Dear friends! The last couple of months I've been preparing for a new frontier in my game development. But this stage I will keep a secret for now, but it forced me to study more deeply work on optimization of games. In this regard, I have prepared a major update related to the optimization and stable operation of the game.

Since I initially optimized the performance of the game well, despite its rather high requirements at a small size, this is quite a normal load for the Unreal Engine 4, considering that I tried to use all the modern achievements in the field of graphics. The game was praised for good optimization, although there were claims that the Witcher 3 or GTA 5 work better. It has a simple explanation. I tried to use in game such receptions, which in games rarely use or not use at all, in particular I'm talking about mirrors. In" Never Again " mirrors are part of the gameplay, they are placed throughout the game and in some locations they are interactive, that is, they can be rotated, reflect rays of light or teleport. The mirror is probably the hardest thing that kills FPS in games, because it renders twice everything that happens on the stage, so it was necessary to sacrifice something else.

As a result, for my weak computer (GT740, i5) I was able to get +(5-10) FPS at the maximum level of quality. Now for me there is a stable 30fps in the game. Along with the optimization I fixed a number of old minor bugs that slightly spoiled the impression of the game and I added a few new settings.
  1. Each object in the game is assigned a draw distance. There wasn't this function before, because I thought that the engine does it automatically and it is not necessary in confined spaces.

  2. I redesigned the lighting in some locations, now the GPU load is less and looks better!

  3. I reworked some heavy materials. Moved simple looping animations such as swinging swings or fire glow into the material, thus the load from the CPU moved to the GPU.

  4. Added a few new settings:
    • Ambient Occlusion is a very heavy Post Process and if you disable It you will get several FPS.

    • Depth Of Field is a blur effect, which is also very heavy, turning it off will raise FPS in cut scenes, in stare mode and when viewing the diary.

    • Just by popular demand in the game added Invert Camera Y and X.

  5. During the fall into the water from the bridge, Sasha tried to delete, on old AMD processors it led to a hang of the game for a few minutes. I could not catch this bug for a long time due to the fact that Intel coped with it. Corrected.

  6. The Fear of darkness remained even with the flashlight on, if you use the inhaler with the flashlight on. It was solved by switching off / on the flashlight. Not a fatal bug, but a nasty one. Corrected.
And many other small bugs that I have been quickly fixed and forgotten)

Another important thing. Finally I updated the demo. Now after its completion you can continue from the place of the last save after buying the full version of the game. Those who are just planning to purchase and played the demo version of the game can clearly assess the evolution of graphics in the game.

At the moment, there is still a lot of work on optimization and stability. There will be a number of updates in this direction. For those who have not yet purchased "Never Again", you can now go through the demo version of the game for free and join us!

Steam's annual summer sale has begun! You can purchase the game at a 25% discount. This is a very important event for us because we were forced to get out of early access to the release without a discount, for a small no name game this is a big obstacle. Today is almost the second release or even the third if we take into account the release in early access:)

Also yesterday I rolled out the update to 3.1.5
  1. I rewrote the logic of the physical parts of the dolls in the cave, because of each collision played a lot of logical operations in this place strongly sagged fps. Optimized.
  2. Sometimes the damaged wire would hit the electricity even when the power was off. This problem could only be solved by rebooting the level. I never found a reason, so I rewrote the logic. I also added a check - if the sparks are off, the electric shock doesn’t work. Corrected.
  3. The default values in the " Smooth Camera” and “Fabric Simulation” settings are reversed. I noticed that some players complain that the camera motion makes them sick, it happened because I initially put a smooth camera. I do not know why I did it, I like the smooth movements of the camera. However, not all players knew about this setting. Sasha's dress simulation is now enabled by default. Initially, I turned off the fabric physics for optimization, but noticed that many players with powerful computers do not include this setting. I was upset by the fact that I tried to make it beautiful, but no one saw it:)
  4. If you do not use the inhaler after a meeting with the tank and enter the location with mirrors, it gave rise to a large number of bugs. This problem could be found through experiments. A reasonable solution I found only one thing - disable asthma when entering the location with mirrors.

I made the update to 3.1.3 about 2 weeks ago, but I didn’t find the strength to report the fixes after the release. Now I report two updates at once:
  1. There was no change in the animation of falling from a bridge with an asthma attack. Instead of the sound of falling into the water, the sound of falling to the ground was played. Corrected.
  2. I accidentally added one extra page to the “The train”note. Corrected.
  3. The sound of Emma's footsteps rarely remained in the lighthouse. Corrected.
  4. If you pick up the phone with the flashlight off, traces didn’t appear. Now Sasha turns on the flashlight if it is off.
  5. Removed all unnecessary lighting from inactive items, which misled the player. Corrected.
  6. There wasn’t a lock texture on white doors. Corrected.
  7. The boarded-up windows had subtitles, but no voice. Added.
  8. If the Queen of Spades caught the player while erasing the last mirror, she didn’t disappear, but continued to pursue the player. Corrected.
  9. If the electric shields were activated before receiving the " Save Stephan” task, then after completing the quest the task wasn’t crossed out. Corrected.
  10. Sometimes after teleportation, Sasha's dress was lifted, so that after each teleportation, the physics of the dress was reset to default. Corrected.
  11. If you stand on a chair and look under mother's bed, the Queen of Spades didn’t disappear. Corrected.
  12. The musical theme of the Queen of Spades didn’t stop when we were going into the forest without killing her. Two songs play at the same time. Corrected.
  13. If you kill the Queen of Spades and restart the game you lose the dial of the cuckoo clock . Corrected

I noticed that some players do not understand whether the game is released or not. Officially came out! The game can be played!

We found a few bugs, there are small - visual, and hard bugs - make the game impassable.
  1. Statistics. There was a serious bug that did not delete the statistics if you start a new game after the full passage. Because of this it was possible to get some achievements without passing the game. Now it's fixed, the loophole is closed!)

  2. I fixed some issues with the game menu that had to restart the game.

  3. I also fixed a very serious bug that had to start the game again. If the player standing in the bath pressed the mirror with a painted stairs, then after the cut scene the player was thrown back into the bath. I hope you won’t find such serious bugs anymore.

  4. After the death of the bosses there were a subtitle with their last sentence sometimes. Fixed.

  5. If you die of asthma near the Doll Golem before his first meeting, the game moved the player to another location. You had to restart the game. Fixed.

  6. In a let’s play video I saw a player accidentally flew out of the lighthouse. I didn’t understand why this happened, but just in case the teleportation point put away from the window).
