Australia is still burning, but over the last couple of days they’ve actually had some rain! While this is a big help to certain areas, there are still 83 fires blazing around the country, and there’s a lot of people and wildlife still in trouble. It’s good job then that there are even more game devs, companies, and communities banding together to help out our friends down under.

A new Humble Bundle, a donation from the makers of Warframe, and a charity initiative run by Eve Online players are just three more ways the games industry is raising money, and you can get involved to show your support too.

Void Bastards was a right laugh, yeah? I had a proper good time blasting my way around the daftest comic 2000AD never made earlier this year, but it did get a little stale after a bit. There’s only so many times a chavvy wee sod can tell you to shove a blaster up your arse before it starts to grate, y’know. Even if it’s a lark for a few evenings, Graham felt it needed a bit more direction in his review. Today’s Bang Tidy update might not reinvent that wheel, but it does shove a few more cats into the mix to keep things interesting.

Rural life is disgusting. All those shrubs and trees, how awful. You should pack your checkered pouch and head into the big smoke. The shining cities of videogameland are calling to you, and the team of the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show, will be there to help you get settled in to your disgusting, overpriced flat no matter which giant urban maze you choose. Trust us, life is so much better in the city.

Ignore the rats. You’ll get used to them.

According to some, who shall go unnamed, rogue-y FPS Void Bastards is too easy a game even if you crank its difficulty slider all the way up to the amusingly named ‘Hard Bastard’ mode. Developers Blue Manchu are obviously listening to them, because they’ve just added a new super-high-end challenge mode to the game. Unlocked by completing the game on Hard Bastard mode with the Ironman modifier, Foon mode asks you to do it all again, this time armed with nothing but a piece of cheap plastic space-cutlery. See how it works in a cheeky trailer below.

If Gone Home is the answer to the question, “What if BioShock without guns?”, then Void Bastards is the answer to the question, “What if BioShock without story?” On a series of post-disaster spaceships, each rendered in a slick comic book style, you fight or avoid grumpy mutants, circumvent security systems, hack turrets, and rummage through bins like yer da after that time he accidentally threw away all his Euros on a Spanish holiday. Your motivating force on this hazardous journey isn’t to hear more dialogue from Andrew Ryan or SHODAN, but to serve systems borrowed from the likes of FTL, Rogue Legacy, and other modern roguelites. It works: I am motivated.

Void Bastards, the strategic roguelike-ish shooter from Blue Manchu now has a release date, broadcast to us through the uncaring depths of the internet: May 29th. Inspired by System Shock 2 and Bioshock (and from the design director on both), it’s a darkly humoured stealthy FPS designed to force hard strategic decisions as you make your way across an FTL-esque star-map full of hazards. Resources of all kinds are limited, and every shot fired on a mission is one that you might need later. All of this wrapped up in a nifty comic-book aesthetic. See the announcement trailer below.

EGX Rezzed will be opening its 2019-flavoured doors later this week, and one of the first things you’ll be able to do at there is come and hear us chat to developer Blue Manchu about their upcoming strategy shooter, Void Bastards. Taking place at 1pm on Thursday April 4 (tomorrow) over on the main Developer Sessions stage, art director Ben Lee and narrative director (and former RPS parish member) Cara Ellison will be sitting down with our own Katharine Castle to chat all things about the void and the bastards you’ll meet therein – including the so-called “distracting robo-kitties”.

I m really excited about Void Bastards. I mean, it s a new deeply systems-driven FPS made by some of the people behind System Shock 2, Neptune s Pride and Captain Forever. Of course I m excited.> You play as a desperate crim boarding extremely hostile derelict spaceships to loot stuff. It s got cool guns and a striking comic book art style, and it s the result of some extremely qualified unfinished business. I reckon that s the best reason to get into making something special.

Developers Blue Manchu are turning their sights towards the first person shooter genre with the new announcement of Void Bastards. It s quite a difference from their previous work, the collectable card/board game Card Hunter, but they say not to expect your typical FPS either. Take a look at the trailer to see for yourself:
