Talisman: Digital Classic Edition - Tom Longshaw-Young
Hi Talisman fans! ːBlueTalismanːːTalProToadː

Just a small update to let you all know that we've changed the title of Talisman: Digital Edition to be Talisman: Digital Classic Edition here on Steam!

This is because we've just launched Talisman: Digital 5th Edition on Steam, and wanted to make sure the two versions were distinct from each other in your library!

Even with a name change, don't worry - your copy of Talisman: Digital Classic Edition is staying the same game you've grown to love over the last 10 years, and we're still going to support the game with patches and bug fixes in the future. Part of moving the Talisman: Digital Classic Edition base game to free-to-play was specifically so that going forward, we can now support both versions of Talisman that we're offering here on Steam - no matter which version you want to play! ːheartː

We appreciate all the love and support you've all given us as the team behind Talisman: Digital Edition, and that you've trusted us so much with your favourite board game. We hope we continue doing you all proud!

Oh, and if you haven't already, you can check out Talisman: Digital 5th Edition now on Steam:

Talisman: Digital Classic Edition - Tom Longshaw-Young
Hi Talisman fans! ːBlueTalismanː

In case you missed it, we recently proudly announced that we’re going to be bringing expansions from Talisman: Digital Edition over to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition once it launches, starting with The Reaper Expansion. Not only that, but if you already own The Reaper Expansion, you’ll be able to access the remastered version entirely for free!

If you want to know when you’ll be able to play Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, the best way to do that is by adding it to your Steam wishlist!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/908060/Talisman_Digital_5th_Edition/

We shared some details about the process of bringing The Reaper Expansion to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition in that original announcement, but we figured you’d want to know more - so we’ve put together another developer blog, this time focusing on that process!

Deciding What to Adapt First
When it came to deciding which expansion from 4th Edition we wanted to bring over to 5th Edition first, we wanted to make sure we made the best choice possible for us as developers, and for you, our players. With 16 expansions to choose from, we had a lot of different elements to consider!

Thanks to 10 years of people playing Talisman: Digital Edition, we’ve got a ton of information about how players tend to play Talisman, the expansions they most often turn on/off during a game and much more beyond that. We also knew that certain expansions would take longer to implement in 5th Edition than others, so the complexity of the mechanics in the expansion was something we considered too - for example, implementing The Clockwork Kingdom and its crafting system into Talisman: Digital 5th Edition would be a much bigger undertaking than adding The Sacred Pool.

After looking at all our options, we settled on starting with The Reaper for a multitude of reasons. First of all, it’s a relatively simple expansion, from a mechanics point of view. It doesn’t add anything overly unique to the game aside from The Reaper himself, instead building upon the kind of mechanics already present in the base game. Instead of adding new mechanics, it instead adds balance to the adventure deck enhancing the base Talisman experience.

Secondly, we found that it is one of the most commonly enabled expansions among Talisman: Digital Edition players, even when players only enable a handful of expansions. Not only that, but across the different demographics we sort our players into (solo, online players, regular playgroups etc.), The Reaper saw consistently high usage across all of them.

Also, The Reaper was the first ever expansion we released for Talisman: Digital Edition all the way back in 2014, so it felt a bit poetic coming back to it as our first remastered expansion for Talisman: Digital 5th Edition!

Reaper Card Art Update
Anyone who’s taken a glance at the 5th Edition of Talisman will be able to tell you that the first thing that strikes you is the gorgeous artwork featured on all the cards. From the characters and items, to the enemies and strangers you encounter while playing, the entire game has a completely new look compared to the 4th Edition.

So, once we knew we were remastering 4th Edition expansions into Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, we knew we’d also want to update all the artwork to make it ‘fit’ with the new style of 5th Edition. However, we wanted to make sure that anyone who played the original 4th Edition version of the expansion would be able to tell at a glance what the card was.

So, in order to do this, we took each original piece of artwork in the original Reaper Expansion as a starting point, our art team would get to work on painting over it in a style that matches the artwork that you’d find in 5th Edition. This way, we made sure the creation of this new, painted card art would always be true to the original 4th Edition artwork, while still feeling like it was made for 5th Edition from the beginning!

Reaper Warlock Quests
One of the additions to Talisman that The Reaper Expansion brings is ‘Warlock Quest Cards’ - instead of rolling a die to take one of 6 quests, you get to choose from 12 available quests at the Warlock Cave. However, the original 4th Edition versions of these cards only featured rules and flavour text, without any artwork.

Seeing as we were remastering the expansion, we figured it would be a great chance to update these cards with artwork! That way, it’s easier to get across to players the ‘action’ they’re performing by completing whatever quest they’re carrying out. Check out some of the new Warlock Quest Cards below:

Deck Editor Considerations
Another Talisman: Digital 5th Edition announcement we made recently was that we’d be including a Deck Editor - you can check out all the details here if you missed it!

As this is the first expansion we’ve added to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, it meant this was the first time we had to figure out how expansions would work with the Deck Editor. You see, when playing with The Reaper Expansion physically, the rules instructed you to “Shuffle the new character, Adventure, and Spell Cards into their respective decks.” With this new digital Deck Editor however, we needed to figure out the best way to enable players to customise their game without breaking anything!

So, we were presented with two options:
  • Allow you to individually add The Reaper Expansion cards into the base game decks when editing your decks.
  • Allow you to create custom decks just for The Reaper Expansion, which you could then choose between when you enabled the expansion.
Now, while it might seem that both of these options are practically identical, there is actually a major difference when it comes to our plans for the future of Talisman: Digital 5th Edition. You see, there are a whole group of cards from different expansions that really don’t work if you don’t have the mechanics from that expansion enabled during the game. For example, the Queen Mab from The Woodland Expansion instructs you gain one Destiny when you encounter her. If we made it so that you could put Queen Mab into your Adventure Deck without The Woodland Expansion, she wouldn’t be able to perform that action.

Another thing we needed to consider was the sheer amount of cards that are going to be added to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition in the future. Part of the reason we talk a lot about legacy code issues in Talisman: Digital Edition making development difficult is due to us adding thousands of cards to the game over the last 10+ years. Rather than showing you each and every card at once and asking you to choose what you’d want to play with, having it so that you only need to worry about cards from The Reaper Expansion when setting up your Reaper custom deck makes it much easier to manage.

Making a New Reaper Model
Another highlight of The Reaper Expansion is the Reaper himself! Moving around the board and causing severely bad times for anyone he lands on, many would argue that he’s the defining feature of the Expansion. It is named after him, after all!

One of the changes between Talisman: Digital Edition and Talisman: Digital 5th Edition is that we now fully 3D model all of the characters that are placed on the board - and that goes for The Reaper too! The good news is that The Reaper already has a real-life model, as he’s a miniature in the original 4th Edition expansion, so we had a very strong starting point for making our Digital 5th Edition version.

We’re still polishing him up so he’s not quite ready to see just yet, but keep an eye out as we get closer to release!

And that’s the end of our latest Talisman: Digital 5th Edition developer blog! We hope you’ve enjoyed this look at how we’re updating classic expansions for 5th Edition, and can’t wait to show you more of the game as development progresses.

We’ll be sharing more information about release dates for both Talisman: Digital 5th Edition and The Reaper Expansion for Talisman: Digital 5th Edition in the near future, so make sure to wishlist the game now to get notified of the latest news!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/908060/Talisman_Digital_5th_Edition/

The love and support we’ve been shown over the last 10 years while developing Talisman: Digital Edition has always overwhelmed us here at Nomad Games, and when creating Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, we knew we wanted a way to show our loyal Talisman fanbase that we massively appreciate that love and support. We also fully appreciate the financial commitment you’ve already made towards Talisman: Digital Edition, and want to show our appreciation.

This updated and remastered version of The Reaper Expansion will feature all-new artwork, special avatars and titles for your Nomad Account and more (which we’ll reveal later on once development has progressed). To give you a sneak preview of what you can expect though, we’ve grabbed some of the brand-new artwork to show you the new look that you can expect to see in The Reaper Expansion in Talisman: Digital 5th Edition!

Can you recognise some of the iconic Reaper cards below?

So if you’ve not picked up The Reaper Expansion yet in Talisman: Digital Edition (or any other expansions!), now you’ve got even more reason to add it to your Steam library. Right now we’ve actually got our biggest publisher sale ever happening over on Steam, so go check it out!

We’ve spent a long time figuring out the logistics of exactly how we’ll give you access to your Talisman: Digital Edition content within Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, so we’ve put together a comprehensive FAQ that should hopefully answer any questions you might have! You can find it below.

And if anything hasn’t been covered, you can reach out to us on all the different places we are online! Or leave a comment here on Steam - Tom will be lurking there, as always. ːeyeːːeyeː

Talisman: Digital 5th Edition - DLC Carryover FAQ

How will you know I own the expansions in Talisman: Digital Edition?

Through your Nomad Account! Your Nomad Account (which is entirely free to sign-up for and use) keeps track of the expansions and extra content you own, so by signing into the same account on both versions of Talisman, we’ll be able to detect what you already own.

Does this mean prices are going up?

It does not! We’re not going to be increasing the prices of the existing content in Talisman: Digital Edition on any platforms, anywhere. In fact, alongside this announcement we're running a publisher sale here on Steam, with some of our deepest Steam discounts on Talisman expansions ever. Check it out!

Will this only apply if you buy the expansion before it gets added to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition?

Nope! If you buy The Reaper Expansion in Talisman: Digital Edition after it’s been added to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, you’ll just need to sign into the same Nomad Account on both Talisman: Digital Edition and Talisman: Digital 5th Edition. We’re not restricting access to expansions based on when they were purchased.

Will this work across all my devices?

Right now we’re still focusing on the Steam version of Talisman: Digital 5th Edition only, so we can’t say for certain which platforms will allow you to bring across your existing expansions and other content.

We’re still a long way away from even being able to confirm any console versions of Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, so we won’t be able to talk much more about this topic until much further down the line. If/when we confirm console ports for Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, we’ll be sure to address this then - but until then, we haven’t had a chance to properly investigate it.

Will I still be able to get this Talisman: Digital Edition content in Talisman: Digital 5th Edition if I don’t own Talisman: Digital Edition?

One of the reasons we made the base game for Talisman: Digital Edition free on Steam earlier this year was because we wanted to make sure that if someone wanted to play Talisman: Digital Edition content in Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, that the process of doing so was as easy as possible.

So if you do want The Reaper Expansion, you’ll only need to download and boot up Talisman: Digital Edition once to sign into your Nomad Account - in the same way that you can currently sign into your Nomad Account on mobile and PC to sync your purchases!

Will we still be able to share expansions for free in online multiplayer?

Absolutely!

For those who don’t know, when you’re playing online in Talisman: Digital Edition, only one person in the lobby needs to own an expansion for everyone else to be able to use it. We’re happy to confirm that this feature will continue into Talisman: Digital 5th Edition - so only one person in the lobby will need to own The Reaper Expansion to be able to play with it online.

When will 4th Edition expansions be added to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition?

A very good question! Right now we’re still in the process of developing The Reaper Expansion for Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, but once we get closer to release we’ll have a much better idea of how long the porting process generally takes.

Once we’ve published The Reaper Expansion, we’ll be taking a look at what content we want to bring forward next. Depending on how long it takes us to port over The Reaper and the next expansion we want to bring across, will depend on when the next expansion will be added.

How often will you be adding 4th Edition expansions to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition?

Again, this depends on how long porting an expansion takes! So we can’t give a definitive answer on this right now, but once The Reaper is available in Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, we’ll share more plans about our next steps for bringing across expansions.

Will you still be able to try a Talisman: Digital Edition expansion each week for free?

You will!

For those who don’t already know, we currently have a weekly rotation of free-to-try expansions in Talisman: Digital Edition, allowing you to try out all of the various expansions we’ve got available in the game. Even when we bring these expansions to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, we’re not changing that!

We’re still figuring out how we’ll handle these weekly rotating expansions in Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, so we’ll share more about that in the future.

What are you going to do with cards/rules that don’t work in the 5th Edition rules?

For this, we’re going to be classifying cards into three distinct categories:
  • Cards that work within the 5th Edition rules with no changes needed.
  • Cards that still technically function within the 5th Edition rules, but no longer function as they should.
  • Cards that no longer function/don’t have a purpose at all within the 5th Edition rules.
For cards that fall within the 1st category, we won’t need to do anything. Huzzah! For cards in the 2nd category, we’re going to be looking at each card on an individual basis and adjusting its effects to make sure it follows the rules of 5th Edition, without changing how it works from a gameplay perspective.

The third category of cards is the trickiest for us from a design perspective, but it’s not an impossible task! If a certain card doesn’t work at all due to changes in rules between 4th and 5th Edition, we’ll look at what the card is trying to do, and the action/item/character the card is representing. We’ll then make a new version of that card that matches what the 4th Edition card was trying to originally do.

What about the DLC characters?

We’re planning on bringing across the Talisman: Digital Edition DLC characters over to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition too! Right now our priority is porting expansions however, as we know that they’ll bring a lot more to the gameplay experience.

So stay tuned for more information on how we’ll be bringing across DLC characters! Oh, and they will also be free for anyone who owns them in Talisman: Digital Edition already, of course.

What about the Legendary Decks?

For anyone who doesn’t know, the Legendary Decks in Talisman: Digital Edition were a series of special decks that you could purchase for certain expansions that offered a higher amount of challenge for experienced players.

Given that Legendary Decks were specifically designed for more hardcore players as an extra challenge based on requests from our community, adding them to Talisman: Digital 5th Edition isn’t high on our priority list at the moment. We’d rather focus on bringing across content that we know more players will appreciate and enjoy before we focus on something more niche like the Legendary Decks.

Not to say that it’ll never happen, but we’ve got a lot more stuff we want to get through first!

Does this mean content is being removed from Talisman: Digital Edition?

Nope. Not at all.

You’ll still be able to play The Reaper Expansion in Talisman: Digital Edition as you have previously. Once we bring The Reaper Expansion into Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, you’ll just have the choice between which version of Talisman you want to play it in!

And that’s the end of the FAQ! Like we said before, if anything hasn’t been covered, you can reach out to us on all the different places we are online!

And if you’d like to make sure you keep up with all things Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, wishlist the game now!

Talisman: Digital Classic Edition - Tom Longshaw-Young
Hey Talisman fans!

Today, we’re proud to officially announce that we’re developing a brand new version of Talisman: Digital Edition, based on the upcoming 5th Edition of the physical board game from Avalon Hill. We’re planning on releasing Talisman: Digital 5th Edition onto Steam later this year, with other platforms to follow. So wishlist it now to stay in the loop!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/908060/Talisman_Digital_5th_Edition/

Check out the official announcement video below (featuring Tom awkwardly talking to the camera!):

When the 5th Edition of Talisman was originally announced back in February of 2024, we were (understandably) swamped by all of you lovely folk asking if we’d be making a new version of Talisman: Digital Edition to match, and we’re very happy to finally confirm that we are. Keeping it a secret while you were all asking us wasn’t easy!

This isn’t going to be a simple case of swapping out artwork and updating some rules though, as we’re going to be bringing a wide range of overhauls and new features to the game, alongside adapting all the changes and updates brought with the physical 5th Edition. Check out some of the early screenshots below to get an idea of what we’ve been working on so far:

You’ll have probably also noticed that last week we announced that the current version of Talisman: Digital Edition was going to be making the transition to free-to-play. You can find out more about that here.

In order to differentiate between the two versions of Talisman that are going to be available once Talisman: Digital 5th Edition launches (that’s right, the current one isn’t going away!), we’re going to be renaming Talisman: Digital Edition to Talisman: Digital Classic Edition. Don't worry though - we’re also going to keep supporting the current version of Talisman: Digital Edition with patches and updates once it becomes Talisman: Digital Classic Edition, and one of the reasons we've made the move to free-to-play is because we'll then be in a better position to roll out updates/support for it.

We can’t wait to share more about Talisman: Digital 5th Edition, so make sure you follow us (and wishlist the game!) for the latest Talisman news. If you’ve got any questions, feel free to reach out via any of our social media channels or directly here in the Steam comments - I'll get to answering you as soon as I can, but it's all a bit mad here right now, so apologies if it takes me a while!

Oh, and if you want to find out more about the physical release of Talisman 5th Edition, you can check it out here!
Talisman: Digital Classic Edition - Tom Young
Hey Talisman fans! ːBlueTalismanː ːheartː

Today we’re excited to announce that we’re going to be making Talisman: Digital Edition free to download and keep on Steam as of May 23rd!

Over the 10+ years since we originally launched Talisman: Digital Edition here on Steam, the game has gone on to become a favourite for millions of players across the globe. We’re hoping that making the base game of Talisman: Digital Edition free-to-play will introduce the game to a whole new wave of future Talisman fans.

We’re rolling out this announcement to make sure we you all an advanced warning that this change is going to happen. If you’ve already bought the game on Steam within the last week, you can automatically refund it via Steam Support, for example!

We also figured that a lot of you would have questions about this change, so we’ve put together a comprehensive FAQ that should hopefully answer any questions you might have! If anything hasn’t been covered, I'll be in the comments here on Steam replying, and you can reach out to us on all the different places we are online!

Talisman: Digital Edition - Free to Play FAQ

Why are you doing this?

Talisman: Digital Edition has been out for more than 10 years at this point, and over the years we’ve occasionally offered the game for free - either through giveaways or temporary free-to-keep periods on mobile. We’ve also had a close look at how players tend to play Talisman: Digital Edition, and we think that lowering the barrier to entry for the base game will bring in a whole new wave of players, and leave us in a better position to support Talisman going forward.

What changes can I expect to see once Talisman: Digital Edition is free-to-play?

Very little! We might make a bit more use out of the news section on the main menu to direct you towards cool stuff we’re working on here at Nomad Games, but other than that the Talisman: Digital Edition experience is going to stay the same as it was (toads and all)! ːTalProToadː

What features/content will be available for free, and what will I need to buy?

You’ll be able to play with the Talisman: Digital Edition base game, and we’re not going to put anything behind a paywall that was previously already in the base game. So you’ll still be able to play online, single-player against AI and access your Nomad Account. You'll also still be able to play with your friends, so if you've got buddies who've never experienced the joys of Talisman - now they've got no excuse!

Will there be any in-game advantages for players who previously purchased Talisman?

Absolutely not. As random as Talisman can be, it’s important that everyone is treated fairly and have exactly the same odds of success or failure. This applies to dice rolls, card draws and everything else in the game. No player will ever be given an advantage over another in Talisman: Digital Edition, no matter if they’ve previously purchased the game or are a free-to-play player, or for any other reason.

I am a player who paid for the game before it goes free. Do I get my money back/do I get anything for paying for it?

Talisman: Digital Edition has been out for over 10 years now, has been given away for free multiple times and also been in multiple game bundles, leading to the price for the base game (especially if you want to grab a Steam key) being very, very low. We’re still going to look into giving out something special for people who previously bought the game as thanks for supporting us, but we’re still figuring out exactly what that might/would look like.

While we’re aware that it can be frustrating to have something you paid for be made available for free later, we’re hoping that between your purchase of Talisman: Digital Edition and May 23rd, you feel like the game provided you enough entertainment to justify your purchase.

Will there be ads or other interruptions in the free-to-play version?

Nope! We’re not going to make you wait, sit through ads or anything else annoying when you play Talisman: Digital Edition.

Will there be any restrictions or limitations for free players compared to paid players?

There will not be! If you’ve just picked up Talisman: Digital Edition for free and your friend has had Talisman: Digital Edition sitting in their Steam library since 2014, you’ll both have access to exactly the same game. The only difference will be your own access to expansions, characters and legendary decks based on what extra content you’ve purchased.

Does this mean you’re going to add microtransactions to the game?

We’re not planning on adding any microtransactions to Talisman: Digital Edition. You’ll still be able to purchase the same expansions, characters and Legendary Decks as you’ve been doing since the game launched - we’re not adding anything extra or hiding anything new behind a paywall.

Will there be any incentives for players to spend money in the game?

Aside from what we’ve already had in the game for ages? Nope! You can still pick up expansions, characters, runestones and Legendary Decks if you want, but we’re not adding any extra incentives or anything that gives you an advantage over other players for money.

Will there be any changes to multiplayer or matchmaking?

We’re anticipating that the move to free-to-play will increase the number of average active players in online multiplayer, so we’re going to be keeping an eye on our online servers to ensure they can handle the increased load. Other than that, we’re not making any changes to how multiplayer and online games function in Talisman: Digital Edition.

Will the game still be available on the same platforms?

We’re not going to be removing Talisman: Digital Edition from any storefronts, so anywhere you could get Talisman previously, you’ll still be able to get it.

We are planning on stopping support for the Mac version of Talisman: Digital Edition at some point soon in the future, but this isn’t actually anything to do with Talisman going free-to-play. This is due to the extremely low player counts for the Mac version (less than 1.5%!) and changes that Apple have made when it comes to making games work on Mac.

We’re not going to be taking away access to the Mac version of Talisman: Digital Edition though - we’re just not going to be rolling out any future updates for it.

Are you going to be releasing more expansions for Talisman: Digital Edition then?

We’re not planning on releasing any more expansions for Talisman: Digital Edition at this time. We know there is a big demand for new Talisman content though, don’t worry! We’re working behind the scenes to see what exciting things we can bring to you all. So stay tuned. ːeyeː

Is the game still going to get patches?

Yes it will! Our plan is to continue releasing patches for Talisman: Digital Edition that fix bugs, improve stability and overall make the game a better experience for you all.

Will this change how expansion sharing works?

It will not! For anyone who doesn’t know, in Talisman: Digital Edition only one player in an online lobby needs to own an expansion for it to be usable in that game by everyone. So if you own all the expansions and just want to play them online with your friends who own nothing Talisman, they can now just download the base game for free and play along with you!

I have an unredeemed Steam key for Talisman: Digital Edition, what would happen when I redeem it?

Not much! Steam does keep track of your key redemptions, and redeeming a key will mean you’ll be marked as an owner of Talisman: Digital Edition - Retail Key. This will mean you have access to Talisman: Digital Edition, but so does everyone else once the game goes free - so the end result is the same.

Won’t this mean that there will be more griefers and cheaters?

We’re going to be keeping an extra close eye on how people play Talisman: Digital Edition online once we make the transition to free-to-play. The good news is that we’ve already had 10+ years of people trying to be rude to each other via Talisman. We’ve managed to get a pretty good handle on how to stop people from being mean to each other, so they’ll have to find somewhere else to shout at random strangers on the internet. (We’ve heard X is pretty good for that…)

And that’s the end of the FAQ! Like we said before, if anything hasn’t been covered, you can reach out to us on all the different places we are online!
