Resident Evil 2

After more than two years of tinkering with the RE Engine, master modder Praydog is close to releasing a VR mod for the Resident Evil 2 remake that boasts motion controller support and the ability to play through the game in either third or first-person.

While this mod is yet to be released to the general public, myself and a handful of other VR fans have been given access to an incredibly impressive early build, which you can see in action in this week's episode of VR Corner.

Rather than playing through Leon's campaign, which has been featured heavily in other videos about this mod, I've decided to slip into Claire Redfield's signature red leather jacket for this Let's Play in order to show off a fresh perspective. In it, I make my way through the Gas Station and Raccoon City Police Department portions of Claire's chapter using the mod's first-person mode for added immersion.

"The idea that you carry the seeds of your own destruction around with you, always, and that they can erupt at any time, is... scary. Because there is no defense against it; there is no escape from it" - David Cronenberg.

THIS FEATURE AND THE IMAGES IN IT ARE NOT SAFE FOR WORK. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

How many swipes or bites can your avatar sustain before its body is devoured and you fade to a death screen? Resident Evil has always involved physical maintenance: locked doors and blocked passages are overcome by shifting keys from room to inventory to item-box, and back again. But it's also a game of bodily preservation, as well as the destruction this necessitates. Why waste time with a handgun plinking away at a zombie's noggin when you can simply slip by? It can even be advantageous to take a hit. An attack might drop your obscure electrocardiography signal from "fine" to "danger", but there's always time to hit the menu button in panic and recover your health with a delicious herb.

At this point, most who've played the wonderful Resident Evil 2 remake agree Mr. X, the relentlessly skulking, foot-stomping, face-punching monstrosity is a terrifying foe for poor old Leon and Claire.

Mr X. pops up as you explore the Raccoon Police Station. You can often hear him coming, his footsteps worryingly close to your location. But sometimes he manages to creep up on you - Mr. X can be remarkably stealthy for such a big boy - before knocking your lights out with a hay-maker to the jaw. And then, sometimes, you'll open a door and he'll be there, his horribly-wrinkled face staring blankly at you. Mr. X makes the Resident Evil 2 remake a proper squeaky bum time - and I love it.

But I've often wondered what's going on behind the scenes. How do the video game tricksters at Capcom get Mr. X to work in the way he does? How does he skulk, exactly? Off camera, what's he up to? How does he find you? And what makes him tick?

A PC mod has replaced Resident Evil 2's terrifying Mr. X with an even scarier sight: Thomas the Tank Engine.

The mod - which is available now on Nexus Mods - replaces just the visuals, so for the complete and thoroughly terrifying experience, you might want to take the author's suggestion and switch the sound files, too.

In the description, the author just says: "Honestly, I dont know why i made this."

Here's a thong: have you considered what Mr. X from the Resident Evil 2 remake looks like underneath that trenchcoat and hat?

Wonder no more! There's a mod for that.

The Beachboy X mod, available to download from NexusMods, replaces Mr. X's coat with "fancy swimwear, flip-flops and sunglasses". In short: it gives Mr. X an Umbrella-themed thong.

Capcom's released '98 costumes for both Leon and Claire to wear in the Resident Evil 2 remake - and they're as nostalgia-fuelled as you could hope for.

Both costumes are a free download right now, and each turns Leon and Claire into their polygonal originals from the PSone era.

Here's how Leon looks:

Resident Evil 2's free Ghost Survivors DLC arrives on February 15th, Capcom has announced.

Ghost Survivors, if you missed the original reveal, takes the form of three 'what if' stories built around characters you meet during Resident Evil 2's main campaign. In a new post on the PlayStation Blog, Capcom likens Ghost Survivors to Resident Evil 2's infamous The 4th Survivor and Tofu Survivor modes, but rather than guiding Hunk or an errant bit of soya through Racoon City, you'll step into the shoes of three characters that, in canon terms at least, never survived the zombie outbreak.

There are, however, some major differences between Resident Evil 2's classic Survivor modes and the new Ghost Survivor campaigns. For starters, while Tofu and 4th Survivor limit players to weapons provided at the outset, it's possible to collect new equipment throughout the three new modes. Don't expect to find them strewn around the environment though; items can only be acquired by defeating backpack zombies or by raiding vending machines.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 is a remake of the 1998 classic - reimagined with a over-the-shoulder perspective and some new surprises.

Fear not, though, as this is the same Police Station and Raccoon City you remember - it's dense, dangerous easy to get lost in, and full of tough puzzles.

Our Resident Evil 2 walkthrough explains how to complete Leon's campaign from start to finish, as well as the start of Claire's - after all, there is some crossover between the two storylines.

Alright, you've seen the Paranormal-Activity style fixed cameras mod for the Resident Evil 2 remake - but if that didn't spook you enough, you can now get up close and personal with all the horrors of Raccoon City thanks to this first-person mod. Just what you always wanted.

The PC mod by praydog, which is currently available for download on GitHub (thanks, ResetEra), adjusts the player perspective to help you get inside Leon and Claire's heads... literally. It's a little rough around the edges, with wobbling and the occasional slip back into third-person, but it's not bad for a work in progress - and I suppose shaky-cam makes it somewhat scarier anyway. If you want a preview, check out the video by Sticky below:

According to Sticky's instructions, to install this mod you'll need to download the binary from AppVeyor and move the file "dinput8.dll" into the Resident Evil 2 main root folder.

A modder has added fixed camera angles to the Resident Evil 2 remake - and the results are impressive indeed.

Capcom's wonderful remake of the PSX classic reimagines Resident Evil 2 with a modern, third-person over-the-shoulder camera perspective more akin to Resident Evil 4 and without the tank controls of the first few games in the series.

Tinkerer Enveloping Sounds has released a couple of videos showing what Resident Evil 2 remake with fixed camera angles would look like. The first shows Leon's intro at the gas station.
