Mondrian - Plastic Reality - lantanadan
Hi everyone. First off, I hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, and most importantly, Makersmas so far! It's been a very exciting time for us, what with all these massive updates hitting for the game left and right. This latest patch is no exception, as it fulfills the very promise of Makersmas: THE ABILITY TO MAKE STUFF!

Why mince words: Mondrian Maker had a pretty serious bug up until this point. The issue was a holdover from the old level format from the game's Early Access days, when block ordering was done very linearly, and a lot was dependent on each block's blockNumber value. This issue has been addressed by reassigning all blockNumber values whenever you save a level. The advantage to this is it not only fixes the above issue, but blocks will never got lost in the save process again. PHEW!

Next, to go along with this, downloading Workshop subscriptions from the Main Menu has also been fixed, so if you grab any of the new Makersmas levels, you'll be able to play them! Plus, if you upload any Creations of your own, other players can finally check them out too. NEATO!

A few tweaks have also come to the Museum to smooth out some sound effects and object ordering. Here are the full patch notes for both the game/Museum and Mondrian Maker.

Game
Features
  • Overall: Updated Steamworks API
  • Main Menu: Added text to Workshop notifications for both confirmations and errors on Subscription downloads
Changes
  • Museum: Rebalanced Gem RNG to make 1000 a bit less common, and 500 and 2000 a bit more common
Bug Fixes
  • Main Menu: Fixed Workshop Subscriptions not downloading. Get to makin’ stuff!
  • Museum: Fixed artpieces spawning behind paintings
  • Museum: Moved prize sound effects onto different channels to fix interruptions
Mondrian Maker
Bug Fixes
  • Reworked Block Numbers to never fall out of order. Numbering now gets entirely reset on loading a level, saving a level, and assigned individually when placed, based on the total number of blocks, rather than a global block iterator value.
  • Thanks to the above fixes, blocks will no longer go “missing” in the level data
  • Fixed a bug that would load into Testing Mode when sharing to Steam Workshop, if the Play window had been brought up before the Share window
Finally, in case you haven't heard, we're celebrating Makersmas, a holiday dedicated to self-promotion and all things creative! With the latest Mondrian Maker fixes, we'd love to see what you can cook up and share on Steam Workshop. We'll even share it further at our Mondrian Makers Instagram! We're posting one holiday themed level every day for the next couple of weeks too, so be sure to grab these and add them to your level collection. As they say, variety is the spice of life!

On a personal note, tomorrow is New Years, my birthday is a few days later, and I... really need a break. Like, seriously. Getting Mondrian Maker and Workshop fixed nearly gave me a heart attack. So other than uploading the Christmas levels and taking down the Makersmas trees on the 15th (there's still time to get your Achievements!!!), I think I need to take a few days off. I'm also not 100% sure what's gonna come next, but I do know there's more neat stuff already in the works for the Museum, and I'm absolutely looking forward to making that part of the game even more special in the new year. But for now, I sleep, and maybe catch up on my overeating.

Be safe, be merry, be creative, have a happy New Year, and thank you for playing!

Mondrian - Plastic Reality - lantanadan

Merry Makersmas everybody! Our first ever Creators Event is now LIVE! Makersmas is a celebration of self-promotion and all things creative. We welcome artists of all types to come onto our Steam Community or Discord to share their work with the world. The best part? You do not need to own the game to participate! Whether you’re a painter, photographer, graphic designer, 3D modeler, writer, musician, or even game developer, come show the world what you’re working on! Post your portfolios, social media links, Patreon, Kickstarter, KoFi, or other crowdfunding page as well. Makersmas lasts from today through January 15, and we have a lot in store.

While creatives will be able to enjoy each other’s work, share feedback, and maybe even land a contract gig or two on our Steam Community, players in Mondrian – Plastic Reality itself will be able to enjoy one of our biggest updates so far! The Museum has gotten a big overhaul, with two trees in either corner added for the extent of Makersmas – a pine tree and a crystalline tree. You can click each these trees once a day to earn free presents! The pine tree gives you museum decorations (walls, floors, pedestals, and artpieces) and the crystalline tree gives you a Gem worth between 300 and 3000 Gems! Three new walls, three new floors, six new artpieces, and eighteen(!) new pedestals have been added to the Museum as well, bringing the total possible museums you can build to over 1.5 million!

Makersmas will not just comprise a single game update though. Starting next week we will be diving back into Mondrian Maker with some more important bug fixes. Speaking of Mondrian Maker though, as this is Makersmas, we are inviting everyone to create Holiday-Themed works and share them to Steam Workshop! Mondrian Maker has already received a small update with the “Makersmas 2020” tag being automatically applied to uploaded works. At the end of Makersmas, we’ll give our favorite levels custom thumbnail frames to celebrate the occasion! We’ve also been sitting on seasonal-themed levels for some time now, so after the Mondrian Maker update we’ll be getting those uploaded too. All levels, whether from us or from the community, can be downloaded for free from Steam Workshop.

Here are the full patch notes. You can also view them on the Patch Notes page.

Features
  • Merry Makersmas! For our first ever Creators Holiday, we’ve added some special trees to the Museum. Both trees will let you open daily presents! The Christmas Tree on the left will grant you free Museum Decorations (Floors, Walls, Pedestals, and Artpieces); and the Crystal Tree on the right will give you a daily gem bonus!
  • Added Snow to the Main Menu for the duration of Makersmas
  • Added Holiday themed walls (Green Wreaths, Candy Cane, and Hannukart Ugly Weater) and Floors (Holiday Chevron, Red Tartan Carpet, and Blue Tartan Carpet) to the Museum. Unlock these from the Christmas Tree!
  • Added 18 new Wooden Pedestals, Golden Oak and Black Cherry, in Modern, Classic, and Tapered styles
  • Added 6 new Artworks: Maximum Antler, Judah’s Shield, Little Tree, Glass Bird, Lamp, and Backscratcher
  • Added 3 new Steam Achievements: Makersmas Riches (open 10 Gem presents), Makersmas Goodies (open 10 Decoration presents), and Makersmas Avarice (open 50 presents total)
  • Check out our Steam Community for all manner of other Makersmas goodies and see what the internet’s creative community is working on! Feel free to share your own work too, including crowdfunding campaigns! Keep it PG and no spamming, please.
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed a BIG bug in the Museum that caused inventory items (Pedestals, Artpieces, and Constructions) to disappear when scrolling through inventory pages with the arrows
  • Fixed Spotlights in the Museum not appearing when they were left blank the last time you left the museum
  • Fixed Artpieces in the Museum being placed behind the hanging artworks
  • Fixed an Adventure Mode bug where replaying levels loaded the wrong level
  • Fixed an Adventure Mode bug where replaying levels after beating the episode would result in blank levels
  • Fixed Museum Lightboxes sometimes having extended load times. The loading process has been optimized into a few loops, similar to level loading, rather than cramming it all into one line
  • Fixed Exhibit Mode not working in Night Mode
  • Fixed a Museum bug that would leave the control prompts up after skipping dialogue
  • Fixed a Museum bug that would let you select Inventory items from a blank box, resulting in… a bad kind of nothing.

A couple more things! What good is a Holiday party without an ugly sweater? Make sure to pick up limited edition Makersmas merch on our Redbubble shop! We have sweaters (obviously), shirts, and more with our Makersmas 2020 design on it, and these will only be available through January, so don’t miss out! You can also catch Danny in the first ever episode of “Hit Save!” a new podcast “to advocate for, initiate, support, and maintain video game preservation efforts through community-driven projects.” Danny and host Jonas chat for over an hour about the origins of Lantana Games, the Mondrian series, Plastic Reality‘s development, and 2021’s goals to open the game as a live events platform for the art world.

Once again, Merry Makersmas everybody! We’re excited to see the kinds of creative endeavors you’re undertaking, what you can cook up in Mondrian Maker, and how many of you will celebrate long enough to unlock all three of the Makersmas Steam Achievements. Don’t forget to grab the game on Steam if you haven’t, and as always, thank you for playing, and have fun!

Mondrian - Plastic Reality - lantanadan
Tis the Season!

Merry Makersmas everybody! Today, we're excited to announce our upcoming Holiday event, Makersmas, a celebration of self-promotion and all things creative, from painting to music and even game development itself. Makersmas will run from December 18 through January 15. Everyone is invited, and celebrating is super easy and super fun!

2020 has been... a year, to say the least. The artist community has been through a lot, and we want to do our small part to make things just a little bit better. Mondrian Maker and Steam Workshop integration was the first step toward achieving the goal of making Mondrian a welcoming home for creatives, and Makersmas is the second. Makersmas is a holiday to celebrate your works, your art, your creativity, for all the world to enjoy!

We could easily just make it snow in the main menu and leave it at that, but instead we're going all out. In the Museum, there are two Makersmas Trees. Interacting with these trees will give you presents every day during Makersmas! We'll be adding limited edition floors, walls, pedestals, and artpieces (more on these below). One tree gives you new decorations in the Construction and Spotlight menus, and the other tree gives you Gems! Each tree will grant you a new present every 24 hours. Make sure to check back to grab your new stuff!

We're also busy decorating the Museum with all manner of lights, wreaths, and such, just to make it a bit more cozy. But it doesn't stop there. Makersmas is nothing without the community, and so we're excited to announce our Creative Contests!

Creative Contests

On top of the above additions to the Museum, we are holding two – yes TWO – contests! One is our "Winter Gala" contest, and the other is our "Mondrian Makersmas" contest. Both contests have some common rules. Read below for more info on each!
  • Artworks must be Holiday-themed. Think snowy, wintry, colorful pieces!
  • No adult-oriented or blatantly disrespectful works
  • Original works only! No copyright infringement or plagiarized works will be accepted. However, works derivative of other pieces will be accepted under Fair Use laws
Call for Artists - Winter Gala Submissions

From now through December 11, we are opening up submissions for you to have your artworks featured in the Museum. These are the statuesque artworks that players can place on Pedestals.
There are only a couple of other rules:
  • Works must be sprites submitted in PNG format with transparent backgrounds
  • Submissions will not be accepted after 11:59pm EST on Friday, December 11
18 winners total will have their works added to the game, in no specific order. Winners will get their works added as Makersmas spotlight artpieces on Friday, December 18, 2020 and will be credited in the artpiece's in-game name. Purchase of Mondrian – Plastic Reality is not necessary, and winners will receive a complimentary copy of the game as well, to either keep for themselves or give to a friend.

If you're interested, please submit your artworks on this quick Google Form: https://forms.gle/fx1Bcf7dqGbcKLRJ6

Call for Creators - Mondrian Makersmas Submissions

From December 18 - January 15, all Mondrian Maker levels submitted to Steam Workshop will feature the “Makersmas 2020” tag. The ten best Holiday Themed levels with this tag will receive custom thumbnail frames, and the top 3 will also win full Mondrian series Steam keys (Abstraction in Beauty, Plastic Reality, and Soundtrack). Winners will be selected via a combination of community likes and internal selection.
  • Works must be created in Mondrian Maker, in *.mondrianlevel format, and submitted to Steam Workshop using Mondrian – Plastic Reality
  • Submissions will not be accepted after 11:59pm EST on Friday, January 15
Lantana Games will also be uploading new, Holiday-themed levels to the game's Steam Workshop during Makersmas, so keep an eye out for all the new content that will be hitting over the course of the event!

Requisite Fixes

Of course we have more updates well underway, like fixing up the Museum Inventory window, some Mondrian Maker oddities, and downloading Steam Workshop subscriptions. The goal is to have as many of these issues sorted as we can by the start of Makersmas, so keep an eye out for these updates.

As always, thank you for playing, and thank you for helping to build what we hope will be the most creative community ever in gaming! Looking forward to celebrating Makersmas with you all.

Mondrian - Plastic Reality - lantanadan
Hi all and Happy Thanksgiving! Yes indeed, we have another small update this morning with some very important fixes. They include:
Features
  • Reactivated the safety check for game speed
  • Added “Restore Default Settings” button under Options. This will delete the settings file and restore it with the Default one in the install folder. The Main Menu will automatically restart when you press this.
Changes
  • Added missing painting info in Museum
  • Removed volume fade requirement from ending cutscene so it will properly jump to the credits after
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed the Wins in a Row value not loading at the start of a level
  • Fixed a small visual bug where Sophie’s contact shadow would be in front of her in the Museum
  • Fixed a bug where the end cutscene music would need to finish before continuing to the Credits
  • Fixed background graphic not appearing on Credits

This patch clears up the issue some players were having with the game "freezing" at the start of a level. What was happening here was that their game speed was set to 0, so nothing would progress, as this value acts as a multiplier for nearly every element of the game. Some failsafes have been put in place to prevent this from happening, including:
  • A global setting to set the game speed to 1 (slow) if it drops to 0 again for whatever reason
  • A new "Restore Default Settings" button in the front Options menu. This button will delete the settings file in the AppData folder, and restore it with the default one in the Install folder. Pressing this button will restart the Main Menu in order to reload all settings properly. However, this will have no effect on your save progress, Gem Stacks, or leaderboards; simply your Volume, Background, Night Mode, Game Speed, Rumble, Screenshake, Screen Effects, and Razer Chroma RGB settings.

Thank you all for playing and submitting your bug reports. Keep em coming! Obviously we'll be taking a much needed break for the next couple days, but back to it after the weekend for the incoming Makersmas updates. Don't forget to nominate Mondrian for the "Sit Back & Relax" award in the Steam Awards!

Mondrian - Plastic Reality - lantanadan
Hi everyone! Mondrian - Plastic Reality has been updated to Version 1.0.4, with a couple small bug fixes. Just in time too, because today is the first day of the Steam Autumn Sale! Plastic Reality is 15% off, but Abstraction in Beauty and the Soundtrack are 51% off! This means you can grab the Series Bundle for an absolute steal right now. Don't miss out!

Now, it's a long shot, but we'd love if you nominated the game for the "Sit Back & Relax" Award. This feels like an award that was made for Mondrian. What other game gives you a Slow game speed, an Endless quick play mode, a Relaxing difficulty, and a Night Mode for that perfect 3am gaming experience? Go on. We'll wait. But don't hurt yourself.

With everything Mondrian has to offer - from a level editor to share creations with your friends, to a customizable Art Museum, 100 included levels, and even touchscreen controls, Mondrian is built from the ground up to be the best chill-out, artsy experience you can find.

It would be an honor to see the game nominated for this award, so please click the button right here to select "Sit Back & Relax!"

Meanwhile, fun things are being cooked up for December, and our first ever "Makersmas" celebration. December is going to be a lot of fun. Stay tuned and thank you for playing!

Mondrian - Plastic Reality - lantanadan
Mondrian - Plastic Reality has been updated to Version 1.0.3 with a major focus on Adventure Mode stability and controller compatibility. On top of making doubly sure the story will progress beyond Level 1, we've added more functionality to text boxes. Enter/A-button will skip to the end of a line of dialogue, and Space/Y-button will skip the story entirely and progress to the game. Text boxes have also been sped up very slightly.

There is also a new Option available, under Gameplay. You can now choose a Controller UI. We tried to automate this, and there's just too many variables and different controller names to condense them all into a few UI layouts. So, this is the compromise, and it still works pretty well. The default is an Xbox/Steam Controller UI, but you can also choose Dualshock 4, Dualshock 5, or Switch Pro Controller. Head to the Gameplay options menu to set yours appropriately.

(Also, if a control on your end is different than what the Pause menu map or the button prompts say, please let us know and we'll fix it asap!)

Features
  • Text boxes will now fill in the full line before skipping
  • Added button for skipping story entirely in text boxes (Space or Y button)
  • Added deeper Controller functionality in Museum. You can now open paintings, start levels, and close lightboxes with a Controller, meaning you can now play through all levels in Adventure Mode just with a Controller (controller functionality for customizing the museum be coming in 1.0.4 with more museum customization fixes)
  • Added Keyboard & Controller button prompts in the Museum to allow you to select paintings and start levels
  • Added button prompts in text boxes for skipping to the end of a dialogue line, or skipping a dialogue segment entirely
  • Added Controller UI selection under Options\Gameplay. You can choose between Xbox, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, and Switch button layouts. Keyboard & Mouse UI will automatically switch on if any key or mouse button is pressed.
Changes
  • The build has been updated into the latest stable version of Clickteam Fusion 2.5+, 292.29
  • You can now leave the Museum while Story is being typed out by clicking the Honeycomb icon in the upper left hand corner
  • The player’s data file has been changed to player_1.mondriandata to hopefully avoid further file issues
  • Replaced the Player array in global events with up-to-date version
  • Updated Pause screen control map to use Courier New
  • Pause screen controller will now match the one you’ve selected in the Options menu
  • Sped up story text typing just a smidge
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed text boxes not disappearing if they were skipped through too quickly
  • Fixed a typo in Adventure Mode
  • Fixed a bug that prevented a Story level from starting unless you moved Piet after the teleport animation played
  • Fixed a bug in Adventure Mode that prevented the selected difficulty from being properly set
  • Fixed Level 3 of Adventure Mode not loading the proper story
  • Fixed Level 3 of Adventure Mode not having the right ball
  • Fixed the game starting in Adventure Mode while the story was still typing out
Mondrian - Plastic Reality - lantanadan

It's launch day and The Adventure Begins right now!!! Welcome to Mondrian - Plastic Reality, the sequel to Abstraction in Beauty, which coincidentally launched on Steam five years ago today. We're very excited to be here, and now it's time to let you know what's in store:
  • The original three Quick Play modes from Abstraction in Beauty have returned! Endless is a super casual, no punishment way to play the game and stock up on Gems. Gem Hunt lets you gamble with the Gems you've found, going Double or Nothing in between each level. Arcade is a twenty round challenge with three lives and Leaderboard glory awaiting.
  • One hundred levels are included with the base package. This is a massive jump from Abstraction in Beauty's twelve levels, and includes recreations of Renaissance, Dutch Master, and other classic paintings.
  • Mondrian Maker is an integrated, easy-to-use toolset that lets you create and share your own Mondrian levels. Upload them instantly to Steam Workshop to share them with the world!
  • New Gameplay modes let you experience Mondrian and your creations in all new ways. Testing mode is accessible from Mondrian Maker, and gives you a no-powerups-no-thrills version of your level to see how you like it. Gallery mode is also accessible from Mondrian Maker, and lets you view your level in a print-ready fashion. We already have a Gallery Mode Guide available on the Steam Community, so make sure to read that to get the most out of your creations! Finally, Adventure mode is Mondrian's first ever Story mode. We'll talk about that more in a second.
  • Five playable characters, all with their own minor variations in control schemes, thanks to the inclusion of Top Speed, Acceleration, and Braking stats. Each character has their own nuances, so be sure to learn them to maximize your scores!
Alright so. That's all cool, but let's talk about Adventure Mode. This is Mondrian's first ever story mode, and we're going big. This mode drops you into an abandoned Art Museum, and it's up to you to rebuild it with the Gems you find inside the Plastic Reality. Right now there are four different elements to customize:
  1. Walls. The game is launching with twelve wall textures, ranging from Drywall to Mid Century Wooden Paneling. Collect gems to put your Museum under (very brief) construction and change them up! Don't worry, nothing here about "Pay 500 gems to speed up construction." The lights go down, the sound effects play, and your new wall is right there on fade up.
  2. Floors. The game is also launching with twelve floor textures, and whether you're feeling wood floors, tiles, bricks, carpet, or metal, there's something here for you. Your character's footsteps also match the material! Attention to detail is important. Same deal here as with Walls, no waiting for construction to end or paying to speed it up. It's just fast.
  3. Spotlights. These areas hold furniture, and at launch, we're starting with Pedestals. A Museum room has eight spotlights, and there are eighteen different pedestals you can pick from. Each one can hold a single...
  4. Spotlight Artworks. This is where the real customization comes in. At launch, there are also eighteen different artworks you can place on Pedestals, in two different packs: Plastic and Chessboard.
This means that there are over 400,000 possible Museums to be built at launch! Once a month we will be adding new packs to the Museum, as well as expanding it out to let you build more rooms as the Story grows episodically. Some packs will be added into the game for free, others will be available as premium DLC. Right now, the Museum is basically a dollhouse, so no matter how you decorate it, it's purely aesthetic. We have some cool plans for it for the future, but no matter what, you will not need to purchase DLC to "win" the Museum. It will always stay true to its dollhouse roots.

Speaking of the story, the game is launching with 10 story levels that explore Piet Mondrian's early days. You can access these levels from the Museum as their paintings appear on the wall. This first episode will also act as a Tutorial of sorts, letting you get to know the game one core mechanic at a time. Our goal is to launch a new story once a month, with Season 1 spanning 10 episodes. While most episodic games take a serial approach, we're treating our episodes as a series. We'll be jumping in and out and back and forth of all kinds of stories, so you'll be able to play them in any kind of order you want and not really miss out on overarching plot points.

Also a quick note: Story Mode especially is bound to receive bug fixes and optimizations in the first couple of weeks after launch, so please be patient as we wrangle it into shape for Episodes 2 and beyond.

Also also: if you happen to have any Razer Chroma RGB powered devices, the game will absolutely light up your world! We've been working alongside Razer to bring you Chroma compatibility in Mondrian - Plastic Reality. Whether you have a keyboard, mouse, headset, or even Philips Hue lightbulbs, your lights will match the current level's color scheme!

We're incredibly excited to have you here with us today and can't wait to see what you think! Please be sure to leave any Bug Reports on the Steam Forums rather than as a Steam review as we are much more likely to see it there.

So what are you doing? Hop to it! The Canvas is Waiting.

Hey everybody! We have set the demo to live, so if you'd like to check the game out, now's the time! Go download the demo and #makeAMondrian right meow.

Mondrian - Plastic Reality - lantanadan
Grab your brushes, and don't get dizzy, because we're taking you for a spin. Mondrian - Plastic Reality is a time-tripping, brickbreaking adventure through art history, our followup to 2015's Mondrian - Abstraction in Beauty, and we hope we can blow your expectations out of the cadmium yellow jar.

When we started Plastic Reality, we honestly thought we were just going to make an expansion pack for AiB. Three or four months into production we began to realize that what we had on our hands was a lot more than that. We had multiple playable characters who really changed the feel of the game; we had vastly improved graphics and new block shapes; and we had our first ever level editor with VERY easily shareable content. What we had was so much more than an expansion pack. It was honestly more than a sequel. It was a whole new beginning.

AiB was a turning point for us as a studio. We built something that, to this day, we're pretty proud of. But for a game about art to not include any way to CREATE art felt... disingenuous. We wanted to take the game above and beyond our own capabilities as a studio and stop playing it safe.

Our mission statement has always been to give students entering the game industry their first chance to build fun products, and with Mondrian - Plastic Reality, we had the unique opportunity to give them a game they could watch grow as they worked, rather than after. Our level designers could test their Mondrian Maker creations immediately and push the game to its limits (forcing us to completely reinvent our level file format halfway through production). Our animators could watch their characters and special effects come to life. Our artists could quickly export their works to be game-ready with the included Photoshop template. It's a game that's a truly dynamic product, one that grows the more we play it.

Now you have a chance to help grow this game too. For our first annual Summer Gala, we're celebrating our community by giving you Mondrian - Plastic Reality in full. The only limitations are what we haven't built in yet, and that it will disappear when the Steam Games Festival ends. Short of that, you have full access to the game, 100 levels, 5 playable characters, and the Mondrian Maker level editor, with its exclusive Testing and Gallery modes. We want this to be a big celebration of art and creativity! Even if you're more of a Player than a Creator, we're challenging you to check out Mondrian Maker and share one creation to Steam Workshop. Anything you build in the demo will be waiting for you at launch as well, so make sure to add the game to your Wishlist so you don't miss out!

Of course, this being a celebration of the community and YOUR works, make sure to follow our brand new Mondrian Makers Instagram where we'll be sharing daily Gallery Mode captures of our favorite Mondrian Maker creations.

Please leave any feedback you have in the game's Community as we'll be keeping a particularly close eye on it for these next few days! We hope you have an awesome Summer Festival and we can't wait to see what you create for the Gala.

Thank you for playing.
