Long time no talk! We’ve been busy cooking up new features for Mindshow Unleashed! Keep in mind, Unleashed is still a work in progress, so expect bugs and rough edges.

If you haven’t tried it already, you can get Mindshow Unleashed by right-clicking Mindshow in Steam, and select Properties > Betas > "mindshowunleashed". Your feedback on Discord is important to helping get this ready for prime time.

Learn how to use all the new features by watching our video tutorials here.

Download the latest Unity project here. You'll need Unity version 2019.1.0b4.

A few quick notes:
  • We’ve detached the Hand Menu from your controller to give your hands a little more freedom, so you’ll need to squeeze the controller grips to make it appear back on your hand.
  • You may notice some characters are missing from this release because we’re in the process of converting our assets to Unity 2019, although we did manage to add some sets back in!
  • To focus more on the higher fidelity asset import pipeline, we’ve removed support for Google Poly.
  • Saved shows and imported assets from the last Mindshow Unleashed will not be compatible with the latest version. You can re-convert assets in the Unity project and access the “prev” branch if you’d like to finish your exports.

New Features:
  • Import Mixamo animations.
  • Import audio.
  • Import Unity effects (e.g. fire, lightning, smoke, etc.).
  • Actor Modes. Change what you record when you hop in (e.g. just the body, audio only, etc.). Useful for layering performances with imported animation/audio.
  • Toy Modifiers change the behavior of certain toys (e.g. using audio to affect the Scale Toy).

Camera
  • Camera filters for the #InstaLyfe.
  • Camera waypoints (experimental) allow you to move the camera along a set path.
  • Camera smoothing is now visualized on the left controller.
  • Turn on the Camera View toggle on the desktop to see through the Camera’s POV when using the Camera.

Calibration Improvements
  • Faster Calibration. Hold out your arms in a T-Pose at any time to quickly re-calibrate.
  • New Microphone Calibration located on the Hand Menu.

New Toys:
  • Fly Toy - Make characters fly around (with more precision than the Force Toy). Best used with player scale!
  • Effect Toy - Apply effects (like fire) to character & props. Scale effects with the trackpad/joystick. Effects look weird in the headset, so use at your own risk!
  • Drive Toy - Make characters walk around remotely. Best used with player scale.
  • Clone Toy - Clone props/characters (and any animation associated with that character).
  • Slurp Toy - Copies the animations and audio associated with a character and adds it to the Slurp tab in your performance library.

Improvements:
  • Mindshow now opens instantly! Bye bye loading screens!
  • Updated Player Scale UI.
  • Removed Home Space. You can now load shows from your Hand Menu. Ch-ch-ch-changes!
  • Adjusted colliders so it is now easier to place characters/props close to each other.
  • Various updates to the Track UI menu.

(Re)added Assets:
  • Talk-X Stage.
  • Pearly Gates.
  • Middle of Nowhere.
  • Operating Room.
  • Winter Village.
  • Coworking Space.
  • Fridge

New Assets:
  • Added a light prop. The prop is invisible in exports! Unity has a limit of 3 dynamic lights per scene, so only 3 dynamic lights will be rendered at any given time.

Bug fixes:
  • Fixed a bunch of bugs related to save/load, the Camera, and Player Scaling.
  • Too many bug fixes to count.

Known Issues:
  • Export may trigger your Anti-Virus scanner and close Mindshow as a result. If you encounter this issue please add Mindshow as an exception to your AV scanner, or run Mindshow as an administrator.
  • Toys under the experimental tab are very much prototypes - expect funkiness.
  • Characters with Mixamo animations will fly back when they bump into things.
  • Shadows in Talk-X environment are too crunchy.
  • Clip sliding and looping in the Tracks tab is not yet functional.

Another update before the weekend? Yasssss!

Along with bug fixes and bringing back lots of characters and props, we’re giving you magical “Alice in Wonderland” powers to scale yourself up or down. Besides looking freaking awesome, becoming giant-size lets you nail establishing shots without hacks or workarounds.

If you haven’t tried it already, you can get Mindshow Unleashed by right-clicking Mindshow in Steam, and select Properties > Betas > "mindshowunleashed". As always, your feedback on Discord is super important to helping get this ready for prime time.

New Stuff
  • A significant amount of characters and props have been added back to the Hand Menu.
  • Added player scaling, height adjustment, & movement. (The "Up" and "Down" arrows move your position up and down, while the "Scale Up" and "Scale Down" arrows makes the world from your perspective bigger or smaller. UI is temporary.)
  • You can now rotate your teleport direction by twisting your wrist.
  • Adjust the smoothing of your camera movement with the analog stick/trackpad on the controller opposite to your Camera. There’s currently no UI for the smoothing, so you’ll have to wave your Camera around to see the results.
  • Track UI on the Hand Menu has been updated significantly, but these features are still a work in progress.
  • Save/load improvements.
  • Rotation control on Force Toy is more stable.
  • Feet should be more stable, and drag less.
  • Adjusted angle of wrists to be more accurate.

Import Changes

Bug Fixes
  • Google Poly works again. Phew!
  • You can now save longer shows without getting stuck on save, although very large show files may still have issues.
  • No more purple cylinder in the Homespace. Bye Felicia!
  • Recording one character performance over another will no longer play the previous character’s expressions from the previous performance.
  • Using Scale/Force on an object before the countdown now works.
  • Western town shadows and props have returned. Yippee!
  • Level boundaries now only appear when placing a character or teleporting.

Known Issues
  • Player scale is not reset when going home or calibrating. Make sure to reset before doing any of these actions or you might feel like an ant in the Homespace.
  • When scaled up, certain UI elements like your laserline may look a bit off.
  • We’re in the process of adjusting character joint weights – elbows are a bit funky as a result.
  • Only the lower half of Ragdoll UI will adjust the floppiness of a character
  • Attempting to ragdoll a character when paused will result in the character jumping back upright when releasing your trigger.
  • Low framerate can result in audio desync on playback and export.
  • Frame rate isn’t great on lower end machines.
  • Scale effects pop in certain scenarios.
  • Characters pop in certain scenarios.
  • Starting frame is not always accurate.

*THUD* - A new Mindshow update has appeared!
We’ve refreshed Mindshow Unleashed - the new experimental version of Mindshow - with big stability and UI improvements!

If you haven’t tried it already, you can get it by right-clicking Mindshow in Steam, and select Properties > Betas > "mindshowunleashed". As always, your feedback on Discord is super important to helping get this ready for prime time.

First thing you might notice: “Hey! Where’d are all the assets go, dude?” Yeah, the Hand Menu is a little barren right now. We’ve upgraded our underlying asset tech, which means characters, sets, and props need to be converted and made compatible with the new update. This will take some time, so we’ve temporarily removed some assets in order to get you a more stable build sooner!

New Stuff
  • Added a new and improved Camera Review State.
  • Added UI for Camera Zoom.
  • Moved the Record Toys button off the hand menu and onto the left controller to mirror the behavior of recording as a character.
  • Moved Track UI into the Hand Menu as a new tab. (The Tracks tab is a work in progress and doesn’t accurately reflect tracks attached to characters/props yet.)
  • New Focus Button icon - icons only appear above props/characters when the Tracks tab is selected.
  • Increased the length of the timeline UI to allow for more precision when scrubbing.
  • Timeline now resets when ejecting from a character, or reaching the end of your timeline.
  • Underlying asset tech has been overhauled to be more future proof. (We’re in the process of converting old assets to the new tech.)
  • Save/load has also been overhauled to be faster and more future proof.

Import Changes:
  • There’s a new import project in our Google Drive folder called “MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.3.zip”.
  • Please note: Imported characters that were created and saved in “MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.2” will not work in the new project, “MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.3”, because the script has changed from “CharacterProxy” to “ActorData”.
  • To fix this, you will have to run the “Fix My Characters Please” option located underneath the “Mindshow” menu in Unity. This will fix all prefabs in the Resources/Database folder.
  • Step 1: Copy old files from your Raw folder in MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.2 into MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.3.
  • Step 2: Copy old files from your Database folder in MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.2 into MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.3.
  • Step 3: Click “Fix My Characters Please” under the Mindshow Unity heading.
  • Step 4: Re-export your characters.
  • Alternatively, you can re-convert your characters through the traditional pipeline.
  • The Actor Data script now has a “Regenerate Preview” button.
  • The old import pathway (MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.2) has been deleted from the Mindshow Import Google Drive folder.
  • Imports created in MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.2 or earlier are not forward compatible and will not work in the new version of Mindshow Unleashed.
  • Imports created in MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.3 are not backwards compatible, and most likely do not work with the previous version of Mindshow Unleashed/the version available on the “prev” beta branch.

Meoples:
  • We’ve added a section to the Google Drive for “Meople” assets, which can be found here. These characters are meant to be “blank slate” characters you can customize! For example, you can draw new “sticker face” facial expressions, re-texture their clothing, or even accessorize them with a hat or sunglasses. You do not need to convert these characters. Simply update the prefab found in the Unity project under “Recourses\Database\Characters” and click “Regenerate Preview” on the root of the prefab.

Bug Fixes:
  • Grab has been overhauled, and should be much more reliable on playback.
  • Fixed multiple bugs which would result in characters freezing on playback.
  • Fixed a common scenario where grabbed objects stuck to a player’s hand.
  • Rift users can open/close their hands using the grips again.
  • Characters that have been ragdolled will no longer stand up unexpectedly.
  • Character fingers should no longer be jittery.
  • Toy recordings on a character/prop are no longer deleted when using that Toy outside of recording.
  • Playback of props which collide with one another should be more reliable/consistent.
  • Objects should now collide with other objects when scaled up.
  • Fixed multiple issues which would result in unreliable prop playback and freezing.
  • Audience Marker is now visible when loading a show.
  • Level boundaries should no longer appear in exports.
  • Adjusted Ragdoll UI to allow for more precision.

Known Issues
  • There’s a purple cylinder in the Homespace. Lol?
  • Saving a show with too much data (about 90 seconds of recorded character performance) will fail and leave the user stuck saving.
  • Cannot import Google Poly objects.
  • Recording one actor performance over another will play the actor’s expressions from the previous performance if no new expressions are added.
  • Using Scale/Force on an object before the countdown finishes will cause issues.
  • Attempting to ragdoll a character when paused will result in the character jumping back upright when releasing your trigger.
  • Western town lacks shadows, and its normal environmental props.
  • Low framerate can result in audio desync on playback and export.
  • Frame rate isn’t great on lower end machines.
  • Scale effects pop in certain scenarios.

TLDR: Hey guys! We've been working on a new experimental version of Mindshow called "Mindshow Unleashed". We've made improvements since the soft launch at the end of December, and we need your feedback (on Discord) to help make it better! Keep in mind it's still very much a work in progress.

Get it now by right clicking on Mindshow in Steam, select Properties > Betas > "mindshowunleashed".

Still here? Buckle up - here's the latest updates.

PLEASE NOTE: Saved shows made with the previous version of Mindshow Unleashed will not be compatible with this update. This will hold true for future releases as well. With each update of Mindshow Unleashed, please expect that saved shows made with the previous will not be compatible with the new version. #betaLife

If you’d like to access shows you made in the previous version of Mindshow Unleashed, you can sync the “prev” branch in Steam.

How to access the “prev” branch:
  • Right click on Mindshow in Steam (in your library/the Games list on the left)
  • Select “Properties” from the contextual menu
  • Then click the “BETAS” tab on the properties menu window.
  • Where it says “Enter beta access code to unlock private betas” type in:
  • iwouldliketousethepreviousbuild
  • CLICK the “CHECK CODE” button.
If you press Enter/the return key the code will not be entered. You must click the CHECK CODE button
  • You will now have access to the “prev” branch and will be able to use the previous version of Mindshow Unleashed. Select “prev” from the dropdown menu where it says “Select the beta you would like to opt into.”
  • You may need to close and reopen the Steam client in order to force it to update the version of Mindshow you have on disk to the version you have selected.
  • If you get stuck, please post in the #mindshow-unleashed channel on Discord

New Stuff:
  • Added more UI to Place, Force, Ragdoll, and Delete toys.
  • Added haptics to Place, Scale, Ragdoll, and Delete toys.
  • Added a fancy "poof" effect when an object is deleted. Poof!
  • Fancified the effect when switching tools.
  • Video export should be ever so slightly faster.
  • Track UI is now attached to the hand menu.
  • Added placeholder for Freeze Toy (Freeze Toy functionality remains disabled for now).

Import Changes:
  • We’ve released an updated Import tool, as well as updated instructions on how to utilize its new features. The tool and guide are available upon request in our Discord server
  • Added support for converting prefabs in the Raw folder.
  • Added support for characters with no neck bone.
  • Added talking support for characters with a jaw bone (defined in Unity's Humanoid animation type).
  • Fixed an issue with rigs that have foot joints whose orientation angles down the joint (common with Mixamo rigs) causing feet to float off the ground.
  • Added more settings to the CharacterProxy script.
  • Changed the "Convert Assets" window's Asset Type default to "Character" and default "height" to 1.8.
  • Added the Face Pose Editor to Mindshow>Characters.
  • Made the lighting and environment in “SetupScene” purdier.
  • Please Note: Imported Characters that were created and saved in MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.1 should still work in the new project, MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.2.
  • The old import pathway (MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.1) has been deleted from the Mindshow Import Google Drive folder.
  • Imports created in MindshowImport_UnityProject_0.2 are not backwards compatible, and most likely do not work with the previous version of Mindshow Unleashed/the version available on “prev” beta branch.

New Camera Stuff:
  • Camera is now a "two handed" toy. Your hand menu will be hidden when you pull out the Camera. (After filming your scene you will need to swap to another toy to bring back your hand menu, and then export.)
  • Left controller can now be used to cycle between zoom values. Pull the left trigger to punch in, and squeeze the left grip to punch out.
  • Added Camera lock functionality back in - squeeze the grips to lock your Camera in place.
  • Adjusted Zoom on trackpad/joystick to avoid accidental "pops" in zoom.
  • We're in the process of adding back a new and improved Camera Review window (the window that previously allowed users to preview an export’s camera movements before saving the camera path and exporting it). Stay tuned!

Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed an issue which resulted in characters locking up after multiple recordings.
  • Less finger wiggle.
  • Improved finger behavior when grabbing props.
  • Reduced unexpected wrist twist, but we are fixing some isolated cases.
  • Feet are more stable.
  • Character hands should now collide with stomachs, instead of clipping through.
  • Objects within grabbing range will now highlight blue.
  • Fixed an error when clearing a show with the Camera Toy selected.
  • Fixed a scenario which would result in your head being detached from a character.
  • Character clavicles now playback properly.
  • Facial expressions should no longer pop when recording twice in a character.
  • Fixed an issue which would allow you to Hop In to a character while filming.
  • Selfie cam now toggles on and off at the appropriate times.
  • Teleporting up vertical surfaces has been disabled. Our apologies, Kurt Wagner.
  • Fixed an issue which resulted in objects staying highlighted.

Known Bugs:
  • Performance needs improvement-- you may experience dropped frames.
  • Exporting video when your performance drops can result in audio/video desync.
  • Load time are significantly longer, we are working on optimizing save/load.
  • Some shows fail to load.
  • Grabbed props will often stick to your hands; squeezing the triggers again should release the prop.
  • Using a Toy outside of recording on an object will clear any recordings of that toy type attached to the object. For example, using Force outside of recording on a character with a Force recording will remove that Force performance.
  • Force, Ragdoll, and Scale are undergoing big changes and are very unstable in their current state. Playback likely won’t be reliable.

Woah - you made it to the end! If you try it out, please give your feedback in the #mindshow-unleashed channel on Discord.
