Praey for the Gods

Praey Of The Gods initially looks too similar to Shadow Of The Colossus for comfort. And then you think: why wouldn't> someone make another game where you climb and bring low gigantic beasts? After almost three years in early access, Praey has reached v1.0, adding two new boss battles in the process.

Praey For The Gods was forced to change its name from Prey> For The Gods, after Prey publisher Zenimax opposed the new trademark. Their platoon of lawyers, who I can only imagine swung in through the windows of the tiny three-man studio and started furiously tipping over desks and tearing phones out of the walls, were concerned that consumers would confuse this game, about traipsing around a desolate tundra murdering hairy giants, with their> game, about turning into a lemon on a haunted space station orbiting the moon.

It was, ironically enough for a game about fighting massive monsters, a David and Goliath situation. But if there were to be any confusion between this game and another, it wouldn t be with Prey. It would be with the PS2 classic that heavily inspired it, Shadow Of The Colossus. Praey For The Gods doesn t so much wear its influence on its sleeve, as sneak into its influence s bedroom to wear its perfume and try on all of its underwear, while strutting around in front of the mirror singing hello boys, my name s Shadow Of The Colossus, boop-boop-be-doo .

Not every enemy in Praey For The Gods is an enormous hairy Shadow Of The Colossus-styled monster, but there’s enough of the big brutes to make me excited for today’s early access debut. The crowdfunded work of three-man crew No Matter Studios, it’s undoubtedly inspired by Team Ico’s spectacular boss-hunt, but also integrates a bit of Zelda-like exploration armed with glider and hookshot. There’s a little bit of survival sandbox in here too, with the player hunting for food and building fires for warmth between giant hunts. See the launch trailer below.

Prey for the Gods [official site], the crowdfunded surive-o-action game heavily inspired by Shadow of the Colossus, is now named Praey for the Gods. It’s a rubbish name but it is a trademarkable one. Developers No Matter Studios have made this change because Zenimax, the owners of Bethesda, thought Prey for the Gods was too close to their trademark for Prey. Rather than spend their limited funds on battling Zenimax’s lawyers, No Matter agreed to change the name. The Suits didn’t object to Praey for the Gods, a title close to one No Matter had originally considered anyway, so here we are. Here ends the threat of people mistakenly thinking Prey for the Gods is, I don’t know, an ultra-exclusive limited edition of Prey reserved for religious leaders. … [visit site to read more]
