Resident Evil 7 biohazard Original Soundtrack

Capcom's seminal survival horror series Resident Evil is heading back to the big screen, for the "beginning of a new universe inspired by storylines and characters" from the games.

Resident Evil's latest movie adaptation is currently in pre-production, and is being handled by Constantin Film (who steered Paul W. S. Anderson's exceedingly wonky Resident Evil ship) in collaboration with writer/director Johannes Roberts.

It'll take the form of an origin story, set on "a fateful night in Raccoon City in 1998", and promises "faithful ties" to Capcom's classic survival horror games. Although, let's be honest, you could cast the whole thing with talking animals and still manage to be entirely more faithful than Anderson's various Resident Evil efforts.

Resident Evil 2 - All In-game Rewards Unlocked

The Resident Evil series has now collectively shipped over 100 million copies worldwide.

As computed by our pals at VG24/7, it was back at the end of March that Capcom confirmed that its hugely successful Monster Hunter franchise has shipped 63 million copies, the Street Fighter titles have shifted 44 million units, and the collective sales of its Resident Evil titles had topped 98 million as at 31st March, 2020, falling just short of the 100 million milestone.

Not any more, though. Citing the "continued sales growth" of the Resident Evil 2 remake - which has sold over 6.5 million units alone - and the recent success of Resident Evil 3, which has sold two million copies since its release last month, the series has now collectively surpassed 100 million shipped units.

Over the festive break we'll be running through our top 20 picks of the year's best games, leading up to the reveal of Eurogamer's game of the year on New Year's Eve. You can find all the pieces published to date here - and thanks for joining us throughout the year!

I didn't want a Resident Evil 2 remake.

I've had my fill of remasters/remakes/reimaginings. Maybe it was the fault of those hysterically dreadful Silent Hill "remasters" at the end of the last console-gen, but I'd become very jaded, very quickly, at the rabid appetite for reskinning decade-old games. Usually, I'm nonplussed about them. In Resident Evil 2's case, I was apoplectic.

According to new figures released by Capcom, this year's superb Resident Evil 2 remake has now sold more copies than the PlayStation original's lifetime sales.

Squirrelled away in Capcom Japan's release date announcement for the freshly unveiled Resident Evil 3 remake is word that, as of 4th December 2019, the acclaimed Resident Evil 2 redo has sold "more than 5 million units" on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 since launching in January.

By contrast, the original Resident Evil 2, which initially released in January 1998 on the first PlayStation, has sold 4.96 million units according to Capcom's official figures, placing it at number seven in the publisher's list of best-selling titles.

UPDATE 12/12/19: Here's our first look at Capcom's sneaky Resident Evil 3 Easter egg, due to be added very soon to Resident Evil 2.

This relates, of course, to the Resi 2 Steam achievement which was unhidden yesterday. It unlocks when you find a letter from Resi 3 protagonist Jill Valentine.

Now, the game's Xbox One version has added the achievement as well (thanks, Xbox Achievements) - and with it, a screenshot of the scene it looks like you'll get when you pick up Jill's note. Resi fans will recognise Jill and Robert Kendo having a little chat:

A new Steam trophy was added to the Resident Evil 2 remake last month - and no-one knows how to unlock it.

Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the trophies list for Resident Evil 2 remake, and you'll find the entry for "EN_name" below. There's little to go on about this mysterious new trophy. We know no-one has unlocked it, and the name is placeholder, so we don't know what it relates to, but we do know it was added through a patch in November. It was also added to the Japan-only Cero Z version of the game, so it likely isn't a mistake.

We've asked Capcom for comment.

Capcom will follow its successful Resident Evil 2 remake with a new version of Resident Evil 3, a report today suggests.

This comes from YouTuber SpawnWave, who said it was on track for a 2020 launch.

Eurogamer has heard of the project also. Sources close to its development suggest it has been in development for some time - although the franchise's upcoming multiplayer portion Project Resistance is currently being given the spotlight.

Untitled Goose Game

If you've yet to finish up your PC playthrough of Resident Evil 2 because you've been too distracted by the antics of a certain renegade goose, I have wonderful, if a tad unsettling, news. A PC mod now replaces Resident Evil 2's terrifying Mr. X with an even scarier sight: the goose from Untitled Goose Game.

As Goose has swiftly become one of gaming's most devilishly delinquent characters, it seems a natural progression to bring the bird to Raccoon City, particularly as the modder behind this particular mash-up also brought us the nightmare fuel that was the Thomas the Tank Engine mod, too.

While yet to be formally released, you can see the mod in action on modder ZombieAli's Twitter account. I'm delighted to confirm that yes, Goose retains the Fedora "because he is just so fancy like that" and yes, the final version will "include extra HONKS".

BioShock™

OK, so I know Eurogamer's actual birthday was two days ago, but as is our style, the Eurogamer video team is once again Late to the (birthday) Party.

Over the past three years, we've been introducing each other to our favourite (and/or least favourite) games from yesteryear as part of our Late to the Party series. During that time we've shared our love (and/or hatred) for over one hundred and fifty different games and thanks to this, we've been able to make a compilation episode of LTTP that features one game from every year that Eurogamer has been alive.

In this video, Aoife, Zoe and I are joined by some friendly video team faces from the past (who?!) as we play our way through the 20 years worth of games, including 1999's Dino Crisis, 2006's Gears of War and 2017's PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Basically, if you want a healthy dose of nostalgia (or just want to feel rather old) this is the video for you!

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea

We pass through passages and hallways everyday without pause. They're boring, empty, uneventful dead-spaces unworthy of consideration - not so much architecture to stop and appreciate, as infrastructure to quickly pass through. All they do is channel things around buildings, moving us from one room to the next. But while we so often take these in-between areas for granted, rushing down them in order to reach places of real importance, they can also be incredibly evocative.

Corridors are anxious, uneasy places, and horror has a history of using them to put us on edge. They're rarely the site of explicit terror or violence, but they lead us there. Zones of anticipatory fear, the corridor is conducive to horror through its ability to heighten suspense and gesture to the unknown. What lies around the corner, or beyond that door? Every hallway is a world of undetermined possibility.

Roger Luckhurst, a professor at the University of London and expert in all things horror, recently penned a book about corridors. He's quick to mention the Resident Evil series and the various facilities of the Umbrella Corporation, where horror is sometimes confined and squeezed into a particularly pure form. On many occasions the video game corridor is a gauntlet (in the Resident Evil spinoffs for example). In these corridor shooters, the constrictive form of the horror hallway becomes a condenser for an adrenaline-fuelled onslaught where you're forced to hack or blast your way through a narrow, zombie-infested space.
