Hard Reset Extended Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Before reviving 3DR Realms’s Shadow Warrior, developers Flying Wild Hog made their very own ’90s-style FPS, Hard Reset. As well as working on Shadow Warrior 2, Flying Wild Hog have been polishing up Hard Reset for a new release as Hard Reset Redux [official site], and now it has a release date of June 3rd. This announcement also brings a 16-minute gameplay trailer, and shows some Redux changes are pleasingly Shadow Warrior-y. A cybersword and a dash move? Oh, go on then! Have a look:

Shadow Warrior 2 looks pretty dang swish, doesn’t it? I’ve been pretty surprised by, and pleased with, how nicely Polish studio Flying Wild Hog’s revive-o-rebooting of 3D Realms’ vintage FPS has gone well. Now they’re also returning to their own older work.

Hard Reset Redux is coming, a revamp of the throwback FPS they released in 2011. It doesn’t sound massively different, with fancied-up graphics and new enemies and a sword and things, but hey, I know Hard Reset found a fair few fans.

This logo contains an actual dragon made out of blood. Take that, Far Cry 3.

In a post-re-Rise-of-the-Triad world, any franchise reboot is possible. Case in point: Shadow Warrior. The original was a ninja-themed first-person shooter sliced and diced from Duke Nukem 3D‘s cloth – Build engine, unrepentantly offensive humor, and all – but it didn’t exactly have legions of lovers banging down doors for its long-overdue return. At least, not that I’m aware of. Maybe I should’ve looked in more shadows. Regardless, it’s coming back, and Hard Reset developer Flying Wild Hog’s hefting the weighty, blood-rusted katana of responsibility.

Every videogame would be one level shorter if train stations had never been invented. FACT

I’d be lying if I said the art of Hard Reset was the most striking thing about it – I’d be more inclined to go with ‘shooting lots and lots of robots with nice lighting effects.’ Nonetheless, it’s jolly nice of devs Flying Wild Hog to offer up a free, 137MB PDF artbook, whose 46 heavily-illustrated pages contain concept art, environments, characters and all sorts. There’s some dramatic stuff there, suggesting a distinctive world made of bits of City 17, Blade Runner and Rapture. Assorted download links below, and if you haven’t played the game yet (it evoked mixed but just about positive feelings around these parts, though I’m not sure we’ve tried the extended edition/ Exile DLC yet) it’s currently 75% offski for the complete package on Steam. In other news, Windows 8′s built-in PDF reader is just the worst thing, so definitely don’t open the artbook in that. (more…)

Welcome to the jungle. Or, er, what's left of it, anyway.

Well, this sort of came out of nowhere – not that I’m complaining, mind you. After already waving its magically miserly wand and poofing our dusty old copies of Hard Reset into shiny Extended Editions for free, Flying Wild Hog’s seen fit to hand out yet another freebie. [Edit: It's actually the Extended Edition's content, but released as free DLC on Steam. Throw rotten vegetables at me, for I have been a fool.] Titled “Exile,” it’s available now and sends Major Fletcher into “the Barrens – dangerous lands beyond the last human city of Bezoar, where our hero will meet new foes and make new friends.” Friendship always was my favorite part of Hard Reset.

Indie Royale’s St Patrick’s Day Bundle includes the “old school” FPS Hard Reset, the awesome abstract 3D action puzzle game Vertex Dispenser, as well as Jolly Rover and DLC Quest. The current average is £3.19, with just over four days left. Paying over the average also bags you this Nintendo-inspired soundtrack.

I'm just looking for the 7-11!Pretty-lookin’ cyberpunk robo-blaster Hard Reset – which John was amused but disappointed by – has received a big old patch, 1.2, which adds a Survival mode which “unleashes wave after wave of robotic hell upon the player, who has make good use of weapon upgrades to delay the inevitable as long as possible.” The mode is based in two new maps, and has a leaderboard setup so that Hard Reset adherents can fight their way to an obscure kind of fame with their survival skills.

The patch also “adds full NVIDIA 3D Vision and Surround support, as well as support for multiple displays.” So that’s fancy. The patch should automagic via Steam.
