Hunt: Showdown 1896

Crytek, developers of Hunt: Showdown and the Crysis series, have announced that "the company has adopted a remote work option for employees who prefer it." The decision comes after the studio initially switched to work-from-home during the Covid-19 pandemic and found that development didn't slow down, and follows a similar decision made by Destiny developer Bungie last month.

If you wish to hunt monsters in the swamp without being hunted by other players, good news: Hunt: Showdown has launched a singleplayer PvE mode, Trials. This brings a set of challenges to the two maps in Crytek’s monster-hunting FPS, letting your hone skills in sniper trials, parkour trials, and wave survival trials, or just explore the levels without getting murdered. They are very nice levels. Newness has come for multiplayer hunters too, with the new dual wielding feature letting you sling two guns at once.

There s a lot to be frightened by in Hunt: Showdown. Bee ladies, dying horses, a scuttering spider-beast. Slavering hounds, alarms made of clattering hanging bones, zombies. Ducks>. It s like this whole bayou hates you.

But the swamp and its horrible denizens aren t Hunt: Showdown s antagonists. The real source of tension is other players. Every detail of this shooter s design is about engineering a sense of threat from the fact that running around this grimdank hellhole are other people who are aiming to end your bog holiday early. In Playstyle Royale, I normally head into a battle royale game and try to win my chicken dinner while adhering to arbitrary rules. This time I’m playing Hunt: Showdown, which is merely like> a battle royale game, and the whole point of today’s exercise is to prevent> needless animal death. If only more people knew about the vital role demonic spiders play in our ecosystem, I’d have to shoot fewer of them.

People. I mean I’d have to shoot fewer people.

Hunt: Showdown drips atmosphere like a spider emerging from a hot bath. One foray at a time, you push your way through un-life and undergrowth, seeking your quarry’s hideout. Except it’s not just yours. The real monsters are the ones with keyboards and shotguns, and they’re gunning for the same arachnid.

Weird Western (yes, I know it’s set in the swampy deep south, it’s a genre descriptor) competitive monster-slaying FPS Hunt: Showdown launches in full on August 27th. While I didn’t get to play it as much as I wanted to during its recent free trial, I’ve acquired a taste for Crytek’s grim blend of duos battle royale and tense horror-themed shooter. There’s a big nasty demon out there, guarded by undead cultists, and only one team of occult cowboys/girls can claim the bounty. Below, a new trailer showing off some the lady hunter characters Crytek are adding in version 1.0.
