Hey everyone! Ever wanted a peek behind the curtain to see what really went into making Backrooms Break? I've just released a very personal and detailed devlog covering the entire wild two-year solo development journey – from the very first concept back in 2022, through all the challenges, obstacles (including pneumonia!), unexpected successes, costly mistakes, right up to launch and hitting an incredible sales! It's an honest look at the grind, and the joy, behind the game you (hopefully!) enjoy playing.

Spartan Chosen Exclusive Attire: [Dragon Slayer]
During the Battle of Thermopylae, 300 Spartan warriors stood against the vast Persian army, forming a wall of flesh and steel.
Even when faced with fiercest dragons, these warriors will not falter -- they rise, fearless and unyielding, until the beast is brought to its knees.
We will introduce you the exclusive attire: Spartan Chosen - Dragon Slayer:

 
Design Concept:
Only those Spartan warriors tempered in blood and fire earn the title of Dragon Slayer.
The draconic crests emblazoned upon their armor and shields symbolize both their valor and indomitable spirit.
Remember this: when moonlight kissed their crimson spearpoints, they became the eternal silver flame illuminating the pass at Thermopylae.
 
Legendary Shield & Spear Attire: [Scourge of Cadmus]
The highly anticipated Shield & Spear attire has finally arrived! This meticulously designed set is not only a visual breakthrough but also a stunning fusion of myth and might.
 
Inspired by Cadmus, the legendary dragonslayer and founder of Thebes, this set incorporates dragon motifs in every detail. When equipped, dynamic dragon wings unfurl from the flanks of the shield and spear, moving fluidly with the wearer’s motion -- bringing the weaponry to life.
 
At its peak, a dragon's head emerges from the spear’s tip, unleashing flames in a blaze of fury. This awe-inspiring spectacle ignites the battlefield and strikes terror into the hearts of your enemies, heralding your arrival with the power of dragon.
 
Every scale, every ember has been refined to perfection. From the intricate textures of the dragonhide to the immersive flame effects, this attire offers an unmatched visual and combat experience -- guaranteed to make you the center of every battlefield.
 
Effect Overview:
Dark purple aura with demonic undertones, dragon-themed effects -- such as wings sprouting mid-attack and a dragon head breathing fire upon strike.
 
Appearance Description:
"The Oracle Declares: Cadmus shall become a mighty dragon, leading a foreign horde to ravage the Aegean realms."
O Cadmus, Dragon Slayer, first king of Thebes! Yet mortals cannot escape divine machinations. When he severed the head of Ares' dragon son, calamity was sealed. The hero became the enemy of heroes, his soul cursed to wander eternally, barred from the Underworld...
Cadmus' fate remains shrouded. Some claim he wielded the dragon's skull as his shield and horn as his spear, his essence merging with the shield as a watchful eye—a silent vow to the gods: Cadmus will have his vengeance.
 
Lore Reference:
Cadmus is a figure from Greek mythology, the founder of Thebes and grandfather of Dionysus. One of his feats was slaying the dragonic son of Ares; from where its teeth fell, warriors sprang forth. In many tales, Cadmus is cursed later in life or voluntarily transforms into a serpent.
The excerpt featured in the appearance description is inspired by the final lines of The Bacchae, a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides.

I’ll have the savage nature of a snake, as I lead my soldiers to the altars, to the tombs, in Greece. But even then, there’ll be no end to my wretched sorrows. The Bacchae tells the tragic tale of one of Cadmus’ grandsons, who shows irreverence toward Dionysus. As punishment, Dionysus manipulates the fate of Cadmus’ entire bloodline -- his grandson meets a brutal end, and Cadmus himself receives a dreadful prophecy.
 
This story is an artistic fusion of various legends, with a twist: Cadmus chooses defiance over fate.

PunjiVR - Sir Loin of Beef II
It's Here!

After about 14 months of development, PunjiVR Version 2 has finally been released to the main branch for all of you to enjoy. Version 2 is a total remake of PunjiVR, and it fixes and improves everything wrong with the original build while also paving a better path for future updates.

  • Last Stand (Endless wave defense mode that gets harder the longer you play)
  • Tunnel Rat (Collect 3 pieces of randomly placed intel and escape the Viet Cong tunnel system. Watch out for traps!)
  • Gun Truck (Defend the gun truck as long as you can. Each kill earns one point that can be saved up and spent on loadouts for you, armor and weapons for the truck, and ammo refills. Make sure to keep an eye on the truck's health and repair it with the wrench to keep it moving!)

What's Next?

Version 2 is the start of a new era for PunjiVR -- this is just the beginning.

A lot of exciting features are planned for the future, but I want to spend the next few major updates adding pure content to the game before I start work on anything major.

Closing:

It's a relief for me to finally see Version 2 take over the main build. Version 1 was decent and it had some good ideas, but it was just too messy to keep maintaining and adding to.

I know there's not a whole lot of content in the current build, but that will change very quickly over the course of the next few months, so stay tuned!

Over the course of its development, Version 2 was tested by a number of various community members and their help has been incredibly valuable, so I appreciate all of you who took the time to play around with it during the testing phase. I will continue to use the separate test branch for future updates, especially major ones, so if you're interested in taking part in that, head over to the Discord and get the 'tester' role to be notified of new releases.

I look forward to seeing what you all think about the new PunjiVR and, as always, I would love to hear your feedback and suggestions for it, so don't hesitate to let me know. You can do so in the comments of this post, on the forums, or through one of the social links below.

I'm excited to announce the next major update is already available for Beta Testers, and very soon will be released for everyone.

You can now travel south of Urendale, where you can explore a new town and complete 12 new quests. In addition the level cap has been raised to 6, and massive performance optimizations were added.

The complete changelog can be found here, in the steam forum Beta discussion. In the same post you can see instructions on how to join the Beta, everyone owning the game can join and start playing right away if they wish.

Please report any issues by replying to that same thread, if possible. In the same post you can find useful info about where to find log files.

Please keep a copy of your saves prior to the Beta, in case something goes wrong. I've been very careful and tested everything myself, but the update is huge and has tons of dialogue, some of it with complex scripted logic attached, and I am bound to make mistakes here and there.

Other than the new content, I'd like to comment on the optimized code, which should increase framerate by over 30% with zero sacrifices on visuals. This makes the game accessible for older systems, with is something I feel it's important. In the future I'll focus on improving loading times, which I know are longer than they should.
