  • Fixed the rare crash caused by leaving the Prologue’s Chapel.

  • Fixed the Fair NPCs using incorrect dialogue lines while in Denbrie.

The Tectonics update is now live, and represents a massive step forward for world generation tools.

Everything has changed.

New workflow
The new workflow is all about the simulations. The simulations are run by specifying a geological/eroded age with the Megaannum sliders in the Tectonics and Erosion tabs. You can click/drag on the slider to set a specific age or use the buttons to the left and right to watch the history of the planet unfold, pause it at any point, or reset the simulation.

You can always re-run either simulation, but each run will be different as they are not 100% deterministic simulations and small random changes build up and cascade into large differences over these timescales. So even with the same seed, just re-running the simulations can give entirely different geographies.

While the simulations are running you can swap between any of the visualisations or projections, and most of the parameters can be changed to have their effects immediately applied to the simulation going forward. Some parameters are marked << like this >> and these will reset the simulation if altered.

Tectonics simulation
After you've set up your quality and initial conditions, start the tectonics simulation by setting a Megannum age. I find it usually takes a few hundred Ma before it starts to really look good. Play around with the interactions between gravity, erosion, rigidity, and to get creative with continent shapes and mountain ranges.

Erosion simulation
Once you've stopped the tectonics simulation, you can run the erosion simulation, which carves mountains and coastlines with hydraulic, thermal, and tidal erosion. The effects build up slowly but become noticeable around 25Ma and I find the sweet spot to be about 50-60Ma.

Climate modelling
Climate is simplified to the physical processes of insolation, greenhouse, and rainfall, and runs alongside the simulations. However this comes at a performance cost so if you're noticing a framerate hit, switch to the Elevation or Magma/Sedimentation visualisation -- where the climate modelling is paused until the simulation ends or you switch to another visualisation.

PS. The next major update will be a realtime atmospheric climate simulation.

New UI
  • Hovering the mouse over the planet shows a detailed breakdown of the surface
  • Hovering the mouse over a button or parameter shows a tooltip explaining what it does
  • Many parameters now map to physical properties
  • Hints for how to control the camera with the mouse are available in the top left by hovering the mouse over them
Known issues
As far as I could I've attempted to address all bugs and issues, but I'm aware of two which I still haven't gotten to the bottom of.
  • Sometimes the tectonics simulation will randomly just "implode", and all crust will disappear except the newest crust at plate boundaries. This can be fixed by changing the seed or quality but when it happens it is annoying
  • Sometimes when starting the tectonics simulation the app will hang for a bit before it starts

In Game Player Rank UI Changes

The player will now see who has the next score to beat on the leaderboard, their score and also how many points away from reaching that next rank score they are during play. This change should hopefully incentivise players to push on for higher scores (beating their friends and other players) and is available on both the campaign and gauntlet mode. This also works for Player 2 in game.

Bonus Score Refinement

Playing on a higher difficulty setting will now yield higher bonus scores for max leveling your power and remaining lives. This will ensure elite players are rewarded with higher scores on the leaderboard.

New Backgrounds Added

Many new backgrounds have been added to the Gauntlet Mode. Because the mode is procedural and therefore endless, I thought it would be nice to add further backgrounds to this game mode. Over 1GB of textures have now been added to the game as a result but I hope players appreciate my attempt to make the mode feel fresh if they've already completed the regular campaign mode.

Bug Fixes

Have fixed a long standing bug where some bullets would not be fired at the player correctly by some enemies / bosses. As a result level 4 and level 5 may be slightly more difficult but the gameplay is now as intended when I developed those levels.

Closing Comments

I hope you the players appreciate the time and effort that goes into making a video game. I've tried to create a game that's enjoyable, accessible and also competitive and i'm certainly not done tweaking the game. I plan to reward players on higher difficulty modes with access to more bonus points etc so that these elite players emerge higher on the global leaderboards (as they should do).

If you've enjoyed the game a review and recommendation really helps us solo indie developers and I would very much appreciate the support. It's a few clicks and a few kind words, if you can spare them it really does help me to keep motivated.

Hello captains! We have a new playtest build with some big updates on the hook for ya.



New features
  • Save games! Not the most exciting feature but something that has taken a lot of effort to get in. You can now open the pause menu when not in the tutorial or combat to save the game. The game is also saved when entering and leaving a harbour.
  • A new Rift has been spotted out at sea! This one is still in development but we would like your feedback on what we have made so far. We are quite excited to hear what you think.
  • New starting ship: The glass cannon Tarpon
  • Rumours now have their own page in the journal
  • Streamlined creating your captain
  • More things to take with you in the life boat when starting a new run
  • You can now name your ship when starting a new run
  • More narrative content
  • More sound effects
  • More crew traits
  • More Auxiliary Equipment with a wider range of effects
  • Traits and Auxiliary Equipment now impact challenge difficulty
  • Crew responding to one of their crew mates dying or being marooned

Bug fixes
  • Captain no longer leaves because of low mood. Thanks for reporting it @Rasmus and @copakindred!

Known issues
  • Crew for hire gets shuffled if exiting the Inn, even though you have bought them drinks
  • Occasionally monsters fly in the tutorial
  • Log entries do not not get saved

About Love, Hate and the other ones - deathbuffer
The version of SDL2 we shipped with on Windows had DPI scaling bug, causing the wrong resolution to be selected whenever the game was launched. This update brings SDL2 to the latest version 2.30.11 that should fix the issue.
