Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Giada Zavarise)

The marriage between action comics and fighting games is one that transcends mediums: an enthusiastic relationship based on love, mutual respect, and a shared passion for punching people in the face. Some licensed games, like Dragon Ball FighterZ, are played at a professional level in esport tournaments. Others, like My Hero: One’s Justice, are more simple and accessible. Some are team-based, while others are arena brawlers. All are generally good fun.

And yet, sometimes I think parser games would be better suited to adapt this genre to screen. (more…)

Fighting game championship Evo has been cancelled this year following abuse allegations against Evo co-founder and CEO Joey “MrWizard” Cuellar. Evo are ejecting him from the company and replacing him as CEO. The makers of half the games in Evo’s lineup had already pulled out of the event following the allegations, including Street Fighter gang Capcom and Mortal Kombat devs NetherRealm. Evo Online was due to run this weekend, one of the many virtual replacements for events called off due to the pandemic.

Like everything else, Evo is not going ahead as usual this year. The fighting game championships will not invade a Las Vegas resort for a weekend at the end of July, with that event now cancelled and tickets getting refunded. But Evo 2020 is evolving, and will go online this summer. It surely won’t be the same but, even as a casual spectator, I’m still well up for it.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is not supposed to be the main event at fighting game tournament Evo. But at any event like this, it s the best stories that rise to the surface. In the fighting game community of late, those stories often involve Dominique SonicFox McLean, and, when it comes to DBFZ, his rival Goichi “GO1” Kishida. This year, it was GO1 who triumphed but SonicFox didn t seem to mind one bit.

There’s another six DLC characters headed to excellent anime fighter Dragon Ball FighterZ, and (so far), only half a Goku confirmed. Announced after last night’s Red Bull-sponsored Dragon Ball FighterZ tourney finals, Arc System Works unveiled the second FighterZ pass. The first two characters – feisty lass Videl and chunky alien lad Jiren – are launching this Thursday, January 31st. The next two will be an alternate version of Broly from the recent Dragon Ball Super film and Gogeta, an alternate Goku/Vegeta fusion. The final two are yet to be unveiled. See them in action in the trailer below.

Look out. The year 2018 is going down in a storm. There are hundreds of games aboard, running, jumping, trying their best to survive the maelstrom. But there s only one tiny lifeboat, and only enough room for three games. It falls on the sorry shoulders of the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show, to decide which trio of games clamber onto the life raft and which games drown and become lost to history.

It still blows my mind that Dragon Ball FighterZ was such a hit on PC, and Arc System Works’ anime fighter gem continues to expand and grow. Today’s update is a significant one for anyone who plays regularly online – and many thousands do – as it’s adding full scheduled tournament support. Set a time, set the rules (including some clever gimmick options), invite friends and let the public fill the empty slots. Winning tournaments rewards players with trophies, too, which you can show off in virtual trophy rooms. Check out the new features in the trailer below.
