Ether One - Pete_Bottomley
Ether One is now 10 years old since we first launched on Steam.

We were fortunate enough to get onto Steam via the Greenlight process back in 2012. Since that moment, we've been able to create games for a living and have a distribution platform for our work. We'll be forever grateful for Steam giving us our first platform to release our work on and since then many more have opened their doors.

We recorded a full playthrough of Ether One with the development team in the same space the game was developed in. We discuss the origins of the game, the studio and how we released Ether One via Steam back in 2014.

Please come and share the journey with us as we revisit Pinwheel and look back on how Ether One came to be:

PART 1/4 - The Beginning
Ether One - Pete_Bottomley
Hello all!

We've been hard at work over the past few years to bring you a new game which shares some of its values with Ether One. It's called Conway: Disappearance at Dahlia View.

It's a puzzle driven game by the same designers that brought you Ether One full of spaces to explore with a strong narrative arc which we hope you all resonate with.

To thank you for owning Ether One and being part of our journey, we're giving you all an additional 10% off the purchase. Conway is on sale for the first week at 10% which means you'll get 20% off the purchase for owning Ether.

We'd love it if you were able to take the time to explore our latest game and please do let us know your thoughts if you play it! We'd be interested to hear how Conway resonates with you compared to your experiences of Ether One.

We hope to see you there and continue your journey with our White Paper games.

Thank you,

- The White Paper team

To cut a very long story short, the save system needed a rewrite from the ground up in terms of how certain delay actions were handled. That in combination with an Unreal Engine version update to something more modern took a lot longer than intended. We also didn't want to rush out a patch that could make save file issues even worse.

You can visit the forum for a full list of the patch notes here.

Thank you all again for your patience and we hope you enjoy!
Ether One - Pete_Bottomley

This patch update was quite a large one, and as a result of this, we'll be monitoring any game issues very closely over the next couple of weeks. If needed, we'll patch again quickly for anything broken in the architecture and then if no issues arise, we'll patch on console in the coming weeks (since this process takes longer than than on PC). This is a huge shift in architecture in many areas, meaning we're hoping to see increased performance, but this may also be responsible for some bugs we couldn't account for.

I've written a little more about why this process took a little longer than we would have liked on our blog for those interested here : http://whitepapergames.tumblr.com/post/153295779040/a-patch-note-from-the-team

Engine update:
  • Unreal Engine has been updated from Unreal Engine 4.8.0 to Unreal Engine 4.13.0

Puzzle fixes:
  • Included a fix for the Miners Dry, Church & Miners Vigil (candle puzzle) for projectors that weren't completing correctly in those area.

Game fixes:
  • Severe culling (assets streaming in) in Pinwheel Harbour and Devlin mine adjusted
  • Adjustment to end of extraction animation
  • Added extraction rubber banding
  • Changed keyboard button prompts to be in red
  • Fixed timings on subtitles
  • Fixed possible issues with Ether projector puzzles not saving properly
  • Removed chances for players getting stuck during extraction sequence
  • Added additional auto-saves to save player progression more frequently.
  • Changed audio in menu navigation
  • Fixed off centre button prompt texts
  • Centered item inspect text
  • Set subtitles to 'On' by default
  • Included spelling corrections in the English subtitles.
  • Fixed look sensitivity not saving and made slider more impactful, started mouse with higher sensitivity by default
  • Fixed a corrupted save issue that was occurring when the game autosaved by moving between levels
  • Save Game times in some situations weren't displayed 'Played Time' correctly, as this wasn't reproducible on our end, we believe a fix has been put in place to rectify this.

As always, we'll continue to support Ether One to make it the best title it can be so please do reach out either on the forums or through our contact page here if you have any issues, questions or comments: http://whitepapergames.com/2016/contact.php

    Thanks!

Ether One Redux is out now - to celebrate, we're giving you 40% off whilst also giving it away for free to the people that already own the game!

Both Ether One and Ether One Redux are very similar games and we've not changed any of the narrative or gameplay. We rebuilt Ether One from the ground up using the new Unreal Engine 4 so you may notice a few graphical improvements however we have tried to keep it as close to the original as possible! 'Redux' just refers to the updated version of the game so you know what you're looking for in your game library!

When you buy, you will get both version of the game (basically giving you one for free!). We thought it was important to give our fans the opportunity to play both versions instead of only the latest Redux edition.

We wanted to make sure we gave this away for free to the people that already own Ether One as a thank you for playing and sharing your experiences with us. You've helped us develop our studio and allowed us to make another game so thank you for everything. Hopefully you will enjoy the next game we have lined up for you just as much!

From all the team, thank you again & enjoy!

Happy May Day Pinwheelians!

To celebrate we'd love to know everyone's most memorable May 1st experiences in Pinwheel. What did you all enjoy the most about spending time in Pinwheel & Ether One? Were you the type of player to wander through the environment just picking up the narrative? Or did you try to unravel every puzzle in the game? Possibly a mix of both?

Did the story connect with you on an emotional level? Could you relate to the story personally? Has it helped you understand or relate to dementia in any way?

Whatever your thoughts, we'd love you to share them here! :)
