Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

Drinkbox’s Guacamelee was one of the most enthusiastically fun metroidvanias released in recent years. Its bright and distinct world of Mexican mythology, Lucha Libre wrestling and terrible puns (plus tired memes, but we’ll just gloss over that) were a joy to bounce, dropkick and people’s elbow through. As such, it’s no surprise I’m entirely on board for its sequel, Guacamelee! 2, now due out on August 21st. We’ve even got an updated trailer for you below, full of suplexed skellingtons, mariachi melodies and cartoon chickens.

This is… odd. Guacamelee! 2 has been announced for PC/Steam at PAX. But also, this game was announced for PC last year? So it was unannounced and re-announced, and along the way it became a PlayStation 4 exclusive. And now it isn’t. Guys, we’re trying to run a news website here and you’re making my life a living hell. Stop Press-lighting me. To sum up: the game is absolutely coming to PC now (and probably other platforms) but it looks great and honestly I just would rather be playing it than talking about when and where I might be playing it in the future.

The Metroidvania is perhaps one of the more tricky genres to nail down. With its very name coming from an amalgamation of two actually quite different Nintendo-based game series – Metroid and Castlevania – quite what qualifies is always up for debate. Hence, we suspect this could be one of the more controversial lists, when it leaves out a favourite game that someone else might argue fits the remit, but we decided did not. The important thing to remember is that we re right. And all of these games are brilliant.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Rowdy luchadors will return for more metroidvania action with Guacamelee! 2 next year, developers DrinkBox Studios have announced. Bad things are happening again, so we’ll need to fight them again. This is good news, as our John declared the first game “a cut above the rest, a shining example of the form” as a Metroidvania – but a game blighted by bad boss battles. That was then and this is now. Have a peek at Guacamelee! 2 in today’s announcement trailer: (more…)

Guacamelee! Gold Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Punch!

When punchy platformer Guacamelee! arrived on PC, it came as a shiny Gold Edition packing DLC from the original console release. But then developers DrinkBox fancied it up again with fancy new things for those fancier new consoles as the Super Turbo Championship Edition, meaning we were stuck with just a plain old really fun game. Ugh! Who wants that! But good news, parity-seekers. This Thursday, the Super and Turboness are coming to PC via Steam. It’ll be a standalone release rather than an upgrade, though DrinkBox will cut $10 off for folks who own the Gold Edition.
