Plague Inc: Evolved

is a game about killing off the human race with a disease. Billions of human beings are boiled down to numbers of healthy, infected, and dead, allowing players to neatly sidestep the potential well of moral turmoil that such subject matter invites (especially in these times), and instead focus on evolving their plague.

It’s a fairly challenging little strategy game that can be played out in the span of perhaps 10 minutes. And, strangely, it’s just about the only strategy game I routinely play where I haven’t the slightest desire to get any better at it.

I wouldn’t blame you if Plague Inc: Evolved cuts a little too close to home right now. Fortunately, Ndemic are reversing their infectious simulation with The Cure, an upcoming expansion that tasks you not with spreading your monstrous diseases, but with using medical, social and political tools to help stem the spread of a virus until a cure can be found. Coming soon to Steam, the devs have also announced that the update will be free to download until the Covid-19 outbreak is under control.

A deadly new disease is spreading its way across China and East Asia. With over 840 confirmed cases of the pneumonia-like Coronavirus confirmed this month, concerned players are looking for ways to cope with the threat of infection. Increasingly, they’re turning to Plague Inc: Evolved. Ndemic Creations’ outbreak management sim saw Steam player counts skyrocket in the last few days. Keen to avoid an outbreak of disinformation, Ndemic have warned against using their global sickness sim as a basis for real-world disease control.

In the spirit of the week known to the people of Britain as “Oh God, oh Jesus, oh God, oh Jesus,” infection-spreading simulator Plague Inc: Evolved recently added a simulation of “fake news”. It is a game of how things transmit between people, only this time we’ll be trying to disseminate harmful information. Even the term “fake news” itself has more facets than one game could capture but Plague Inc’s attempt might have some good grounding because it’s made in partnership with fact-checking charity Full Fact. Maybe this can distract you during this awful election week. I had a play and failed to convince the world that Deadly Premonition 2 was real.

The people have spoken. The people, it turns out, would like anti-vaxers to be added to Plague Inc, an infect ’em up inspired by (well, copied from) hit noughties flash game Pandemic. You play as a disease attempting to eradicate humanity, like a viral incarnation of Nickelback*. Anyone who says Change.org never has a meaningful impact on the world is a fool.

Developers Ndemic Creations have heard your cries, and announced a special scenario involving anti-vaxers. An easier one, presumably.

Plague Inc: Evolved [official site] typically has you behind the reigns of a pathogen with the objective of killing the Earth’s population. This week’s Shadow Plague update has added quite a different new virulent force, one with a fondness for crushed velvet. … [visit site to read more]

One of the commonly used phrases in tech and games to describe a foolproof ease of use is even your mom . So simple even your mom could do it . That s where this article starts. Even your mom could play this game. But what do we mean by that beyond touch-based or click-only interfaces, and games produced for the often dismissed casual market? And, actually, how hard is it to learn to play a game? I decided to run a small experiment: let s be ambitious, let s introduce my mother to 6 PC games and not just easy games a mixed bag of different genres, control systems and approaches. Let s actually sidestep those assumptions about a huge part of our (Western) world communities, and see what it is for a mother, my mother, to play popular independent PC games.

Plague Inc: Evolved [official site] is, at heart, ye olde Flash game Pandemic. Players design and evolve an infection to spread across humanity and, ultimately, wipe out all 7.4 billion of us blights upon the face of the Earth. Around that, though, Plague Inc adds all sorts of new and exciting ways to kill us vermin, mod support, competitive multiplayer and, now, co-op too. After two years in Early Access, Plague Inc: Evolved has reached version 1.0 and properly launched. Possibly ejected as a virulent sneeze on a crowded train. The game slrrrrpps down your cheek. You politely clear your threat and pretend not to notice, muttering about the Evening Standard’s Sudoku.
