Override: Mech City Brawl - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

Giant stompy robots, even more giant kaiju, Tokyo getting trashed repeatedly and up to four players controlling a single mech Power Rangers style. Override: Mech City Brawl leans hard into its anime super-robot aesthetic, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Out today, it’s a mech fighting game by The Balance Inc for up to four players, solo or co-op, online or split-screen. While Sega’s Virtual-On and the PS2’s War Of The Monsters are good points of reference, I can’t think of any game quite like this. Take a look at the bombastic launch trailer as I try to explain it a bit.

Looking at the latest trailer for The Balance’s giant robo-biffer Override: Mech City Brawl, I’m officially jealous I wasn’t able to take it for a spin at EGX last month. Looking a bit like old PS2 gem War Of The Monsters, it’s a game about oversized cartoon robots knocking seven shades of steel out of each other, or sometimes alien invaders if you’re running solo. It all looks a little Pacific Rim meets Megas XLR, and that’s pretty much a match made in heaven, so far as I’m concerned. Below, a fresh peek at the game, its features and its big ugly space-monsters.

Matt: After four days of hosting panels, interviewing developers, streaming games on camera and poking at as many as we could on the show floor, Team RPS has returned from the hallowed halls of EGX. There’s just one week left until a borderline-biblical plague of developers descend upon Birmingham to showcase their up-and-coming games to all. This great gathering shall be known as EGX 2018 and starts on September 20th, running until the 23rd.

There’s going to be hundreds of games on show there across all platforms, featuring developers of all shapes and sizes – both physically and business-wise. While I’ll be sadly missing out on the fun (someone’s got to man the news desk), here’s a few choice PC games that’ll be at the show, and everyone should be checking out. (more…)

Override: Mech City Brawl

Oversized, city-smashing fighting games represent an ironically small and underappreciated genre, so I was grinning the entire way through Override: Mech City Brawl’s debut trailer below. It’s an arcade-style, over-the-shoulder 3D fighter in the vein of War of the Monsters or perhaps Virtual On. Players go 1v1 or 2v2 and trample buildings, pick up oversized power-up weapons and generally knock seven enormous metal bells out of each other until there’s just one team standing. Override will be be flattening Tokyo this December.
