Prelude
Designing enemies in Dad Quest has always been a challenge. By throwing their child, a player can attack from an infinite number of angles, and a versatile toolbox of toys and charge abilities just adds to their combat options. There is an inherent push-pull dynamic involved in moving the Dad and Child together as a unit - the Dad must avoid being damaged by enemy attacks while the Child performs counter-attacks. When designing the offense of enemies for a given area, we take into account the movement options of the Player, and figure out how to attack the Player in ways that challenge their current moveset. As the Player begins Chapter 2, they have an additional movement option to work with: Double Jump. With Double Jump, the Player can more easily avoid grounded enemies, but they will need to precisely time their jumps to maneuver past flipping pigs and zooming snowy owls while trekking up the Mountains. They will also need to keep their Child close by, as a Child falling off a cliff can leave its unprotected Dad in mortal danger.

Ice Variants
Having migrated to the mountains from the nearby desert ages ago, these creatures have developed certain traits that set them apart from their relatives, and allow them to survive the harsh cold. Their sub-zero temperature attacks will freeze a warm-blooded Dad on contact, so steer clear or wear a Scarf!

Pigs
Once part of a peaceful, fun-loving family, these creatures became feral, shed their clothes, and ran off into the wild. Now dangerous and nude, they perform flips with their strong haunches to attack anything they consider threatening. Keep your eyes peeled for surprise pigs, and hit them out of the air!

Snowmen
Driven into a trance-like state by overwhelming boredom - caused by being rooted in the same spot for their entire lives - these creatures spend their days ripping off their own heads and bowling them toward anything that moves. Since they live in a land of ever-present snowfall, they are able to regrow their heads, and the cycle continues. Don’t fret, though - they can’t turn around! Just get behind them and give ‘em a whack!

Bat
These tiny, three-eyed creatures can fly very fast and are often found in groups; however, they are quite weak, often dying to a single blow. They enjoy hanging out in caves and overhangs, as well as annoying passing travellers.

Bulb
These creatures are born with the unfortunate combination of both an extremely delicate, glass-like exoskeleton and a tendency to be easily frightened. They shatter on contact, leaving behind several pointy shards that are harmful to the touch. Stand back, and watch your step!

Yeti
Once a tribe of peaceful cave-dwellers in the caves near the Gastop, a chance encounter with an abandoned crate of energy drinks has led these creatures to be wild, aggressive, and dangerous. They will often hurl balls of snow and rock at passerby, and even try to bodyslam those who try to get too close. Keep your distance! Travelers seeking passage through the Mountains often go missing near their caves...

Owl
These majestic flying creatures have an almost ghostly appearance as they gently float through the snowy air and perch near cliff faces. They feed on mountain climbing rats, and don’t like travelers who get too close to their nests.

Rat
Servants of the Royal Trash Family, these little rodents like to climb walls and scavenge in dumpsters. They are able to survive almost anywhere. Those whom the Royal Trash Family find trustworthy get additional training in the skills of spear-throwing and bipedal movement.

Blog by Sundae Month's Ryan Huggins

Summary:

As a whole, Dad Quest was always designed to be funny (at least to some degree), but our aim with each joke was never to KO you with humor. We wanted to establish a world where whimsical things exist and are just generally amusing and by doing so, allow for humor to feel organic rather than forced.

Originally, we had designed Dad Quest with Adult Swim in mind. We were aiming to hook them with the premise and then subvert the expectation of their viewers with a very mellow, whimsical, PG-rated comedy game rather than the bloody, overwhelming humor that the channel was known for when we first started. We feel like most people expect a game called Dad Quest that’s about throwing your Child as a projectile weapon to be this offensive, over-the-top joke game and we really wanted to challenge that by taking the ridiculous premise and building a game without most of those expected things. We decided to build out an entire world based around the concept rather than make it this brutal thing. It was tough, but we feel like we’ve succeeded and a big part of why the game has taken so long to come out is because it took lots of iteration for us to figure out which mechanics/scenarios lended themselves to the type of humor that worked with the premise.

How we create a “joke”:

We have a relatively large team with intersecting styles of humor, but in general, jokes are freeform and start with a concept that’s amusing and ridiculous. We then worldbuild around it. Ridiculous ideas lead to internally consistent scenarios that are very funny to a lot of players as they aren’t what anyone would expect, but that aren’t just like “what?” or “lolrandom” jokes.

With that said, mechanically we factor in five things when coming up with and executing a “joke”:

Setting
Story
Tone
Expectation
Subversion

Setting determines where the joke is going to take place and usually in Dad Quest that means us asking, “Okay, what part of the game right now needs something more? What part feels empty?” Once we determine that, we evaluate what’s missing (usually jokes or side content) and then conceptualize story ideas.

Story effectively means establishing what is going to happen. This is heavily dependent on what the setting and thus the context is, but it can also be influenced by what tone we feel the location in question needs. Story usually defines characters, motivations, and actions.

Tone is the emotional element. Usually tone is established by sound, but when we establish tone, we are usually doing it through the pacing and content of the dialogue. We don’t have very many slapstick or visual gags in Dad Quest, so a lot of what is funny relies heavily on setting, story, context, tone and finally what is actually said by our NPCs.

All of the above allow us to set Expectations which we can then use dialogue to Subvert. Usually we do this simply shifting the tone to something unexpected, but that is feasible, generally with a quirky line of dialogue. Jokes like this work really well in Dad Quest because you never really know what to expect so nearly everything can be a joke. This allows for jokes to come from anywhere at at unexpected times.

What is “humor”?:

Now most people think that a critical element of being funny is knowing what “funny” actually is or being funny yourself. But that’s not the case entirely. Humor is of course 100% subjective, but because subversion of the expected is the core of humor all you need to really know is how to set up an experience that you can subvert in some way. Setting up the audience for a punchline is the same as weaving a narrative with a core fallacy and then exposing that fallacy. Thus, all a joke really is is preparing the listener (or the player in this case) for one thing, but then doing something else. The key to humor is making sure that that “something else” is still believable based on the context that you’ve set up otherwise all you’ve done is be random.

Beyond that, the joke itself doesn’t really matter. Usually we try to avoid being offensive, mean, gross, etc. Instead we favor jokes that are cute, whimsical, or just dumb.

This is pretty much how all humor in Dad Quest is created.

Howdy ho, Dads to be!

It is not long now until Fathers Day, and we hope that you celebrate it with us this Sunday! In the mean time, why not join us for the fourth part of the '7 Reasons to Play Dad Quest' blog series?

Today we are sharing details about the shooting range found in Mountain City Park - founded by a pig entrepreneur, you are able to take on the challenge of popping balloons to win big prizes! These prizes rotate on loading the game so there's always a chance that they may well have something interesting that you've been trying to obtain.

The prize you receive is based on the time it took for you to pop all balloons. In the image above, a new hat for your child is the reward for popping all balloons in under twenty seconds. Whereas, a Veggie sandwich is your reward if you complete the shooting gallery within 45 seconds.

Dad Quest will save your fastest times too! A vanilla Dad throwing the Child will only be so fast. However, a Child equipped with a particular toy could really speed up your time! Experiment with a variety of toys and child abilities to see which one will get you the fastest time in the shooting gallery.

Remember, over the Father's Day weekend Dad Quest will be seeing a massive 60% off to celebrate!

A fatherly hello to you all!

This is a good time to remind you that over Father's Day weekend, Dad Quest will be seeing a massive 60% discount, marking it as the lowest ever price Dad Quest has seen on Steam.

In today's '7 Reasons to Play Dad Quest' post we wanted to share details about the new customisation options which launched in Chapter 2 of Dad Quest. The Dad obviously is capable of sporting a cap and beige shorts, but the Child is a butterfly of fashion!

Starting out with the standard shorts and shirt, the Child will be able to wear an assortment of funky threads! However, these clothes will be cosmetic and offer no stat boosts or debuffs.

Some Child clothing can only be unlocked by undertaking side-quests, so keep an eye out for new opportunities to accessorise your Child. Want to learn more about side quests in Dad Quest? Check out yesterday's blog!

This has been just a quick look at the new customisation options in Dad Quest. Make sure to hop into the game this Father's Day and discover all of the cosmetic items for yourself!

Welcome to the second part of our "7 Reasons to Play Dad Quest" feature! Imagine that being said in a booming echo-y voice for gravitas. Sends shivers down your spine, right?

This is a good time to remind you that over Father's Day weekend, Dad Quest will be seeing a massive 60% discount, marking it as the lowest ever price Dad Quest has seen on Steam.

Without any further ado, let's move onto today's feature, Side Quests!

The Dad Quest is of course incredibly important - striving to become a good Dad and raise a happy Child is not only the greatest and most rewarding of quests, but also incredibly difficult. Sometimes you need to take a break from the stress of it all and sidestep away from it all.

Well let me tell you daddio, you just sidestepped into a world of opportunities. Side quests are a complimentary dashing to fill your hunger for questing. They are the chips to your fish, the corn on the cob to your chicken, The garlic bread to your pizza!

There are several Dads and Children who give the player a selection of quests. The meeting board inside Mountain City in Chapter 2 gives you details on the currently accepted quests, just in case you are a little stuck.

Some of the side quests require you to look at the environment and world in different ways. Many will provide the player with a new toy, which will help you on the main questline - but others will also help provide more substance and meaning to the world of Dad Quest.

This has been just a quick look at the side quests of Dad Quest. Make sure to hop into the game this Father's Day and discover the side quests for yourself!

Make sure to add the game to your Steam wishlist now and come back over Father's day for the 60% off discount!
