Shadow Warrior

Earlier this month, the original, 1997 Shadow Warrior went free on GOG. Now the Humble Store is upping the ante by making the 2013 remake—the "Special Edition," no less, with the soundtrack, art book, and a couple of unique weapons—free until 10 am PT on July 22.

The updated Shadow Warrior is an outstanding example of how to bring an old, outdated (ie., pretty racist) property into the modern era: Pay homage to what was good about it, ditch everything else, keep it amusingly stupid and wantonly violentl, but slip in a better story than anyone expects, too. In case there's any doubt, I was a big fan, and so the whole "get it free" thing definitely rings my bell.

To get your freebie, just head over to humblebundle.com, click where it says "add to cart," and then take it from there. And since you haven't actually spent any money, why not check out the Bandai Namco Anime Sale while you're there? God Eater 2: Rage Burst, Tales of Berseria, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, and more: They're anime games, and they're on sale until July 24.

And now, we rock.

Hear that sound? No, you probably can't – at least not the sound I'm referring to, which is the free game klaxon. It sounds every time I notice a PC game has been offered up for free, and frankly, I hate the damn klaxon.

But what it signals is nice enough. This time it's heralding the free-ness of Shadow Warrior Classic. It's the old 1990s Shadow Warrior, so you'll need to have some patience for the way FPS games used to be, but even if you've no intention to play it at least it's damn free

That offer linked to above is on GOG, which bundles in all applicable add-ons and expansions. But it's also free on Steam, though without the aforementioned bonuses. Go forth and slay – it's a worthwhile curio, especially if you're a fan of the rebooted Shadow Warrior series.

Shadow Warrior

Shadow Warrior 2 is coming on October 13, as we learned earlier today, and it's looking pretty good. As it should: The first Shadow Warrior was a blast too. But the first first Shadow Warrior, released back in 1997, was solid stuff in its own right, and right now you can pick it up for the low, low cost of nothing.

To clarify, this is Shadow Warrior Classic Complete, which is different from Shadow Warrior Classic Redux: The gameplay is the same, but the Redux edition features remastered graphics and GOG Galaxy achievements, while the Classic Complete version is the same as it was 20 years ago.

It probably bears mentioning that certain elements of the game are kind of, well, racially insensitive. There are no outright slurs or anything (at least not that I remember) but it's shot through with an air of Charlie Chan-esque stereotyping, and has none of the sly, self-aware wit that made Flying Wild Hog's remake feel so much smarter than it looked. At best, it's lowbrow, but some people will find it outright offensive.

The Shadow Warrior Classic Complete package includes the game, a digital copy of the manual, and the soundtrack. Get it at GOG.

It's getting harder and harder to think of new ways to incorporate the word "Wang" into the opening paragraph of news stories about Shadow Warrior 2 trailers—in this case, a full 15 minutes of footage. I guess I could ask if you want to stick some Wang in your eyes and ears? No, that'd be weird. Stare fixated at more Wang? Hmm, possibly. Drool insatiably at the prospect of getting your hands on Wang? Yeah, that'll do.

Shadow Warrior 2 is out next year, so that's how long you'll have to wait before your grubby mitts are back on that Wang.

Shadow Warrior

Less than a day after Shadow Warrior 2's teaser announcement, a full trailer has arrived.

I can honestly say that it surprised me. At no point was I asked if I wanted some more Wang, which seemed like the obvious joke to make. I was, however, asked the less sequel-specific question, "Who wants some Wang?" So let's not go praising its restraint just yet.

Shadow Warrior, of course, was not a game known for its restraint. Judging from this CGI depiction of a demon samurai slicing a car in two, the sequel will be similarly over-the-top.

As hinted in the trailer, Shadow Warrior 2 will feature four-player co-op. It also promises "daring missions" across procedurally-generated environments, plus "new weapons, armor, and arcane relics of legend."

You'll be able to see the first Shadow Warrior 2 game footage at E3, on June 15 at 8.30pm BST, through Twitch.tv/twitch.

UPDATE: The full trailer has been released, and four-player co-op announced. Head here for more details.

ORIGINAL: Prepare to carve baddies up with dual swords and even sometimes shoot them, because Shadow Warrior 2 has been confirmed. Publisher Devolver Digital confirmed the news today via Twitter, linking to an official Shadow Warrior 2 website containing absolutely zero information beyond the above teaser trailer. Given that E3 is next week, we'll likely hear more about the game then. But what do you need to know? It'll be a violent, fast-paced FPS with swords and silly jokes.

Shadow Warrior released in 2013 as a reboot of the classic '90s 3D Realms shooter. If you're keen to give it a go, it's currently 90 per cent off over at GOG.
