Far Cry® 4

Dan Hay, the veteran creative behind many Far Cry games, leaves Ubisoft today after a decade of service.

Hay served as a producer on Far Cry 3, before moving to an executive producer role for Far Cry 4 and 5, and the series' Blood Dragon, Primal and New Dawn spin-offs.

A Venturebeat report states Hay had been helping build the next iteration of the Far Cry series, which will launch as a live-service.

Last week we heard that several fan-made GoldenEye levels in Far Cry 5 had been pulled by Ubisoft following a copyright claim, but it seems the author has now reuploaded the levels under a new name - which will hopefully be enough to ensure the levels stay up in future.

After confirming the levels had been pulled, creator Krollywood said a few days ago he intended to "change some details like names and re-upload them as soon as possible," and it seems that's now happened. Krollywood confirmed in a Reddit comment that the levels have been reuploaded to Far Cry 5's arcade mode under the name "Golden Cry". To find them on PS4 you'll need to search for the creator name "Perfect-Dark1982", and on PC the creator name is "Graslu00".

Krollywood spent two and a half years recreating the 18 GoldenEye 007 levels in Far Cry 5's level editor, and you can hear a little about how he did it in the video below:

Ubisoft has pulled GoldenEye levels a fan made in Far Cry 5 after a copyright infringement complaint.

YouTuber Krollywood spent two-and-a-half years recreating Rare's seminal N64 first-person shooter inside the level editor provided within Far Cry 5, but this week Ubisoft removed the levels from the game's arcade mode after a copyright infringement claim reportedly issued by MGM.

All 18 GoldenEye campaign levels were remade and made available to play by anyone in Far Cry 5's arcade mode, even with the odd additional Easter egg. You can check out the Dam remake level in the video below:

Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Rainbox Six Siege, Watch Dogs and a handful of other big Ubisoft series on PC are on sale for up to 75 per cent at Amazon.

In most cases, it's the bulkier editions of the individual games that are reduced, so you'll often find they come with extra DLC and season passes already included. Not a bad way to catch up on some of these, then, if you've been waiting for a sale!

Of the lot, the best deal is probably the Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Ultimate Edition for 24. This version of the Grecian stab-em-up includes the Deluxe Pack and season pass as standard to add to the already mountains of content the base game offers. You'll find a whole cache of extra gear, story content and boosts.

Ubisoft has fully lifted the covers off the post-apocalyptic Far Cry that it teased recently, with Far Cry New Dawn coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on 15th February.

The trailer showed a world set some years after the events of Far Cry 5, the post-apocalyptic setting enabling a makeshift aesthetic in weapons and vehicles and throughout the world - which looks like a lightly reimagined take on Far Cry 5's Hope County.

It's tempting to make comparisons to Far Cry Primal, another spin-off that launched in the immediate wake of a numbered Far Cry game - and it turned out okay when it launched in February 2016.

Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon

Far Cry 5's next DLC offering - Dead Living Zombies - will release on 28th August 2018, and from a split-second tease near the end of its latest trailer, it seems Far Cry's fan-favourite Blood Dragons are making a comeback.

The latest DLC content promises a zombified version of Romeo and Juliet, where Romeo is - for reasons left unexplained - a Frankenstein's monster-esque patchwork of other B-movie creatures, including what appears to be a werewolf, a vampire, a mummy, and bits of Frankenstein's mutilated buddy, too (which makes it a Frankenstein monster of Frankenstein's monster, right? I think?)

Chuck in a little Bridges of Madison County and that's all I thought Dead Living Zombies was... right until I got to the end of the teaser (thanks, PCGN). While the trailer focuses chiefly on a fairly predictable bevvy of undead denizens, in the dying seconds there's a shot of a Blood Dragon. Here, take a look, paying particularly close attention when it gets to 0.36:

Ubisoft has announced that Far Cry 5's next DLC episode, the pulpy sci-fi-themed Lost on Mars, will be coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC next week, on July 17th.

Lost on Mars is the second of three planned story episodes for Far Cry 5, and (as was the case with last month's Vietnam-themed Hours of Darkness DLC), is a notable departure from the comparatively grounded events of the base game.

This time around, Hope County resident Nick Rye takes centre-stage, having been teleported to Mars in order to help his friend Hurk thwart an alien invasion of Earth. It introduces new alien weaponry, and Space Jets for traversal across the red planet. "Humankind's future is in the hands of the game's most notorious guns-for-hire," says Ubisoft, "Time to squash some bugs!"

Opinions might be divided on Far Cry 5, but there's little argument that its recreation of the lush Montana landscape is very pretty indeed. And the game's latest update on Xbox One, PS4, and PC takes full advantage of that fact, offering up a brand-new Photo Mode.

Photo Mode arrives as part of Far Cry 5's unambitiously monikered Title Update 8 and can be accessed while the game is paused during Solo gameplay modes - that's the main campaign, all DLC story campaigns, and on any Far Cry Arcade solo map.

It's a decently featured addition too, enabling budding photographers to adjust the time of day and field of view, and apply filters, frames, and logos directly onto images. It's even possible to adjust your character's facial expression - a feature that's already proved its amusement value in the likes of Nintendo's Wind Waker remaster, and, more recently, God of War.

Far Cry 5's first bit of post-launch DLC, Hours of Darkness, will be coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on June 5th, Ubisoft has announced.

Hours of Darkness is the first of three rather bizarrely themed bits of DLC planned for Ubisoft's enormously successful open-world shooter, and sees Far Cry 5 trade its usual Montana setting for the Viet Cong. The connecting thread is Wendell "Red" Redler, soldier and citizen of Hope County, "who must find and rescue his fellow squad members from hostile forces during the Vietnam War".

In present day Hope County, as seen in the main game, Wendell Redler can be found at the Redler Residence, in Far Cry 5's Holland Valley region.

Far Cry 5 isn't just a hit - it's a monster hit - bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of sales.

Ubisoft said this week that the open-world shooter, which launched in March 2018, enjoyed first week sales of $310m, making it Ubisoft's second biggest release ever. (The Division remains Ubisoft's biggest launch in history with $330m in its first week.)

Obviously, Ubisoft won't see all of that money - retailers and platform holders such as Valve, Microsoft and Sony all take a cut before cash flows into Ubisoft's coffers. Still, Ubisoft will no doubt be delighted with the remarkable return. For context, Far Cry 5's launch more than doubled that of Far Cry 4, which launched in 2014.
