We've made a small update to the game to change how the menus work for Workshop maps in the game to significantly improve load times and performance when subscribed to hundreds or thousands of maps.

When first viewing the Workshop maps in the menu after this update there might be some additional hitching due to any cached thumbnail images being converted to a different format, but following that it should be much smoother.

If you're subscribed to over 1000 levels/packs on the Workshop you might have experienced several days where they were unplayable in the game last week. This was due to some changes made by Steam which we were able to bring to their attention and they quickly fixed the problem and it shouldn't be an issue again going forward.

This update is exclusively related to the performance of Workshop menus, but we'll have more updates and improvements coming next year.

Version 1.2.3
  • Changed how the Player Created Levels menus work to increase performance and reduce load times

Paint the Town Red - Eternic
Version 1.2.2 is now available and adds a new Scenario modifier 'Friends Forever' which stops any friends you've made from turning against you at the end of a level. The update also includes new Level Editor additions such as player and enemy damage zones and the ability to create jump points so enemies can jump between areas on your levels.

We've also redone every enemy hand hold for all the weapons in the game so weapons should now be more accurately held by enemies. A full changelist of all the additions and fixes is below.

Player and Enemy Damage Zones
Setting up the new enemy and player damage zones is rather easy as these are just new properties available on standard Logic Zones. You can adjust how much damage is done to players and enemies and how often.

Jump Links on Waypoints
Jump links or 'Nav Links' are a new addition to the Waypoint props that will let enemies either jump from one waypoint location to another connected waypoint, or to teleport between them if desired. As part of setting this up we also fixed some bugs related to enemies facing the wrong direction while jumping and that enemies would not use Teleporters as part of their navigation. Now the existing Teleporters and the new waypoint nav links will be considered in the pathfinding calculation of enemies.

Changelist

Version 1.2.2
  • Added Friends Forever modifier
  • Added Player and Enemy damage options to Logic Zones in the Level Editor
  • Added nav link options to Waypoint props in the Level Editor
  • New outline effects for weapons and powers
  • Re-setup all weapon hand hold positions for enemies to be correct for left and right hands
  • Adjusted whether some weapons are 1 or 2 handed for enemies
  • Minor memory allocation improvements
  • Added a workaround for the Capture Device potentially not triggering especially if caused by infinite durability mods
  • Fixed enemies not choosing to use teleporters as part of their navigation
  • Fixed enemies not rotating to face the direction they're going to jump
  • Fixed the Lights Out spotlight getting obscured sometimes when near a wall
  • Fixed Workshop level buttons in the UI having overflowed text for long names and misaligned asterix
  • Fixed spotlight in Light Out modifier getting occluded if player's back was against some walls
  • Fixed some menu options not showing for players in multiplayer at the right times
  • Fixed some Berserk glow bugs with the Top Down modifier
  • Fixed UVs on the back and bottom faces of the head in the Texture Editor being different than in the game
  • Fixed enemies dying if a severed body part falls into a kill zone
  • Fixed incorrect buttons showing for multiplayer clients on the UI after winning a level
  • Fixed multiplayer host not seeing the kill count in Workshop levels
  • Fixed text getting set to bad positions when grouped
  • Fixed some newer weapons getting set to 0,0,0 if set as static
  • Fixed blood decals not attaching to nunchucks
  • Fixed Arena Quit to Menu button not working under certain conditions

Paint the Town Red - South East Games
Version 1.2.1
  • Level Editor: Added a 'Shard Lords Can Teleport' level option
  • Level Editor: Added some Beneath class idle and Arena spectator animations
  • Changed the Custom Texture Menu to have more camera control over preview character
  • Fixed issues that could lead to Beneath multiplayer save slot mix ups
  • Fixed zombies having human voices in Workshop levels
  • Fixed Zombies and Tentacle Mutants having some incorrect settings applied in Workshop levels
Paint the Town Red - Eternic

Version 1.2.0 is now available and brings a bunch of new shooter focused Modifiers to the Scenarios, a variety of new Level Editor options to support characters using guns and other ranged weapons, and some Multiplayer improvements including allowing some Modifiers in coop Scenarios and allowing the host to change the level at any time.

Scenario Modifiers

The new modifiers available in the Scenarios are: Easy Shooter, Hard Shooter, Pistols Shooter, Nailguns Shooter, Primitive Shooter, Unlimited Ammo, Double Jump, and Shields Everywhere.

Shooter Modifiers

The Shooter modifiers give all the enemies in a Scenario a variety of different ranged weapons with different aggressiveness, accuracy and range settings depending on the modifier.

  • Easy Shooter has less aggressive weapons and AI
  • Hard Shooter has the toughest weapons and more aggressive and accurate AI
  • Primitive Shooter uses only non-firearm ranged weapons
  • Pistols Shooter features only the various pistols in the game
  • Nailguns Shooter gives everyone a nailgun
There are so many creative modifier combinations to find that can make things more fun or more challenging.

Double Jump Modifier
The Double Jump modifier gives the player the ability to perform a second jump in the air. In Workshop levels that include fall damage, this will also allow the player to prevent fall damage with a last second jump.

Shields Everywhere Modifier
The Shields Everywhere modifier puts a variety of shields throughout the Scenario levels and can be very helpful when combined with the Shooter modifiers.

Level Editor Changes

New Weapons: MP5 and M1911
In addition to being available in the new Scenario modifiers, the MP5 and M1911 are now available to use in the Level Editor.

Assigning Characters to a Weapon
Using the Logic connection system you can now assign a weapon to a character in the Level Editor and have them either immediately have it when the level starts, or have it be something they go to pick up once combat starts.

Ambient Lighting Preview
You can now see what your level will look like with the ambient light value you've set while editing it. This makes setting up lighting for dark levels approximately 28000x easier.

Multiplayer Modifiers and Level Select
Many of the Scenario modifiers available in single player are now also available to use in the Scenario in multiplayer. This includes all the new Shooter modifiers, the class modifiers and many more.

The host of a multiplayer match can now restart or change the level and mode from the 'pause' menu or after dying in Beneath or the Arena.

There have also been a lot of other additions, improvements and fixes in this update. Thanks to everyone that was able to test out the WIP versions of this update over the past week and provide valuable feedback. Special recognition to hollowedcommander on the official Discord server for being the MVP of bug reporting for this build.
