Frostpunk

Amazon has announced the free PC games available for Prime members in December.

The line-up is strong, with Frostpunk and Journey to the Savage Planet leading the list.

The former is a unique strategy title that sees you exploring an icy wilderness for resources to build your city, balancing the demands of residents with the need for heat. A sequel is on the way too.

It looks like there's more death, misery and ice on the horizon - as a sequel to Frostpunk has been announced by 11 Bit Studios.

Frostpunk 2 is the first of three current in-house projects to be formally revealed by 11-Bit Studios, and given the success of the first game, perhaps this one doesn't come as much of a surprise. A brief announcement trailer has been released, showing that the world of Frostpunk has moved on from coal to oil - although it looks just as brutal as before.

"In Frostpunk's successor, players are once again tasked with playing as the leader of a resource-hungry metropolis where the expansion and search for new sources of power is an unavoidable reality. But the apocalyptic world has moved on," says the press release. "After the age of coal, conquering Frostland for the oil extraction industry is expected to be the new salvation of what's left of humanity. However, change does not come easily, and not everyone in this new multi-layered society will welcome this new direction."

Frostpunk

To me, Frostpunk is a game about pressure, it provides the context for everything you do. What you build depends on where you're being stretched thinnest. Are you running out of coal? Research and improve your coal production. Are you out of food? Do the same for food. Has the temperature dropped and you need better insulation? You'd better hurry up because it definitely isn't getting any warmer. It never lets up. When you think you've solved one problem, Frostpunk provides another two, and every time it does, it dangles a horrid solution in front of you.

Do you want to pass a law enabling child labour? I know you wouldn't normally but look at the situation you're in: children could collect coal, is that really so bad? How about cooking the odd corpse? No one needs to know and you don't have any food. Gradually you find yourself down a road you never thought you would be until you're suddenly staring dictatorial rule in the face. Then again, would it really be so bad?

Frostpunk was thrilling, but in On the Edge, the game's just-released second expansion,
things work slightly differently. The old pressures are still there but they're rejigged because now, there's something else to contend with: inter-settlement relationships. You see, you're not the only people out there. In fact, you're not even in control of the main settlement, New London, any more. You're an offshoot of it, an outpost, established around an Army Warehouse (a new kind of building) where you're to extract materials from it.

11 Bit Studios' glorious post-apocalyptic city builder Frostpunk is poised to receive its third and final expansion, On The Edge, later this month, and its scenario-specific gameplay twists have now been detailed in a new developer video.

In contrast to Frostpunk's The Last Autumn expansion, which showed the world prior to the big freeze seen in the base game, On The Edge is set after the Great Storm that caps its main story.

Once the Great Storm has subsided, a multitude of new landmarks are unearthed across the world. One of these is a previously lost Army Warehouse, which serves as the focal point for this latest expansion. Rather than tasking players with the continued management of New London, On The Edge gives them control of this newly discovered outpost, asking them to establish a civilisation in some very different conditions - with many of Frostpunk's core mechanics turned on their heads to create a distinctive challenge.

Developer 11 Bit Studios' acclaimed post-apocalyptic city builder Frostpunk is being turned into a board game by the team responsible for This War of Mine's superb tabletop adaptation.

Frostpunk: The Board Game is a collaboration between 11 Bit Studios and Glass Cannon Unplugged, and, more specifically, is being designed by This War of Mine: The Board Game co-creator Jakub Wiśniewski along with Adam Kwapiński (Nemesis, Lords of Hellas).

Taking its cue from the video game version, Frostpunk's tabletop adaptation will see up to four players attempting to run a small colony of survivors in a harsh, subzero world. As you'd hope, the aim is to effectively translate the original's core into physical form, and Wiśniewski describes the board game as a "morally complex and highly, highly challenging" experience full of "tough choices, narrative depth, immersive gameplay, snow, and despair".

Developer 11 Bit Studios has pulled back the veil on its mysterious third and final bit of paid DLC for superb post-apocalyptic city builder Frostpunk. What was once known only as Project TVADGYCGJR has now been renamed On The Edge, and it'll be out on Steam this summer.

On The Edge - which follows on from Frostpunk's pre-freeze prequel expansion The Last Autumn and its smaller-scale The Rifts DLC - resumes the grimly gripping city-building survival action some time after the Great Storm that caps the base game's main story.

It'll feature a brand-new story scenario - charting the tribulations of an expedition sent out from New London to explore after the Great Storm - as well as new mechanics for the Frostlands view, and new challenges associated with the expansion's "desolate" new map.

Developer 11 Bit Studios' superb, if rather bleak, post-apocalyptic city-builder Frostpunk is poised to receive another sizeable chunk of DLC on 21st January. Known as The Last Autumn, its pre-freeze setting shakes up Frostpunk's core mechanics in surprisingly significant ways, and 11 Bit has offered a closer look at these changes in its latest developer video.

The Last Autumn, as its name suggests, unfolds prior to the apocalyptic freeze that's decimated civilisation by the time the base game gets underway. Some have already predicted its arrival, however, and are making preparations should the worst come to pass.

This is where you come in, charged with constructing a generator tower in the middle of the wilderness, in order to establish a safe haven for humanity and support the evacuation efforts of the British Empire. The result, according to 11 Bit, is a "completely revamped experience", affecting "pretty much every layer of the game".

The Last Autumn, developer 11 Bit Studios' second bit of paid DLC for its superb post-apocalyptic city builder Frostpunk, will be out on PC in January - and there's a brand-new trailer to get you in the pre-apocalyptic mood.

Previously described as a "prequel expansion", The Last Autumn introduces a brand-new scenario that unfolds in an area known as Site 113, so far untouched by snow. Here, players must lead a group of engineers in an attempt to construct a generator before the freezing cataclysm seen in the main campaign takes hold.

According to 11 Bit Studios, The Last Autumn will introduce new lore and narrative elements, a new (non-snowy) environment and new buildings, new Books of Laws, unique technologies, plus "game-changing mechanics and unique architecture". You can get an early taste of that in the expansion's reveal trailer below.

Developer 11 Bit Studios has launched The Rifts, the first of three planned paid DLC updates for its superb post-apocalyptic city builder Frostpunk.

The Rifts, which follows over a year of free content updates, introduces a brand-new Endless Mode map to Frostpunk, offering a challenging new twist on the game's already punishing city building core. Not only must players gather and build to fight the freeze of Frostpunk's endless winter, they now have to contend with a ravine-scarred map split into awkward landmasses, making expansion and survival that much harder. To assist players in their struggle, The Rifts adds new constructible bridges, and an assortment of other new mechanics.

Frostpunk's second paid DLC offering, The Last Autumn, arrives in Q4 this year, and is described as a "prequel expansion" beginning on the first day of the big freeze. The developer says The Last Autumn will, alongside new lore and narrative, introduce a brand-new scenario "with game-changing mechanics and unique architecture".

Usually I'd be writing about the hottest gaming deals but given the title in question, this is a much chillier offer than we're used to.

For the next seven days at Fanatical, you can get icy city-building survival sim Frostpunk for only 11.24. All you need to do is add the code 'FROSTPUNK10' at the checkout.

Fanatical is calling that the lowest price the game has ever been - and I certainly haven't seen it drop any further than that before.
