Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry silver fox Vergil will arrive as DLC for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of DMC5 on 15th December, priced £4/€5/$5.

That's a couple of weeks after you'll be able to play as Vergil in the new Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.

Speaking of that next-gen version, Capcom has today confirmed details of what will differ between Xbox Series X and the dinkier Series S. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the latter won't have the 4K visuals or ray tracing available on the former, though both will run at "high frame rates up to 120fps".

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition is not coming out on PC, Capcom has said - sparking a raft of review bombs on Steam.

Last night, during Sony's PlayStation 5 event, Capcom unveiled Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, which includes Vergil as a playable character, as well as the Legendary Dark Knight mode (lots of enemies coming at you at once), Turbo mode (20 per cent gameplay speed increase), and ray-tracing support.

It turns out this Special Edition is for PS5 and Xbox Series X only - and won't be released for PC.

Though it seems most mods these days focus on either stripping characters starkers or Thomas-the-Tank-Engine-ing everything, here's a brilliant little Devil May Cry 5 mod that's neither of those things: it enables three-player co-op on PC.

As spotted by wccftech, the mod buffs the game's original Cameo System which used to permit random players to jump in and join you. Modders Dante and Raz0r have gone several steps further than this, however, boosting the options to include co-op matchmaking in almost all of the missions, including the Bloody Palace, and an auto-reconnect hack, too, so you can instantly reconnect when unpausing the game.

While the modders are actively committed to improving the mod and have resolved a number of issues, missions 6, 18, 19, 20 and BP stage 101 retain a number of concerns and are therefore not compatible. You also can't have more than one of each character on your team, either.

It's fair to say that Capcom has had a tremendous year, and it looks like the publisher is celebrating with a big fat sale at Fanatical.

While its impressive Resident Evil 2 Remake and record-breaking Monster Hunter World aren't among the offers, this year's Devil May Cry 5 is, which has been slashed by half to 22.49 - a Smoking Sexy Stylish deal for one of the best action games of the year.

Other highlights that are down to just a few quid include the rather underrated 2014 reboot of Strider, cult favourite Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen and DontNod's pre-Life is Strange dystopian action adventure Remember Me.

Microsoft has fumbled around in its magical bag of Game Pass treats and yanked out a fresh helping of games coming to the Xbox One and PC subscription service this month, including Devil May Cry 5, The Bard's Tale 4, and Blair Witch.

Starting today, the big 'un is Capcom's superb hack-and-slash revival, Devil May Cry 5, which will be available for Game Pass subscribers on Xbox One. Also coming to console via Game Pass today is Paradox's mighty sci-fi grand strategy opus Stellaris, while PC players get their strategy fix in the form of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition.

As for the rest of August, there's jazz-hued primate action from Ape Out, arriving on PC and Xbox One next Thursday, 22nd August, and open-world RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance is added on the same day.

It seems online retailers are still forming an orderly queue to begin their seasonal sales. Now, another has made their way to the front of the pack as today marks the start of the Gamesplanet Summer Sale.

It's off to a very strong start, too, as the headline flash deal for Monday is Devil May Cry 5 for 24.99. The latest entry in the demonic hack-and-slasher is "unashamedly old school" in its approach to reinvigorating the stylish series. I thought it was perfectly good, sure, but I'll always have a soft spot for Ninja Theory's punky attempt with DmC: Devil May Cry.

That's definitely cheap, but if you're happy to use them you can also find it for a few quid cheaper at 18.99 from CD Keys. Devil May Cry 5 is also down to 27.85 on PS4 at Base, which is the lowest price we've seen for the console version so far. Sadly it hasn't been matched on Xbox One.

Devil May Cry 5 "successfully reinvigorated" the series, Capcom has said.

Capcom shipped 2m copies of the action game, it confirmed in a financial report. Shipped doesn't mean sales to customers, but Capcom stressed Devil May Cry 5, alongside Resident Evil 2, had "exceeded expectations".

Devil May Cry 5 is the first "mainline" entry in the series for over 10 years, and follows Ninja Theory's excellent but, according to Capcom, non-mainline DmC: Devil May Cry, which came out in 2013.

Some things just go perfectly together, even if they're so very different. Strawberries and black pepper. Bacon and syrup. Watermelon and feta. Okay, I haven't tried that last one, but I'm told it works.

Sekiro and Devil May Cry 5 have a fair few similarities - they're both early contenders for game of the year, and both products of Japanese developers at the top of their game - but they come from opposing ends of the action spectrum. Sekiro, as you may well know, updates the long neglected Tenchu formula, demanding patience, exquisite timing and controlled bursts of aggression. Devil May Cry 5, on the other hand, plays faster and harder, a relentless explosion of noise and fury.

And so if Sekiro swells with grace like a shomyo chant, Devil May Cry 5 thumps like the death metal that screams through an angry teen's freshly slammed bedroom door. And, it turns out, the two complement each other just brilliantly.

It's another puzzling situation for Devil May Cry 5, this time for European PlayStation 4 users.

MILD SPOILERS FOR DEVIL MAY CRY 5 AHEAD.

Capcom issued an update for the game that adds the Bloody Palace mode, and with it pulled the lens flare butt cover-up that was included with the 18-rated action game on PS4 at launch.
