A villainous fight in a Street Fighter V screenshot.

The makers of Street Fighter and Resident Evil have reported that a ne’er-do-well got access to their computer systems this week. That’s bad. Luckily for us, they say they’ve found no hint that the unknown baddie got into customer data. That’s good. Though I’ll be changing the password of any Capcom account I have, just in case. And this happening so soon after hackers reportedly leaked Watch Dogs: Legion’s source code does make me wonder if a dramatic twist will follow.

Yoshinori Ono, the executive producer of the Street Fighter series, has announced he’s leaving Capcom after almost thirty years with the company. He plans to split this summer, and doesn’t say what he’s up to next. Ono has become the of public face of pavement punch-ups, hosting video presentations, visiting tournaments, and generally being popular amongst byway brawlers. He’s going out in classic Ono style: with a cry of “SHORYUKEN!”

Fighting game championship Evo has been cancelled this year following abuse allegations against Evo co-founder and CEO Joey “MrWizard” Cuellar. Evo are ejecting him from the company and replacing him as CEO. The makers of half the games in Evo’s lineup had already pulled out of the event following the allegations, including Street Fighter gang Capcom and Mortal Kombat devs NetherRealm. Evo Online was due to run this weekend, one of the many virtual replacements for events called off due to the pandemic.

Like everything else, Evo is not going ahead as usual this year. The fighting game championships will not invade a Las Vegas resort for a weekend at the end of July, with that event now cancelled and tickets getting refunded. But Evo 2020 is evolving, and will go online this summer. It surely won’t be the same but, even as a casual spectator, I’m still well up for it.

The human race evolved the facial expression known as the “smile” because we needed a way to silently communicate satisfaction to other members of our species. So we decided to bare our teeth at one another and squint. This stuck, and now even the characters of your favourite digital storyderby are doing it. It’s sort of disgusting, and yet… you know what, I like it. Here are the 11 best smiles in PC games.

It might be only three months since Arcade Edition hit, but Street Fighter V is gearing up for another evolution. Champion Edition was announced this weekend, collecting everything ever released for Capcom’s flagship fighter into one package in the game’s “most robust version” yet. But it wouldn’t be an update without something new. SFV’s next step will be ushered in by an ancient strongman slathered in red-and-blue paint who fights in the buff and occasionally sprouts six angelic wings.

Subtle as ever, Capcom.

Whoops, say Valve. Yes, we did accidentally put a Street Fighter V trailer up early on Steam this week. Yes, it did leak three new characters who ll be joining the roster. Sorry. We ll try not to let it happen again.

It’s no surprise that Capcom’s support for Street Fighter V isn’t over, but I am a bit shocked that its fourth season of new characters has already begun with new fighter Kage. Available now, this angry lad (his name literally translating to “Shadow”) is pretty much a beefed up version of old palette-swap villain Evil Ryu. Now apparently cosplaying as a secondary character from Homestuck, or – more likely – some kind of Oni, Kage is a teleporting, air-dashing, punchier and generally meaner> take on Ryu’s familiar style. Give him a peek in the debut trailer and breakdown vid below.

Capcom have added in-game adverts to Street Fighter V, slapping logos onto characters’ costumes, loading screens, and arenas. These ads are optional, are currently only for in-game content and Capcom’s own Pro Tour digital sports circuit, and do offer players a little in-game cash for having them enabled. They also look daft as all heck, covering characters in ugly and incongruous logos, and are an unwelcome intrusion in a game which still costs money to buy.

During the Evo 2018 finals last night, Capcom had a little announcement to make – a surprise double character launch due for today, wrapping up Street Fighter 5‘s third season pass in one mighty tiger uppercut. Releasing simultaneously, we’re seeing the return of fan-favourite Muay Thai monster Sagat, and the all-new and self-titled ‘President Of The World’ G. They’re accompanied by full character trailers, plus more technical explanation videos showing exactly what they can do in the ring.
