Having long-since dropped the “Spintires” part of its name, mucky motorist Mudrunner is now dropping its price tag. Temporarily, at least. Saber Interactive’s trudging off-roader is this week’s free game over on the Epic Games Store, letting you wrestle your jeep of choice through the hostile wilderness all the way ’til next Thursday, at which point it’ll be replaced by indie platformer Cave Story +.

Winter might be wrapping up, but it’s never too late for an out-of-season blizzard. SnowRunner, arctic follow-up to ponderous mud-crawler Spintires: Mudrunner is bringing the chill back to PC on April 28th. Spintires: MudRunner is a cludgy delight of a thing, somehow turning the nightmare of getting a vehicle snared in sodden dirt into a puzzle game. It did so well that we’re here once again, this time with snow chains wrapped around the tires and a flask of warm tea on the passenger seat. SnowRunner is a bigger, wetter, and colder addition to the surprisingly successful sim series. Take a peek.

Spintires: MudRunner is Euro Truck Simulator for people who want to get caked in mud while they scream at the ground, demanding that it release their hefty vehicle. It s a filthy game of churning up muck, recklessly charging into rivers and trying to get up slippery slopes while laden with lumber. It s brilliant. It s also off to America, which I believe is quite muddy, in the American Wild expansion. It s out today, accompanied by an extremely dirty launch trailer.

Imagine taking a holiday from your job as a trucker ploughing through the mud of Russia, packing your bags and flying over to the Americky, booking a car for a road trip through the sights and sounds of the US of A, only to get stuck in the mud there too. This nightmare will become reality in Spintires: MudRunner on October 23rd, the newly-announced release date for its ‘American Wilds’ expansion. It will get us stuck on new American maps in new American vehicles, and I am still delighted that this world has a successful game with the premise ‘You car’s stuck in physics-simulated mud and it’s real hard to free yourself but quite satisfying.’ Here, see some American mud in a new trailer.

The world’s muckiest puzzle game gets trickier today with the addition of a mode that’ll send drivers scrambling over hills and getting stuck in mud while trying to collect logs placed randomly around the map. The latest Spintires: MudRunner “free DLC”/content update arrives today, adding two new vehicles, that new ‘Scavenge’ mode, and one new map to scavenge on. Probably the main reason to buy Spintires: MudRunner if you already owned the wonderful original is the prospect of ongoing support, of what the game might become under the stewardship of publishers who aren’t publicly feuding with the game’s creator. Today saw the release of a new update expanding the muddy drive ’em up’s Steam Workshop to support maps too, making it easier to download and play other players’ creations. Spintires: MudRunner is a game about driving slowly through mud. It s beautiful and detailed but also gruelling and unforgiving. The first level took me 3 hours and 21 minutes to complete, during which I drove 18.64 km. That means I averaged slightly less than 6 km per hour. It s less Fast and Furious and more Grimy and Gradual.

I d struggle to describe it as ‘fun’ without caveat because much of the game simply isn’t. Most of the time you ll be driving a heavily laden lorry slowly along a muddy track, wheels slipping on the mud, dreading the moment when they bog down and spin helplessly with little hope of escape. It s probably not what most people would choose to do in their free time. There s a constant nagging thought that I could be doing something, anything, more enjoyable and productive. (more…)

It’s an expanded re-release of 2014’s fantastic driving-through-mud simulator Spintires, which comes fancied up a little but most importantly freed from the troubled relationship with previous publishers Oovee. To launch a game on Halloween is to declare that it will make you , that you will want to flee but find yourself , and that you will . Spintires: MudRunner [official site] isn’t your usual spookfest but I suppose it does hit those points, making the newly-announced Halloween release date fitting. MudRunner is an expanded re-release of 2014’s Spintires, a wonderful game about driving huge vehicles through dynamic simulated mud. Why is MudRunner a separate release? Because the game has changed hands, switching publishers from Oovee to Focus Home and signing up development studio Saber Interactive to work with creator Pavel Zagrebelny. (more…)
