Apex Legends developer Respawn has backtracked on a definitive-sounding statement regarding the future of fan-favourite series Titanfall.

Earlier this week, Respawn's Jason Garza gave a refreshingly frank answer when asked by a fan about what was going on with Titanfall these days. In short: nothing much at the moment, as the studio was so busy.

But as coverage of his comments gathered steam, Respawn this morning issued a new statement via Twitter aimed at press coverage of the matter, deliberately muddying the waters.

Respawn has moved to reassure concerned Titanfall 2 players after reports of a security vulnerability caused some to uninstall the game.

Respawn tweeted to say it was investigating the reports, which emerged yesterday and caused something of a panic within the Titanfall community.

Respawn then followed that tweet up to say its engineers believe they're dealing with "a simple exploit that can be used to crash games".

A sweeping community investigation has claimed the recent Apex Legends "SaveTitanfall" hack was part of an elaborate scheme to revive a cancelled Titanfall spin-off.

On 4th July, Apex Legends on PC was hacked to display the URL "savetitanfall.com", with the subheader, "[Titanfall 1] is being attacked so is Apex."

Players also received an "important message" at the end of each match that requested they "visit and repost savetitanfall.com".

The Titanfall games seem to be experiencing problems with DDoS attacks - again - and Respawn has announced it's investigating the latest wave.

Over the past few days players have taken to social media to report more DDoS attacks on both Titanfall and Titanfall 2, resulting in both regular players and content creators being booted from servers (or unable to connect at all). This time the attacks seem particularly severe, as Titanfall 2 streamers have said they are being "blacklisted" by the hacker so that their games are automatically hit when they join, making their main accounts unusable.

As explained in a video by Titanfall 2 streamer Astraeus, there's a suggestion this isn't a regular DDoS attack where a hacker overloads a server with requests, but that the perpetrator has found a way to manipulate the game's code and disconnect players using this method. Nobody seems sure how the hacker is doing it, but the end result is that legitimate players are being disconnected from servers.

With Titanfall 2 enjoying an Apex Legends-powered resurgence, so is its superb Gauntlet.

Respawn's wall-hopping assault course tasks players with completing one lap as quickly as possible - and nearly five years after Titanfall 2 came out, speedrunners are breaking world records again.

In October 2019, speedrunner Cash Mayo set an incredible time of 11.7 seconds, shaving a fraction off Mayo's previous world record of 11.9 seconds:

If you're the kind of person that lists big stompy robots, feisty FPS action, and parkour as three of their favourite things, then you've almost certainly already played Respawn Entertainment's Apex Legends pre-cursor, Titanfall 2. But if you somehow haven't, then you can do that very thing for free this weekend on Steam.

Titanfall 2 released back in 2016 to much acclaim (its commercial reception was less favourable, perhaps due to publisher EA famously dubious decision to wedge its release between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare), with ample praise piled on the first-person shooter's sterling blend of the aforementioned robots, guns, and zippy traversal.

It's biggest surprise, however, came in the form of a brisk but immensely entertaining single-player campaign. "Like the best Mario games," enthused Eurogamer's Essential review, "Titanfall 2 picks a trick, themes an entire level around it, and then drops it the second it threatens to become overfamiliar. And just like Mario, it's all backed up by those rock-solid fundamentals that mean when you are just in firefights, or are asked to navigate a chasm using wall-running, everything feels nigh-on flawless."

Respawn has finally declared it is prepared to tackle long-running problems with Titanfall on PC.

In a tweet, the developer said "help is coming ASAP" in response to ongoing DDOS attacks that affect those trying to play the first-person shooter online.

Titanfall has had multiplayer issues on PC for years now, and they are blamed on a somewhat mythical figure known in the community as "Jeanue".

EA recently released a raft of games on Steam for the first time, and perhaps the game that is benefiting the most is Titanfall 2.

Respawn's wonderful first-person shooter was critically-acclaimed upon its October 2016 release, but it suffered in the sales department, getting squeezed out by EA's own Battlefield 1, which launched just before, and Activision's rival FPS Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which launched just after.

It was a crying shame, as Titanfall 2 is a fantastic game. "In a banner year for first-person shooters, Respawn delivers what might well be the best," Jon Denton wrote in Eurogamer's Titanfall 2 review, which awarded the shooter an essential badge.
