derezzed in the crematorium

French electronic music duo Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter often wear large shiny helmets to make up the sound of Daft Punk, headgear that often remind me of French firefighter Gallet F1-SF helmets. I like to think that they are not in fact firefighters in the future, but CYBERRACING CAR drivers just taking a break to chill in the club and create some sweet beats for assorted dancingpeople.

Distance is the sort of arcade racing game you imagine Daft Punk procured their snazzy helmets from – the developers claim it’s Trials Evolution + Rush 2049 + Halo + Tron: Legacy, and it’s out on Steam Early Access on the 9th of December on Windows, Mac and Linux.

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Every Sunday, we reach deep into Rock, Paper, Shotgun’s 141-year history to pull out one of the best moments from the archive. This week, Alec’s 2009 retrospective of Microsoft oddity Skifree.>

Why? Why does he want to eat me? What did I ever do to him?

I’m just skiing, man. I’m not a threat to him or his people. I can’t believe I taste that great, underneath this garish windcheater and plastic boots. I’m certainly not going to replace all the calories he spends chasing me down a frozen mountain slope at about 90mph. He wants to eat me because he’s just a massive bastard. There’s no other possible explanation.

As I roamed the murky, blustery undershelf of the PC gaming dark, snuffling through bright flashes and old command lines, little pinpricks of pixels making freckles over my skin, I heard a voice. The voice was Alice’s, and she called to me from her outpost by the tea-make in Stepney. All of a sudden my hand thirsted for a rein, the noise of the electric plains in my ears; I gazed into the ochre mesas and stacks drifting into the horizon, and with a six-string on my back I plunged through into Owen Deery’s Colt55 desert of frictionless gaze, to find a horse.

Sundays are for re-watching the Star Wars trailer. It does not regress me to a nine-year-old, but I do like it when the spaceships go woosh past the other spaceships. If you are full up on woosh, perhaps you’d like the fine collection of words below instead.

Should have called that electrician

The title of this game made me think of 1) Captain Birdseye and 2) a ‘Crow’s Nest’, you know, that pirate lookout post thing on tall ships. So now what I am thinking of is a game where you play Captain Birdseye on a mission to go and get some tasty fish fingers and you are travelling the high seas in the Crow’s Nest to locate some fish fingers that some nasty fish finger bandits have dumped in the sea. In this scenario the fish fingers float, so you can scoop them up with a net and then put it in your treasure chest so your mum can heat them up later.

It turns out that The Crow’s Eye is actually a suspense-laden first-person ‘terror’ adventure with hints of crafting. So. I guess there’ll be no fish fingers?

So for today’s Supporter post I decided to try something a little different. It’s not a podcast but it’s an audio episode of sorts – a Wot I Heard which zeroes in on Frontier’s space sim Elite: Dangerous. We’ve spoken to Frontier CEO David Braben about the refund situation, we’ve interrupted Brendy’s afternoon of space adventures to talk about what he loves and hates about said space adventures and we’ve collected a handful of stories from the people who play the game.

Ants are pretty fascinating creatures to just sit and watch. The ease with which they coordinate themselves to accomplish things no single ant could manage alone and their apparent sense of purpose are remarkable. Wouldn’t it be interesting to experience what it’s like to be the one trying to orchestrate that organisation. Fancy being the hive mind ant god and seeing if you can keep a colony of ants running with as much precision as an actual colony seems to? Well, Formicarium is the game for you, so long as you don’t mind seeing copious amounts of legs skittering everywhere.

Attack of the Labyrinth

Grand music and tiny adventurers have always been a thing for me; I absolutely love seeing adventurers dwarfed by the scale of their quest. Zoomed-out cameras, sweeping music with a sense of doom, a hero who seems far from a match for his surroundings… Attack of the Labyrinth was not on my radar whatsoever until this morning, but I’m now really interested in seeing more from this miniature adventure. Thankfully there’s a playable demo out now for the game as it launches into paid beta.

When I was growing up, I dreamt of going to space for the isolation. I was one of those weird kids who thought the idea of being somewhere quiet, undisturbed and far away from the world was quite appealing. Then I played Mass Effect and realised space is much cooler when you and a group of friends grab a ship and head off into the unknown together, exploring unexpected worlds and changing lives as a big happy space family. With that in mind, this beta trailer for Interstellaria really made me stop and take notice. My life definitely needs a more avenues for building a cool team of space buddies to kill stuff and explore worlds with.
