Hollow Knight

Materia Collective, the video game music publisher behind the Undertale Piano Collections, has partnered with Team Cherry to create the Hollow Knight Piano Collections, an album featuring 15 of the game's iconic soundtracks.

Music created by Hollow Knight's composer Christopher Larkin has been rearranged by David Peacock, who has worked previously work with renowned game composers Austin Wintory and Gareth Coker. The tracks are performed by Augustine Mayuga Gonzales, who has worked on albums for Undertale, Stardew Valley and Hyper Light Drifter.

Tracks include themes for Dirtmouth, the City of Tears, Hornet, the Forgotten Crossroads and more - here's a preview for one of my personal favourites, Greenpath:

It's EGX 2019 weekend! Over the next few days we'll be bringing you quickfire impressions of some of the highlights from the show floor here at London's ExCel centre. You'll find them all here - and if there's anything out there you want to bring to our attention let us know!

We've known about Hollow Knight's upcoming sequel, Silksong, since the beginning of this year, when Team Cherry announced what was originally designed to be an expansion for the base game was just too big, and so would be made into a standalone title. We haven't had much info on it since. No wonder then the queue I had to stand in to get my hands on the demo at EGX was so long (and there was also only one console with the demo available! Criminal considering how brilliant it is).

The demo is only short, but even that amount of time was enough to understand why Silksong is being made into a standalone game. The first playable zone I landed in seemed like the very first level, allowing me to play Hornet with her base abilities as she traversed through Moss Grotto. It's an area reminiscent of Greenpath - and I say reminiscent purely due to the overgrown natural feel of it. It's enough to remind the player this is indeed a Hollow Knight game, but brings its own unique atmosphere at the same time.

Video game lore nerds love a good fake language. Dragon Age has its own version of Elven, The Legend of Zelda has various Hylian dialects, even Ratchet and Clank had its very own Lombax alphabet (which, if I recall correctly, is creatively named 'Lombaxian').

Hollow Knight is no exception; there's certainly a language in the game, though it isn't obvious, because it all sounds like absolute gibberish. From Iselda's wistful sighs of "bafanada", to Hornet's battle cries of "adino!", these are just noises to fill the quiet air of the Hallownest and give life to the various bugs we meet.

These seemingly random sounds are well-designed, characterful expressions which help to provide the player with an idea of each characters' personality. The Dung Defender and his proud guffaws tell us he was a bold and eccentric knight, whereas the Seer's odd chanting paints her as a spiritual figure, if not a bit of a bizarre one.

Hollow Knight

If you've been patiently holding out for a Hollow Knight physical release, today's your special day. Team Cherry's gorgeous bug-themed Metroidvania will shortly receive a fancy Collector's Edition (and slightly less fancy standard edition) on Switch, PS4, and PC.

For a while, following the collapse of Team Cherry's partnership with Skybound Games, a Hollow Knight physical release looked uncertain. However, the developer assured fans at the time that it would "investigate other ways to deliver physical versions of Hollow Knight", and those investigations have finally borne fruit, in conjunction with Fangamer.

Should you choose Fangamer's standard edition of Hollow Knight, you'll get the game and all DLC (on cartridge, disc, or DRM-free disc with Steam Key, depending on your platform of choice) in a good old-fashioned box that fits snuggly upon your shelf. That version costs $29 USD on PC and PS4 (around 22) and $34 USD on Switch (around 26).

Who saw this coming? Team Cherry has unveiled its latest project, which turns out to be a full sequel to popular Metroidvania Hollow Knight.

According to developer Team Cherry's blog post, Hollow Knight: Silksong follows the adventures of Hornet as she journeys through "a whole new kingdom haunted by silk and song".

"Captured and brought to an unfamiliar land, Hornet must battle foes and solve mysteries as she ascends on a deadly pilgrimage to the kingdom's peak."

After finding plenty of fans on Nintendo Switch and PC, Hollow Knight has now secured a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release date. It's coming soon, too - on 25th September.

The well-received indie Metroidvania adventure arrives on PS4 and Xbox One in its Voidheart Edition, with all four of the game's additional content packs built in.

A PlayStation Store blog post has promised a 20 per cent pre-order discount, too.

Hollow Knight

Team Cherry, maker of insect-riddled indie Hollow Knight, has today revealed the release date for the fourth and final free content pack for the game.

In a blog post on Team Cherry's website, the developer announced the new DLC will be launched on the 23rd of August. The release will be available for all players, on both the Switch and PC. Excitingly, the studio confirmed this DLC will also be "the largest one yet."

So, what can players expect from this content pack? Similar to its predecessors such as Grimm Troupe, Gods & Glory will bring "a whole bunch of new bosses," "a slew of new music," "new NPCs" and "new quests." Back when Gods & Glory was originally announced in January, Team Cherry mentioned one of these new characters would be The Godseeker: a "disturbing yet alluring being" that will expand the player's romance options (ooh la la). The DLC will also introduce a third game mode, one that has apparently been "long requested" by fans.

Hollow Knight

There are no training wheels in this kingdom.

Buried deep within this insect infested land, each playthrough of Hollow Knight feels and moves a little differently. There are no waypoints or story missions - there's not even a right or wrong way to play, really. Developer Team Cherry doesn't care where you go, or how you get there. Even how much of the story you see is up to you.

This lack of direction is overwhelming at first. Even though I'm the kind of player that naturally double-backs on where I think any given game wants me to go - someone who instinctively scours for secrets - the dozens of pathways and possibilities trouble me. As I wander through Hollow Knight's early hours it becomes more troubling still, and I start to worry that I may miss huge swaths of lore and collectibles - even whole areas, maybe? - if I'm not thorough enough. But as I adapt to the natural ebb and flow of Hollow Knight's rhythm and concentrate instead on what lies ahead, that anxiety melts away.
