I associate Castle Crashers [official site] with an exciting time in video games. Downloadable games were really taking off, indie games were getting a whole lot more attention (and we all thought “indie” meant anything), and our very own RPS was re-founded. In all that, teeny team The Behemoth first released Castle Crashers, a pretty, silly, and fun hand-drawn beat ‘em up (though it wouldn’t come to PC for years).

I’m always happy to write about to write about Castle Crashers, then, and especially when it’s good news like: a big free update has brought improved graphics, a new mode, and more.

A fancied up version of pretty beat ‘em up Castle Crashers [official site] is in the works, we’ve known for a while, but less clear was quite how it was coming to PC. Aye, Castle Crashers Remastered will obviously be a new standalone game on that new Xbag, but how will we lot on our Professional Cogitators receive the higher framerates and nicer textures and all that? Castle Crashers [official site] is being remastered, despite only being released… oh, eight years ago? Yeah, fair enough then. I guess The Behemoth realised that they’ve not managed to outdo themselves in the years since, so may as well try and sell us the same game again. And we’ll buy it, because Castle Crashers remains the best side scrolling co-op brawler since the days of the Mega Drive. Though, PC people will need to wait a little longer than our Xbox One counterparts.

Developers The Behemoth are responsible for Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers and most recently BattleBlock Theater. Our Marsh Davies liked the latter when he leapt about its puzzley-platformy levels back in May. He was especially fond of its narrator, so “heroically entertaining it might singlehandedly save a much lesser game than this, interjecting with exclamations that are by turns snarky, sinister and silly.”

That same voice returns in this short teaser for Behemoth’s next game, currently only known as Game 4. It seems to be set in a world plunged into chaos by a giant bear colliding with Earth. Sweet!

Staring laser eyes.

A month ago, The Behemoth announced that – after a mere four years – its co-op bashathon for the ages, Castle Crashers, would finally be getting a PC port. Naturally, I hurled an Xbox (not mine, mind you; that’d be wasteful!) out a window in glee, only to cease my celebratory smashing when I noticed a listed release date of “unknown.” Now, though, I can finally resume breaking things, because Castle Crashers has hit Steam.
