When Fallout 76 launched in 2018 it was, frankly, Rust’s younger cousin wearing the clothes it stole from Fallout 4’s closet. After two years of updates – quests, companions, factions, and more – Fallout 76 waddles like a Wastelander and quacks like one too. I chatted with Fallout 76 project lead Jeff Gardiner and lead quest designer Brianna Schneider about where the game is headed, and the answer could be out of Appalachia.

The Brotherhood Of Steel brought a lot of metal with them when they arrived in Fallout 76. Power Armour, weapons, you name it. But in a more quietly pleasant addition to the wasteland, it looks like Bethesda also added wheelchairs with last week’s update, following one fan’s request to see their own real-life mobility aid represented in the post-apocalyptic sandbox.

You’d think it’d be hard to get anywhere early, weighed down by all that power armour. And yet, despite all odds, the Brotherhood Of Steel has marched into Fallout 76 a little earlier than planned. After accidentally gifting Xbox players the gift of technophilic paladins, Bethesda have chosen to just give the update to everyone rather than roll back the update and have folks wait another week. Nice!

After that big Wastelanders update that added human NPCs and a legit storyline to Fallout 76 earlier this year, the story quests are rolling right along with the upcoming Steel Dawn update. Militant tech fanatics Brotherhood Of Steel are entering Appalachia while apparently doing what they do best: stomping around in power armor and scowling. A new teaser trailer lets on just a little bit about what the new story will add to online Fallout.

It feels weird to write something like, ‘Celebrate the Fallout bombs dropping this week!’ Because it’s a bit dark and gloomy, and ‘celebrate’ certainly feels like the wrong word. But hey, that’s exactly what Bethesda are doing.

October 23rd is the day in Fallout lore where the world went bang and those lucky (or unlucky) enough to have a place in a vault disappeared underground. To commemorate the special day, you can play Fallout 76 for free between now and October 26th, and take part in some in-game events, too.

Begone the travails of fighting against terrain to build your shoddy Fallout 76 camp with wood you’ve scraped off fallen trees. Life is oh so much better below. Fallout 76 is adding underground vault instances for your base where you can build without the restrictions out in the fresh air. You can test out the Vault Shelters this weekend on the public test server before they’re added to the game later this year.

Fallout 76

has launched another update, this one bringing a bit of equality to Appalachia. The One Wasteland Update balances 76’s combat with the goal of easing news players into the game while making sure those mavericks over level 200 will still have some appropriate challenges. Along with level scaling, the new update kicks off Season 2 of the game’s S.C.O.R.E. reward track system.

The Fallout 76 clown car continued its strange journey this week, as the recently semi-redeemed MMO stumbled over another technical hitch.

The popular in-game event Fasnacht Day was expected to start on Monday, but was quickly stalled by a bug. Players reacted with great frustration as the event was taken down, depriving everyone of an hourly semi-charming, semi-creepy masked robot march. Bethesda report that all is now well, and the event restarts today.

Bethesda have released their remaining 2020 plans for scrap-hoarding MMO Fallout 76. Over the next 6 months they’ll follow up the success of the Wastelanders update and its influx of NPCs by introducing a seasonal system featuring new missions, daily events, and a “major rebalancing of combat and rewards”.

Originally ill-fated and now much-upgraded sort of MMO Fallout 76 is having its moment in the sun at last. It’s still not the best Fallout game on the block, but it’s not someplace you’d be utterly embarrassed to invite your mates. To that end, Bethesda are running a free-to-play weekend starting this Thursday. Now that the online Fallout game has made its way to Steam, it’s just that little bit easier to wheedle a Fallout-liking friend into giving it a try with you.
