DOOM

Doom is playable on pretty much anything, from a fridge to a pregnancy test. Now it's playable on Twitter.

Thanks to new bot Tweet2Doom, Twitter users can reply to tweets with various commands to control Doom Guy and receive a video clip of the results.

That means the game can either be played collectively, by replying to others as more of a turn-based affair, or a whole sequence of inputs as a speed run.

Thatcher's Techbase is - you guessed it - about the return of Margeret Thatcher.

The Boom-compatible Doom WAD comes out on 24th September via its website on GitHub. It's free and playable on pretty much any computer hardware. There are five levels of difficulty, co-op and deathmatch.

Switch-owning fans of demon murder (who somehow still haven't played id Software's legendary Doom saga) are in luck; as part of this year's QuakeCon, id has announced a five-game Doom Slayers Collection for Nintendo's console, which is available to purchase now.

The reveal isn't too much of a surprise - US retailer Best Buy successfully managed to leak the Doom Slayers Collection for Switch earlier today ahead of its official reveal - but the game's immediate post-announcement launch most certainly was, and Switch players can now enjoy some demon-hued FPS japes all in one bundle, featuring seminal 1993 original Doom, Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom 3, and 2016's sort-of-rebooted Doom.

Notably, that's one more game than was featured in the Doom Slayers Collection for Xbox and PlayStation, which released toward the end of last year minus Doom 64 - a pleasant treat for Switch owners, based on Digital Foundry's previous enthusiasm for the port.

For some reason people seem hell-bent on porting Doom to every device on the planet - there's even a Tumblr blog dedicated to keeping up with this obsession - and the latest to get the Doom treatment is the Nintendo Game & Watch. Or its re-release version, at least.

The original Game & Watch was first released in Japan in 1980, introducing the d-pad controller and providing Nintendo with its first big commercial success. Nintendo recently re-released the handheld to celebrate Mario's 35th anniversary, and the new hardware has allowed hackers to mess around with the tech and port more games to the device.

YouTuber stacksmashing managed to get Doom running, but not without some serious compromises: he had to remove lots of textures, disable the sound, and slightly reduce the screen resolution (thanks, Kotaku). Despite all this, the game is playable, as you can see in the video below:

A new update has been released for Doom and Doom II.

Offering "QOL improvements, performance optimization, and more!", the update will be coming to all platforms, Bethesda explained on its website.

For the first time in "an official port", the original Doom renderer "has been modified to natively render 16:9 without any letterboxing", and the FOV "has been increased to reveal more image on the side instead of chopping off the top and bottom".

The Masters of Doom TV series, which was announced to be in development by James and Dave Franco's production company Ramona Films back in June, has officially found its Johns - which is to say, its John Carmack and John Romero have now been cast.

Masters of Doom is an an adaptation of author David Kushner's well-regarded 2003 biography of the same name, which charts the founding of id Software and its journey toward creating Doom, one of the most influential video games of all time.

The TV show is being written and executive produced by Tom Bissell, who not only co-wrote the book The Disaster Artist (which told the story of cult movie The Room and is now an award-winning movie), but also has writing credits on the likes of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Gears 5, and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

DOOM II

Ah, Doom 64. In the absence of a PC, my console-fuelled video game childhood was left with Doom 64. But, improbably, Doom 64 was great.

This 1997 Nintendo 64-exclusive Doom game was not a port of the original Doom, or any of the other Doom games. Nor was it meant to be the 64th Doom game (although by this point will it be?). Rather, it was a sequel developed by Midway that took place after Doom 2.

I remember Doom 64 looking fantastic to my teenage eyes, and the music was properly atmospheric. You spent a lot of time shooting demons, of course, but there was a real horror feel to the game. It felt like Doom 64 was as good as Doom could get on Nintendo's console and, as someone who hadn't played Doom before, it also felt fresh.

As if one god-awful Doom movie wasn't enough for a single lifetime, Universal has flexed fingers, delved into its unfathomable depths and proffered up a new direct-to-video film inspired by id's legendary FPS franchise. It's called Doom: Annihilation and, I dunno, it could be good?

Written and directed by Tony Giglio (Death Race 2, Death Race 3, Soccer Dog: The Movie), Doom: Annihilation is a reboot of the franchise's live-action form, meaning you probably won't need to rush out and catch up on the plot intricacies of the first Doom film to understand it.

Doom: Annihilation, as you might well imagine, follows a group of space marines as they respond to a distress call from a Martian moon base. As you might also imagine, things do not go as planned, and the team discovers the base has been overrun by demonic creatures "who threaten to create Hell on Earth". And here they are now:

John Romero has announced that Sigil, his upcoming "unofficial spiritual successor to The Ultimate Doom's fourth episode", has received a slight delay.

Sigil, which was announced on December 10th last year, in celebration of Doom's 25th anniversary, was originally anticipated to release in mid-February 2019, so around about now. It's a completely free episode (although several physical editions were available to purchase), and will include nine single-player and nine death match levels.

Notably, Sigil will be distributed as a megawad - the same special asset-bundling file format used by Doom back in 1993 - meaning that players will require a copy of the original game in order to play it. Incidentally, those Doom-less among you might like to know that The Ultimate Doom is currently discounted to 1.59 on GOG, if you're keen to prepare for Sigil's arrival.

DOOM

Legendary game maker John Romero has announced Sigil, "an unofficial spiritual successor to The Ultimate Doom's fourth episode".

The announcement comes 25 years on from 10th December 1993 - the day the original Doom launched. That's a quarter of a century ago! Just to make you feel old.

Sigil contains nine single-player and nine deathmatch levels, and will be released for free in mid-February 2019. As a megawad, you'll need the original Doom (not the remake) to play it.
