According to shameless wizard aficionado Fraser Brown, Spellforce 3 was quite a pleasant little December surprise. Describing the hybrid RTS/RPG as ‘the poster child for being more than the sum of its parts’, it only stands to reason that the game would be improved by adding yet more parts to the mix.

Today, developers Grimlore Games share a little bit of their unspeakable arcane powers with the rest of us, and have released an official modding suite for the game. This should allow players to create maps or whole new game-modes thanks to putting the entire scripting system into the users hands, or you can just use giant rocks to draw dicks on the ground, if that’s your thing.

SpellForce 3 might sound like the name of a magically-inclined superhero team — and it absolutely should be — but it s actually a chimera, a beast created by smashing together an isometric RPG and an RTS. You ve got your jolly old fantasy adventures, pilfering dungeons and beating up hardworking goblins, and then you ve got outposts to build, trees to chop down and troops to train. Considered individually, neither layer is going to set the world on fire, but SpellForce 3 is the poster child for being more than the sum of its parts.

After a few delays, SpellForce 3, Grimlore Games RTS/RPG hybrid, is finally a thing that you can play in its entirety. I ve been traipsing around the fantasy land of Eo myself, though you ll need to wait until Monday for my review. The RPG/RTS hybrid SpellForce 3 is finally going to be hitting GOG and Steam on December 7. It was announced in 2014 and due out last year but ended up delayed. If you d rather not wait to see what has come from this extra year of development, a free preview is happening on GOG and will be available until November 27. [Alec was right! We’d barely heard from SpellForce 3 since its announcement in 2014, but now a new Steam page promises a 2016 release for this prequel.
