, Warcube is going strong thanks to YOU! :)

BATTLE EDITOR
Okay so really everything under here deals with the battle editor, so just enjoy the GIFS :P


Scroll to increase unit block size
Still placing units by hand? BOOORING. Place a row or two!


Change Biomes
Use the menu at the far right to change biomes, currently theres:
  • Highlands
  • Snowdrift
  • Desert
  • Island


Water you waiting for?
Just add water in the scene options, raise and lower the height to find interesting playing fields :D


Snap what you got
Use the snapping editor (top left) to place things at nice intervals.


Then Lock it
You can also lock certain groups of objects so they don't get deleted. Just click the matching icon for them on the top left. For instance,if you place walls, and only want to delete your 100 archers ON them, but the not walls... just lock your environment.


Unit Orders
Clicking on units will cycle through their orders: Attack, Guard, Hold Position.


Slow/Fast Motion
Slow down or speed up the battle, and get rad views like this :P spawning in as the player is totally optional!

New Beta Locations!
There's 3 new beta locations, all at varying degrees of done-ness :) if you can't tell already, my goal is loosely block in locations for a whole area of the map. One thing that I've found difficult with the Old Kingdom area, is how every few locations I'd create some new feature for the game, and suddenly certain locations are obsolete, or need a redesign :/ I'm hoping that by iteratively completing zones of the map, this will make that less jarring AND allow for better early feedback :D

Well what to say :) it's officially been a year since I moved to where we are now (literally the middle of nowhere). It's been a year of ups and downs, living rural has been a lot of fun when its warm out, but when its cold and you've got a kid thats learning to walk... not so much :P this update is a little late because I've also been prepping my portfolio for another move somewhere, though we're not quite sure where yet ><

Siege Ladders
Now you can build siege ladders! They're not the most expensive (or sturdy). But if you mass 'em, then you can probably get some units up on the walls :D

Also introducing siege bridges! Perfect for moats or detached towers :)



DEBUG
  • MAP - fixed flycam to now aim with MMB, little wonky still ;)


  • MAP, army units clip through map.
  • CAM, clipping with tall structures + buildings.
  • Arena Mode under construction again

Well, its been a bittersweet past couple weeks for me. Realizing that it's been a year since we moved here has been strange. I guess I just realize how MUCH can get done in a year, as well as how little sometimes? But I know thats life :) and there's been some weeks where I feel SO busy and gotten a ton done, and other weeks where I've ALSO been very busy... but feel restless by the end of it feeling like I haven't accomplished anything. Thanks for sticking with me, and helping improve this little game :) it's been a blast :D
