Gears of Eden - Gears of Eden
A sentient rover lost and alone on an abandoned mining asteroid colony searches for answers to questions like, “Why the heck am I even ALIVE?!” This is the stage setting for Gears of Eden, the space robot survival game from indie startup, Cubit Games, just freshly launched on {LINK REMOVED}.

Fans of survival games, listen up! While new to Kickstarter, GoE has been in development for over five years and has a free Alpha demo on Steam with the core mechanics of exploration, survival, crafting, building, combat, and lore discovery all in place - creating enough content for several hours of gameplay. It plays a bit like a more chill Valheim, with sentient robots in place of vikings, battery management in place of food and stamina, and a fully 3D spherical asteroid environment (think Mario Galaxy, but less cartoony and much bigger) in place of mountains, plains, and swamps. It’s also been accurately described as WALL-E meets No Man’s Sky.

A focus on narrative really helps Gears of Eden stand out as a survival game. As you rumble across the rocky asteroid surface looking for ore deposits to mine, little clues begin to emerge. You aren’t the only sentient machine out there! In fact, these machines have been “waking up” for hundreds of years and forming their own civilization. Oh, and humans aren’t really around any more - in this distant future, they are remembered only in myth and legend - although some robots believe them to be responsible for their sentience, while others attribute the gift of life to an all-powerful machine god that will one day return.

The truth is out there. Somewhere. Ready for you to discover as you upgrade your parts and explore further out into the more treacherous territories of the bug-infested spacer rock. Yes. I did say bug-infested! You’ll need to figure out how to combat some nasty space critters along the way, but eventually you will be able to escape the cursed asteroid you wake up on. Or, at least, that’s the premise Cubit has planned for Gears of Eden.

Gears of Eden will be available on Kickstarter until March 17th, and includes reward ranging from $10 for access to the full release, to $750 for a hand-painted 3D printed robot - with lots of levels in between. If you’re a fan of survival games and sci-fi narratives, this is one to keep an eye on!

Here are just a few of the rewards:

Gears of Eden - Gears of Eden

Gearing Up!

Hey, everybody! I hope you are all doing as well as possible during the ongoing difficult times of this pandemic. As you may know, due to the Covid crisis and some personal tragedies, we had to make some delays with our plans for Gears of Eden, including delaying the Kickstarter which we had prepped to launch back in 2020.

Today, however, we are incredibly happy to announce… a whole lot, actually! First up, we are officially launching Alpha 2.7. We’ll talk about this more below, but the short version: If you haven’t tried Gears of Eden yet, this is the best time to try it. Truly, there are no words for how proud of this we are. Be sure to update your client to the latest version via Steam and read the Quick Start Tips on our alpha info page for helpful early-game advice!

We also want to announce the next big step for our little team. On February 15th we will be launching the Kickstarter campaign for Gears of Eden (register now on our official Kickstarter page)! This is an exciting and big step for us, and for the future of the project - and one which won't succeed without YOUR help! See the Kickstarter section below for more information on how you can help us reach our goals and ensure a bright future for the robot civilization.

A brand new way to mine in Alpha 2.7!
Alpha 2.7 introduces a brand new interactive mining mode! You will now tunnel through a laser grid of astro-dirt chunk by chunk as you dig up precious resources. Future releases will see this new mining mode expanded with upgrades that allow you to find resources more quickly, dig faster, and automate some of the processes of resource collection. We feel this new mining mini-game brings a more hands-on feel to mining and makes resource collection much more enjoyable. Try it out today and let us know what you think!

We are also introducing a new lore item series in this game related to the M-Zecksis bugs releases in Alpha 2.6, along with a new mission quest series!

This update also brings some much needed refinement to the menu systems - allow you to navigate to and from sub menus more easily, and apply repair kits more selectively. In addition, we've added some quality of life improvements, like the new tilt-o-meter that helps you understand your gravitational inclination, along with a lot of tweaks and bug-fixes! For a full list of updates, please see our Alpha 2.7 changelog!

Help us Kick Start this machine!
Way back in January of 2020, we had our Kickstarter all set up and ready to go. Unfortunately, a family loss and then the unrelenting pandemic made us scramble our plans and put everything on hold. We slowed things down in 2020, but we didn't stop. We released what was going to be our first Kickstarter stretch goal into the game in 2020 - the arrival of the M-Zecksis bugs, our first enemy NPCs! In 2021, we've released another update with additional features, and heading into 2022 now, we're finally going back to the Kickstarter and making a go at it!

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT FOR THIS TO WORK! If you want to be a part of this journey with us, go to our new Kickstarter page and register for the pre-launch. This tells us how we’re doing, it tells the fine folks at Kickstarter that you’re really interested, AND it will let you know the very moment the campaign goes live on February 15th. PS - That hand-painted 3D printed rover model above is one of our limited backer rewards!

HELP US spread the word! We are going to have lots of fun events, prizes, giveaways, and more over the next few weeks. So be sure to follow us on social media (the links are at the bottom of this email) and help us spread the word by sharing our posts and Kickstarter page!

And, as always, we love to hang out with all of you on Discord! We’ve got weekly game groups, an active community, and even a meme channel! Don’t you want to see all our memes??

Thank you!

This is an exciting (and maybe a little scary) time for us, and we're super proud to have your support in this journey. We're looking forward to sharing more of our future plans with you in our next update! Be sure to keep an eye on social media for some teases of some of our Kickstarter rewards!

Thank you so much, once again!
Until next time, please stay healthy and safe, and please keep in touch!

Gears of Eden - Gears of Eden

Hey hey, is this thing on? We here at Gears of Eden are happy to announce... the Alpha 2.6 Release! This is the result of a lot of hard work during a troubling time for a lot of people, ourselves included. A major goal for us in 2020 was going to include a Kickstarter campaign in March, but we didn't feel right asking people for money when the world was undergoing so much change. Instead, we decided to dive back into development and start tackling some of the updates for Gears that were meant to be stretch-goals.

With alpha 2.6, you are seeing the first of such updates. In this release, we've added enemy units and combat mechanics to the game for the first time ever! You can fight energy-thirsty space crabs (actually bio-engineered mutants known as M-Zecksis) to the death! Then collect their carcasses to extract oil, or raid their nests to find hidden stashes of pure diamonds! Alpha 2.6 also brings new collectible items, new crafting items, and improved controller support for those of you who prefer playing with a gamepad!

Even better, we are making Alpha 2.6 a free-to-play open release. Future releases will revert to backer-only access, but we felt like this was a good time to give everyone a break and hopefully allow them to have fun in our small little spacebot game. You can see more details in our changelog, and update your client to 2.6 via Steam. Be sure to read the updated Quick Start Tips on our alpha info page for helpful early-game advice!

More Crafting is HERE!

Alpha 2.6 introduces three new materials to the game: M-Zecksis carcasses, diamonds, and oil!

The carcasses are available to collect when you defeat an M-Zecksis soldier - these nasty critters are bio-engineered (by something? someone? somewhere? - find the answers as the story unfolds) to have the ability to survive on pure energy, but they are also sensitive to certain ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum! (Which you can use to your advantage!)

The M-Zecksis also hoard diamonds in their nests! They are persistent little enemies though, so think about upgrading some of your components before venturing off after those riches!

Oil can be found in the environment around areas of industrial remnants, or crafted from those disgusting M-Zecksis carcasses you picked up! All of these new materials are used in current crafting recipes at the Sinter Forge, and will also be used in some new craftable tools coming in 2.7!

Improved Gamepad Support!

In Alpha 2.6, we've improved game-pad controller support. Previously, you were able to control your character with a game-pad, but you couldn't interact with the in-game inventory and crafting menus, or the system menus. All menus systems now work, although you'll still need to use your keyboard for text input fields. Look for additional controller support in future updates!

The Future of Gears of Eden

We are already hard at work on Alpha 2.7, which is going to bring some new mining mechanics to the world of GoE that we're really excited about! We will also continue to gauge the pulse of the community and try to find the right time to launch our delayed Kickstarter. That could even happen within the next few weeks, depending on how things look! But, in the meantime, the true lifeblood of Gears of Eden will always be our terrific, supportive, and incredibly patient community.

If you would like to support us, our creative director, Ben Sledge, has put together a small list of things you can do, most of which don't cost a nickel!

  • Join and be active in our Discord. You have no idea how much just showing up and chatting motivates and encourages us.
  • Likewise, follow us on Twitch and come chat with us during our live gamedev or gameplay streams. If you have Amazon Prime, you get a free Twitch Prime subscription each month, and you can use that to support us on Twitch.
  • Share our social media posts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Sharing is caring!
  • Help connect us to streamer friends who want might want to play Gears of Eden.

It has never been more exciting to be a part of the Gears of Eden development team. We’d like to thank each and every single one of you for sticking with us through this journey. We’re immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished here and we cannot wait for you to check it out.

Thank you so much, once again!

Until next time, please stay healthy and safe, and please keep in touch!

Gears of Eden - Gears of Eden

It's been a couple months since our last update, but we've been hard at work! Our new Alpha 2.1.2 features a brand new goal system! In this early implementation, it is meant to help new players take their first steps in the game. The current goals will walk you through the core mechanics of mining, crafting and forging. However, we also intend to use this feature for missions you pick up during your space-bot adventures from objects, locations, and NPCs! So, we'd love to get your feedback on this early implementation as we prepare for future content!

You can update your client to 2.1.2 via Steamitchio, or Gamejolt. Be sure to read the updated Quick Start Tips on our alpha info page for helpful early-game advice!

We know this isn't a fully functioning game yet. We trust you do as well. We are releasing our Alpha stages for free because we need a community behind us to continue and make the game we want to make - with you! Game development takes a lot of time, dedication and money. We plan to launch a crowd funding campaign in the near future, and we will need your help to spread the word! We just can't keep making the game without any funding indefinitely. In the meantime, we value and are listening to your feedback!

Here are some other changes in this update:

More power!

We are still trying to get the balance of time sinks, power, and movement right. (Incidentally, this is one of the most important pieces of feedback you can give!) For this update, we've made motors and wheel more powerful, and increased their durability (along with the durability of drills). We've also increased the power contained in fuel cells. In addition, we have significantly lowered the costs of placeable power/navigation beacons. Another  big change related to power.... we've made batteries and cargo holds apply as upgrades rather than as swappable parts. This means that when you apply a battery, you no longer receive the old one back.

More space!

We are working on a recycling center that will allow you to transform old parts into resources, so look for that in a coming update! For now, we're attempting to alleviate storage issues by increasing the amount of storage in the Forge Hopper, Storage Chest, and all interactive items in the game.

... And more!

Alpha 2.1.2 also includes a number of smaller updates and numerous interface and typo fixes. For a full list of updates on 2.1.2 and other Alpha 2 patches, please visit our changelog.

We want YOU!
We can't do this without a community. If you want to see Gears of Eden continue, here are 5 things you can do to help:
  • Join and be active in our Discord. You have no idea how much just showing up and chatting motivates and encourages us.
  • Likewise, follow us on Twitch and come chat with us during our live gamedev or gameplay streams. If you have Amazon Prime, you get a free Twitch Prime subscription each month, and you can use that to support us on Twitch.
  • Share our social media posts on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. Sharing is caring!
  • Help connect us to streamer friends who want might want to play Gears of Eden.
  • Support GoE through a donation or recurring Twitch subscription.
Gears of Eden - Gears of Eden

Less than a month after launching Alpha 2, we are back with a big content update, Alpha 2.1! This is actually the fifth and largest patch since Gears of Eden Alpha 2 released, and is the first required update - which means you will need to update your client to continue playing the game. You can update your client to 2.1 via Steam. Be sure to read the updated Quick Start Tips on our alpha info page for helpful early-game advice!

No more getting lost!
The big step forward Alpha 2.1 makes is the introduction of our first craftable object that you can place in the world: charging beacons. Not only do these beacons represent the foundation of our base-building system, they will also help you explore the asteroid more strategically and safely. Beacons will provide you with energy AND also register as blips on your antenna radar (Q  key). The radar itself has also been improved, and will now help you better navigate the environment. This means you will be able to build a network of beacons to help you safely traverse the asteroid and find your way back home!Fair warning: The pre-existing energy beacons have been removed from the asteroid except for one near your base. These were initially placed in as a hand-holding temporary measure to help make it easier for you to explore the asteroid. Now that you can craft and place your own beacons, we've removed these safety nets. Tread carefully!

No more spinning!
We've remapped all keyboard, mouse and controller inputs in Gears of Eden through a new asset called Rewired. This adds better controller support, and should eliminate the spinning camera bug many users reported when playing the game with a gamepad or joystick plugged in! You can now use a gamepad to control all rover functions in the game as well as camera movement. We don't yet have controller support added for menu and inventory interaction, but we are working hard to bring full controller support to the game soon!Keybind mapping! One of the advantages of this new Rewired input asset, is that it comes with its own key mapping tool. You can toggle access to the key mapper by pressing F4. Please be aware, we haven't customized the names of all keybind descriptions yet, and the interface for this is the default Rewired interface. It is best used when you are in the game playing, and not from the main menu.

... And More!
Alpha 2.1 also includes a number of smaller updates, like increased durability to wheels and motors, increased effectiveness of repair kits, and numerous interface and typo fixes. For a full list of updates on 2.1 and other Alpha 2 patches, please visit our changelog.

We want YOU!
To our backers and supporters, THANK YOU SO MUCH! We realize we are behind on sending out rewards due to focusing on PAX and our Alpha 2 release, but we will be trying to catch up on those soon! It's no secret that developing a game like Gears of Eden is costly. It takes a lot of time, a lot of hard work, a lot of late nights, and a lot of resources to make it happen.

Thank You!
It has never been more exciting to be a part of the GEARS OF EDEN development team. We’d like to thank each and every single one of you for sticking with us through this journey. We’re immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished here and we cannot wait for you to check it out.
Gears of Eden - Gears of Eden
It's been a long time coming, but we're excited to finally be able to say... GEARS OF EDEN Alpha 2 is here!!!

We’ve been working very hard for the past year to achieve this milestone! As always, we maintain our usual disclaimer: this isn’t yet Early Access; this isn’t even a demo! This is an Alpha - which means everything you see is in development and may be replaced at some point down the road. It's really a proof of concept more than anything else at this stage, but we still hope you enjoy it!

We are extremely excited to share this release with you. Alpha 2 is the product of our blood, sweat, and tears and we simply cannot wait to see what you think. Please be aware, you will need an Alpha Key to play Gears of Eden - Alpha 2. You can get your free key on our website! In addition to the key, you need the alpha demo client, which you can download here on Steam! If you have any questions at all, feel free to stop by our Discord and let us know. We're happy to help!

If you played our first alpha release, you might be wondering what new stuff we’ve got in store for you. Well, we don’t have time to get into all of it here, but let me give you a quick rundown. With this latest release, we’ve added: a Persistence system so you can get right back where you left off! We’ve also done a full overhaul on the UI system, fleshed out the crafting system, put in some cool Twitch integration for you streamers out there, and gave you some tools to make your time a little more comfortable. Oh, and did I mention that we have filled the asteroid with sights to see, hazards to brave, puzzles to solve and some hints at the full game’s story that we’re very excited for you to check out! And best of all? That’s not even everything! For full details, check out the changelog.

All on its own, this release has been a huge milestone for us, but there's something else just as big. For the first time in Gears of Eden's development, we exhibited at a convention! And not just any convention: WE WENT TO PAX EAST!!! This convention was a surreal, amazing experience for us. We went with zero expectations, but hundreds of people swarmed Gears of Eden, playing it, asking questions, hanging out, and really, just overwhelming us with a tidal wave of kindness and support. To go from feeling like your game is a dream that you toil away at night into... all of that? It's amazing. If you were there PAX and stopped by, know that you made our entire weekend. Just, I might add, as much as everyone who has been supporting us for these past two years.

Thank you all so, so much. Never have we felt so energized and confident in our game. We could keep going with these thanks, but instead we'll end it here. Please do give our game a shot and let us know what you think. Every bit of feedback we can get right now will help us moving forward to make Gears of Eden the best game we possibly can!

Hey Streamers! If you are on Twitch, we'd love to partner with you! Gears of Eden features 4 chat commands that your audience can use to effect you in the game: zap, turbo, luck and solar flare! Let us know if you're interested in streaming Gears of Eden - we'd love to send some audience your way!
Gears of Eden - Gears of Eden

Alright, humans. We've been super busy here at GoE HQ, and I'm excited to share some of our latest updates with you this week! I'm titling this post "The Next Level", because, as we sit here on the precipice of our free Alpha 2 release, there are so many things we are doing to make significant strides forward with our little space robot game. Let's start with some of the in-game updates and branch out from there!

I'm very happy to announce that, for the first time ever, Gears of Eden has persistence! We're working hard to include as much persistence as possible in our Alpha 2 release, but already we can now store and retrieve the rover position as well as the battery charge level! This is the first time that playing Gears of Eden hasn't meant starting over from scratch! Next up on our list of things to add to the persistence system are player inventory and equipped parts. At the very least, we'd love to get those two items added to the save system prior to launching Alpha 2, so stay tuned for more news on this soon.

Another thing we are polishing up for the Alpha 2 release is the environment in Gears. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been going in and adding areas of interest to the game. These areas serve to break up the monotony of the asteroid and provide unique features and geology. We've even introduced our first area that contains an environment effect mechanic: a vapor field of toxic gas venting from the surface that damages your components! Rumors say there may even be an important item in this dangerous area... so bring some repair kits!

In our internal testing builds, we also have recently introduced two new items to the game: sand and glass. Sand introduces our first RNG-based resource. As you drill and collect other elements, such as iron or cobalt, you now have a chance to also collect silicate-rich sand. Each time you do not collect sand, the chance goes up. This small introduction has a number of immediate effects on gameplay. First of all, if you are trying to mine sand, you can't just go out and get what you need. You must mine another element, and pick up sand as a crit drop. Secondly, if you don't want sand, it acts as a filler for your cargo space. This means you have to manage your inventory more carefully, and provides an early incentive to upgrade your cargo hold (something that was previously sorely lacking).

The sand is used to build our first second-level crafting resource in the game, glass. In turn, glass is now used in the recipes for solar panels and spectrometers. These changes make the crafting chains a little more challenging and rewarding. We will be looking for feedback on these system during our Alpha 2 testing window, but if you want to get a sneak peek and provide early feedback, be sure to join our gamedev streams on Twitch.

The UI upgrade we've been working on is completely done, and we're really down to filling out the persistence system and squashing bugs. We should be announcing a release window for Alpha 2 very soon, so please continue to follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for the latest information (and be sure you have signed up for a free alpha key on our website).

As for our larger next steps, I would really appreciate your attention here on the state of the game. With Alpha 2, we really need to make some leaps forward in growing our audience and gaining support. We've done just about as much as we can as a team of decentralized indie developers without funding. We're all working on this project in our spare time, and that means develop can be slow and painstaking. We'll be launching a fundraising campaign to correspond with Alpha 2 to help us develop more quickly. We are also trying to exhibit our game at PAX East in late March. If you're unfamiliar with PAX, it is a large gaming convention that draws over 80,000 fans and is held in Boston. It's not cheap to go as an exhibitor. It will cost us several thousand dollars to attend. Money we do not have. So, this is really a make or break moment for us as a development team. I'm leaning toward putting up the money personally to go and see if this can help provide the exponential growth we need - but it also means if we aren't successful, we might be too far in the hole to keep going. We've raised less than a thousand dollars (without a dedicated campaign) in the 2+ years we've been actively developing, and spent many times that already. So, unfortunately, money is a barrier moving forward. That said, I am exploring the idea of having our booth sponsored - so if you know of any business owners that might be interested, please help us get in touch. If you're interested in helping support our booth personally, let us know as well. You can find us on our Discord server, or reach out to us on social media. Otherwise, we would appreciate the support of all of you when we're ready to roll out our fundraising campaign and Alpha 2 launch to help us spread the word!

Thank you so much for reading. That's going to do it for this update! In case you missed it, we have some brand new robot-themed shirts and mugs available on our DesignByHumans store! And, as a reminder, if you are an Amazon Prime member, you get a free Twitch subscription to use every month. We'd appreciate you using that sub over on our Twitch channel if you aren't already using it! Thank you so much for being part of this journey with us! I'm really excited about Alpha 2, PAX, and am hopeful for the opportunity to take Gears of Eden to new heights in 2019 with all of you!
Gears of Eden - Gears of Eden

It's been a long road. Okay, a REALLY long road. But we're finally closing in on our final Alpha 2 goal: a complete UI overhaul. Even better, we've made good progress on a couple of our stretch goals, and we are now starting to ramp up for our free Alpha 2 release! We're back with a new Developer Update this week to fill you in on all the details! And, quick reminder, you can sign up for a free Alpha 2 key on our website!

We had a couple reasons for wanting to overhaul the user interface. The original was clunky and, visually, a bit heavy handed. We wanted to streamline the interface, make it more minimal, but also give better functional use to players. The new interface accomplishes this. Information is better organized and easier to find, and we've included a more robust feedback system, featuring helpful tooltips. We have a few minor touches we're putting in place, but the UI is about 95% complete and should be wrapping up very soon! We think it's pretty neat (and hope you agree)!

Along with the new UI, we are working on item descriptions for everything in the game. Drills, bits, batteries... these are all parts that were designed by someone or something out there in our game Universe. You wake up as a sentient machine in our game with no knowledge of the outside world or its history. So even these rather mundane items give us an opportunity to introduce you and your character to the world of Gears of Eden. It's amazing how so much thought can go into the background of a drill bit. But, that's where we are! We are putting ourselves into this world, asking ourselves how it operates, and how the world that the player experiences is affected by and separate from the world that came before, known as the Null Era. We're really looking forward to sharing these small details with you in Alpha 2, along with our lore item stories - which give you a broader glimpse into asteroid life from another point of view.

While we've been prepping the UI for Alpha 2, we've also been working on a few stretch goals. For starters, we have recently introduced a new character into the game that ties into our lore stories and first planned mission chain. That mission chain also involves a drone, and we've done some develop on that side as well. Recently we've implemented new camera animations that highlight the drone when you encounter it, and we've even programmed the drone to go into a malfunctioning holding pattern upon waking up.

But that's not all! We've also been adding some new environmental effects like crystals and a vapor jet field, which will tie into that mission chain we just mentioned. And that's what is really neat about this phase we are in now on the brink of Alpha 2's release. All these little pieces are starting to come together. Our prequel stories. Our characters. Our lore items. Our environmental design. We're starting to connect all these disparate parts of game development to a more fulfilling, more complete experience for Gears of Eden players.

That said, we're still very early on. Alpha 2 is going to be far from feature complete. But this is really a showcase moment for us. We want to show you what we've accomplished so far, and then hopefully build up our audience and raise some support to allow us to keep going. It's taken us such a long time to get to this point. It's been a lot of hard work, and we'd really need to ramp up production so it doesn't take another year to hit our next major Alpha release. We'd like to finish the full demo version of Gears of Eden as soon as possible. And then head into the full-blwon game. Alpha 2 is really the break point for us that lets us know if we're doing a good job and get to continue this journey with you and for you.

We want to do this together, after all. You're a big part of this! You can help by following us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Share our posts, and let others know about our project! You can also join our Discord server. Come chat with us! Give us some feedback! Let us know what you think. What ideas you have. What you like, or don't like. You can follow us on Twitch, and join our live streams that feature game development, live podcasts, and fun community gameplay nights. If you like any of what you see or hear, there are multiple ways to support our project now. If you're an Amazon Prime member, you can sub for FREE to our channel each month on Twitch. You can also support us via our website, or Patreon. We'll have other opportunities for support coinciding with our Alpha 2 launch. More to come on that soon!

If you're reading this, you're already supporting us by giving us some of your time and attention. Thank you so much! We'll have more updates on our social media pages, and be back with another Dev Update here soon! I also hear rumors there is (finally) a new official Reaching Eden podcast episode releasing very soon! We hope you enjoy it! Thanks again!
