That’s it, everyone. There are no more caves to blaze. Deadpan Games’ 2017 spelunk ’em up Caveblazers received its final free expansion last Friday. The “Definitive Edition” update caps off years of roguelike dungeoneering with a rich haul of new items, daily challenges, and a new hat-crafting feature that lets you MS Paint your own cap straight into the game.

Everything is better with friends. Running. Dining. Playing roguelikes with snazzy combat and varied upgrades, even if they do have bizarrely hateful endings that are so horrendous I can’t avoid mentioning them in this first paragraph.

What I mean to say is that Caveblazers now has an online multiplayer mod, and it’s probably great. The mod also lets you enable 360 degree aiming (rather than 8-directional), and adds a command that skips the early levels and plops you straight into a shop. Just don’t fuss too hard about winning.

There are a lot of games that look like they might give me that Spelunky feeling but most of them just leave me feeling a little empty. Not Caveblazers [official site] though. Rupeck Games’ debut captures the craft and chaotic delights of Spelunky better than anything I’ve played since Spelunky itself though and it has quickly become one of my favourite roguelike platformers.

New feature! There are more new PC games released each week than any one human could realistically play, and while we try to zero in on the most interesting, many lovely things inevitably fall through the cracks. So here’s the deal: each week, I browse the teeming ranks of Steam (we’ll also be including itch.io a little later, incidentally) for ten likely prospects released within the past seven days. I play each for ten minutes, then decide whether or not I’d like to keep playing them. It’s not a review, but it is, but it isn’t, but maybe? In any case: new games for good people. That’s you, that is.
