Fallout 4

Post-Nuclear Silent Hill? To this I say: No, thanks, I’m good. I don’t need that and it sounds terrifying. But if it sounds like something you would like then I have the mod for you.

Whispering Hills tweaks Fallout 4 into a foggy, twisted hellscape where you can be dragged into a world of horrors at any time. The mod overhauls the environment of Fallout 4’s Commonwealth by adding ten different thick fog weathers effects, amping up the surprises pretty thoroughly. The background sounds are also removed and replaced by far spookier ones. As you play, you can be “dragged into the otherworld” and forced to face hordes of monsters for a few minutes—creatures like Ghouls, twisted Silent Hill nurses, Twin-Head Screamers, and mutant Dogs.

The mod has been around for about a year, but recently got a big update including a new thing I now hate and fear: A lurking horror called “Sirenhead.” Seriously:

That’s a hard pass from me, my friends. You can find the terror of whispering hills over on ModDB. Let me know what it’s like if you install it because I am too afraid to do so.

Fallout 4

Poor Preston Garvey. All he wants to do is rebuild the Commonwealth by nagging you to help out settlements every fifteen seconds for the entirety of Fallout 4. And for that, he's become a punching bag for the entire internet. Just a few months ago a modder made Preston Garvey six inches tall and gave him a chipmunk voice, a true indignity for a good man with a harmless (yet obnoxious) settlement fetish.

Today, something a little different for the Minutemen's senior officer. A modder has helped Preston Garvey reach his final form, that of a super mutant. He even has a deep voice, which you can hear if you turn sound on in the gif below:

Maybe this was done as a joke at Preston's expense, but I honestly think this makes him a lot more likeable. He's huge and lumbering now, which gives him an endearing quality, and the deep voice gives him an edge of sadness which makes him much more sympathetic. I would date Super Mutant Preston Garvey.

It also makes sense that Preston would have become exposed to dangerous amounts of radiation after a lifetime spent finding settlements across the Commonwealth that desperately need help (but then apparently just delegating it all to you, whenever you find time in your busy schedule).

You can download the Super Mutant Preston Garvey Mod by Toro Montana at Nexus Mods.

With Halloween approaching, we no longer just have to worry about decorating our crypts with suitably spooky props, we also have to worry about making sure our digital abodes are equally festive. For the denizens of Fallout 4, they can thankfully get most of what they need from a new Halloween decor mod.

Lunchbox Mods' Halloween pack adds a bunch of unique items to the build menu, letting you plonk down lots of pumpkins, graves and cheerful skeletons, making sure your neighbours know that Halloween is serious business.

The best part of the collection has got to be this poor skeleton who has been tossed in a drum and halfheartedly dressed up with a rubbish homemade mask. Not all costumes can be winners.

When you live with the horror of ghouls and mutants and radiation every single day, I'm not sure if there would be much appeal in dressing up as monsters and sticking skeletons everywhere, but I'm not one to deny anyone the chance to participate in this sacred festival of scares.

Fallout 4

Judging by a listing on Amazon Germany, a collection of every Fallout game ever made – except Fallout 76 – will release on October 25. That's a lot of game: it includes Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4, in addition to all associated DLC. That's a lot of instances of 'fallout' in a sentence.

Bethesda hasn't officially announced the package, and while Amazon tends to be fairly reliable, there's still a chance it's not real. But if it is real, it's damn good value: the German price is 40 euros, which translates roughly into $44 / £36 / AU$65. Considering Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition alone is currently $60 / £40 / AU$90 on Steam, it'll be a great way to get all the games.

Of course, most people probably have these games, and they've very often obtainable at discount prices. The most interesting thing about the package is the least relevant to us: the product description seems to suggest that all Fallout games previous to Fallout 4 will come to current gen consoles.

The Google translate reads: "The full collection of all award-winning single-player games in the series! Return to Odland with the Fallout 4 - Game of the Year Edition. It contains all the gameplay updates, graphic enhancements, the ability to download and play free mods on PCs and consoles, and all six official extensions. Welcome back to New Vegas! With Ultimate Edition, Bethesda Softworks is putting together the complete Fallout: New Vegas package. The main game with the four additions Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road will immerse you even deeper into the world of New Vegas."

The listing boxshot is below.

Fallout 4

The history of Fallout 76 collectibles has had almost as bumpy a road as the game itself, beginning with the whole canvas bag fiasco, continuing with a rather unattractive (and expensive) (and widely mocked) leather jacket, and culminating most recently with a T-51 power armor helmet that had to be recalled due to a mold risk

The T-51 replica helmet, made by Chronicle and sold by Gamestop, contained a polyester/cotton blend fabric liner that posed a risk of mold exposure, which could potentially lead to a respiratory infection or other health issues.

If you weren't one of the lucky customers who bought a moldy T-51 power armor helmet for $150, at least you can experience it virtually. Naturally, a modder has added the moldy power armor helmet to Fallout 4.

The Moldy T-51 Helmet mod adds a helmet that, when worn, will give your character constant radiation damage. Flavor text states the polyester/cotton blend fabric liner resulted in a recall of the power armor helmets during the war due to the adverse effect on the wearer's health.

You'll need to own the Nuka-World DLC to put the moldy helmet on your character's head and start damaging their lungs. The moldy liner can be found under 'Misc Mods' in your power armor crafting menu. Enjoy.

Everyone wants to pat dogs in videogames nowadays. You can show your affection to dogs in Enter the Gungeon, and there's a mod for making friends with dogs in Wolfenstein 3D. The world has gone dog crazy. You know patting dogs is "a big thing" because even flagrant meme bandwagon jumper Fortnite lets you do it

Meanwhile, cats seem to have gone a bit out of fashion. Remember when everyone cared more about cats? The world seemed less complex, back then. But since we are firmly in the era of loving dogs more than cats (and who can complain about animals getting love), it's no surprise that you can now pat the dogs – any friendly dogs, not just Dogmeat – in Fallout 4. 'Pet Any Dog' is a mod created by Sagittarius22, and it pretty much does what you'd expect.

It's not completely straightforward though: you need at least Rank 1 of the Animal Friend perk. And it'll only work on friendly or neutral dogs, so don't try to pat angry and aggressive dogs: they will murder you. Meanwhile, both the player and dog must not be in combat, and you can't pat the dog while wearing power armor (that wouldn't feel nice for the dog).

Check out the mod over here. If you're a modder, perhaps peruse our list of games that need pattable dogs

Fallout 4

Poor Preston Garvey. He's not really a bad fellow, it's just that his insatiable settlement fetish makes him the target for a lot of mockery and memes. The latest indignity heaped upon this Fallout 4 follower is a mod called Small Preston, which shrinks the notorious Commonwealth Minuteman to roughly 10% of his normal size. He's so small! And yet he still needs your help with another settlement!

I should quickly point out that the modder isn't just picking on Preston, as Brotherhood of Steel cheerleader Paladin Danse can also be made very small with this mod. And, the mod even includes an optional file that makes the player 50% smaller as well. But Tiny Garvey is far more amusing to me than Tiny Danse or Tiny Me.

Just look how wee Preston is!

In fact, after installing the mod I had a bit of trouble finding Preston—for two reasons. First, I couldn't remember where I'd left him, but even after turning on the VIP tracker (the computer that marks your followers on your HUD) I still couldn't find him. Because he's small! So very, very small. I eventually spotted him strolling around the garden at my Sanctuary settlement, dwarfed by the melon crop. Frankly, he's hard to see even when you know exactly where he is.

If you want to take things a step further than I did, you can give Preston a voice befitting his newfound size. In the discussion posts for the Small Preston mod, a Nexus Mods member stated they would only endorse the mod if Preston's voice was "that of a chipmunk for 100% immersion." Another modder quickly jumped in and made that a reality with the High Pitch Voice for Small Preston mod. It does what you'd expect, to the majority of the 2,421 lines of dialogue Garvey has.

Enjoy a few more pictures of Tiny Preston, a few from me and a few from the Small Preston mod page on Nexus Mods. For obvious reasons, you may need to view them full-size.

Fallout 4

Fallout Miami is an upcoming Fallout 4 mod that creates an entirely new world set on the coast of post-apocalyptic Florida. When finished it's expected to be about twice the size of Fallout 4: Far Harbor and packed with new quests, locations, and factions. The mod isn't complete yet, but in the meantime you can take a look at an early version thanks to modder Mika999, who uploaded it to Nexus Mods yesterday.

Bear in mind this early version isn't reflective of the final version Fallout Miami.

"This early version of Fallout Miami is the first worldspace I made when I started this project," reads Mika999's post on the Nexus Mod page, "and that's why I must emphasize that it won't be present in the final version of Fallout Miami and is not associated with the current project."

Essentially, when the Fallout Miami modding team grew, it was collectively agreed to make a number of changes to the world in order to improve optimization and provide a higher level of detail. A new worldspace was created for the mod and not everything from this original version was carried over. But Mika999 didn't want to see the original version of Miami be lost forever, and decided to release it so players could take a look at it for themselves—sort of like releasing a first draft of a novel.

In order to check it out you'll need Fallout 4 and all official DLC. You can install the mod with Nexus Mod Manager and download the mod (and a hotfix) right here.

Fallout 4

If you thought the problem with Fallout 4 was that its characters didn't have big enough eyes and small enough noses then here's the mod for you. It's called Animerace Nanakochan and it transforms Fallout 4's women into winsome anime ladies. (The modder has no plans to do the same for the Commonwealth's men.)

The mod works both on the player-character and NPCs and you can see how character creation works in the video below. It seems like there are some issues with longer hairstyles clipping through clothes, but that's a common problem in any game that allows extensive character creation.

You can download Animerace Nanakochan from Nexusmods. It's been downloaded over 7,600 times so far.

Fallout 4

The latest progress update from the Fallout: Miami mod is here and it's a nice reminder that work continues on this ambitious Fallout 4 project. Nothing major is revealed in the video but there are mentions of the factions (including the Nuclear Patriots and the Dreamers, junkies in animal masks who seem inspired by Hotline Miami), and the reputation system, which will be less involved than the one New Vegas had, but will still do things like effect which ending you get.

Right at the end of the video is a look at the animations for a new weapon, a quadruple-barreled shotgun that looks real slick. No more mentions of my favorite part of the original trailer, the beach ghouls complete with inflatable swim rings, but maybe next time.

There's a call for recruitment as well, so if you're interested in joining the team then head over here.
