Happy Holidays, Carmafans! It’s UPDATE TIME again, plus the Carmageddons are HALF PRICE in the STEAM WINTER SALE!

To help everyone get in the festive mood, today we’re releasing Update 3 for Carmageddon: Reincarnation. And what’s Santa got for you in his bulging Update sack? Well, Santa’s pleased to announce the coming of the first TRACKED vehicle to the game! Yes, Heinz Faust is back in his updated killer ride. This new version is called the “Blitzkrieger”, and it’s got a terrifying set of tank tracks more than capable of crushing everything in its path!

And that’s not the only new vehicle to go roaring down Bleak City’s streets in… We’re also prouder than an elf with an antler down his trousers to introduce a sleek piece of classic continental metal for you to play with too, in the shape of “Shredlight”. It’s an open top racy number that sports a set of Ped-mangling teeth set into its front wings, and a vicious set of tyre-shredding wheel spinners!

Support for Vehicles with More than 4 Wheels!
In order for us to get Blitzkrieger to work, we had to add support for vehicles which had more than 4 wheels plus support for tank tracks. Go Go Modders!

New Damage!
Any damage that causes whole body deformation – things like the damage you get from Mines, Slaughter Mortar, Mine Shitting Ability and Earthquake Bomb – now includes a chance for a chassis twist! It can even happen through extreme damage, such as falling off a very tall building or very high speed impacts. Whilst fiddling in this area, we also made the Earthquake Bomb do more mine-like damage. Smashing!

Incorrectly Awarded Kill Points Improved
We’ve been making big improvements to the logic involved in figuring out who killed who, especially when there are more than two vehicles involved. Points for kills should now feel a lot fairer and incorrect reports of suicide should be improved too.

Multiplayer Toughness
We’ve been tweaking the numbers for the Offence and Defence stats for all the cars in Multiplayer. We’ve hopefully closed the gap a bit between all the different cars so that player to player damage is fairer.

Dual Core Machine Garage Freeze
In the last update we had a few reports of the Garage freezing for players using a Dual Core machine. This should now be fixed! Join us in Multiplayer over the Holiday Season to give the changes a good thrashing too!

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS
The techies have continued beavering away, and we’ve been diligently testing the results of their labours. Here’s the average results that we’re seeing by testing the Career Mode in normal gameplay conditions:

Minimum Spec
20-35% increase across the board on 720p, standard settings
15-20% increase across the board on 1080p, standard settings

Recommended Spec
50-60% increase across the board on 720p, standard settings
15-25% increase across the board on 1080p, standard settings

Please note that these results are from comparing the new build to the current Steam build (i.e. Update #1).

The latest gains have come (as before) from a lot of general optimisations and bug fixes, but the main boost has been from the first stage of multithreading the game engine – a much-needed engine upgrade that’s been in the pipeline for a long time, and is now under way. The initial stage, “decoupling the renderer” is in this update, and led to significant framerate improvements. Further multithreading work is ongoing and will result in future performance benefits.

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS

Rendering
You may notice that Carmageddon: Reincarnation looks very different from the last update! We’ve made numerous rendering improvements to give Carmageddon its sexy new look.

Peds
We’ve been improving the ped audio, they should now sound far more terrified!
The peds have been given some attention to sort out some of their dodgy behaviour.

Levels
We’ve added some extra ramps and bridges to the city levels, which should help some of the heavy vehicles navigate the rooftops.

Many of the gaps in the Snow levels have been filled in, this was done to help reduce the frustration of driving around these areas. And in the Rig Wreck level, some snagging issues on ramps have been fixed.

Multiplayer Balancing
We’ve made several tweaks and changes to car to car combat, as well as changing some of the caps on some of the PUps to make the overall multiplayer experience more balanced and fair. Offensive PUp barrels will now give you a random (offensive) PowerUp. This levels the playing field, so that more experienced players can’t go and farm the most powerful PUps.

Car Crusher Rule Changes
Car Crusher Repair and Recover costs are now far more expensive to balance the game mode.

Fox ‘n’ Hounds Rule Changes
We’ve tweaked the Fox ‘n’ Hounds rules in regards to Recovery, based on feedback we’ve been getting from the Community on how to make the MP games even more fun. Now, if you’re the Fox and you recover, either by recovering yourself or from an automatic recovery such as being flung out of the world, you will lose the Fox and it will get transferred to the player closest to you. This change eliminates the “exploit”, where a player can gain an advantage by recovering in various circumstances. (The old rules of the Fox going to the player currently last when wrecking the Fox still stands). And finally, the amount of time lost due to being wrecked in Fox n Hounds is reduced.

Wobble Recover
As a general improvement (and to avoid the Fox ‘n’ Hounds rule change leading to unfairness), you can now “Wobble Recover” at any speed, including when you are in the air! (You still need to be upside down in order to do this.)

Save Slots
There are now multiple save slots! This means you can now restart the Career should you so desire to.

Action Replay
There is a new extra slow modifier for the Camera movement in Action Replay. Press Alt + direction to use it.

Steam Controller
Good news! We have partial support for the Steam Controller, so if you have one, give it a go! The controls all work, we just haven’t set up Haptic Feedback yet.

Localisation
We’ve fixed lots of localisation bugs, especially for German and Russian.

Game Menus
We’ve been improving the overall look and feel to the Frontend menus.

PATCH LIST

  • Erroneous and non-functional profile button removed from the collectibles menu and from the Pause Menu Multiplayer Player List
  • Numerous fixes to translations, especially Russian and German
  • Stuttering and hang issues
  • Numerous bugs to do with ped behaviour
  • Tweaks to the various culling options
  • Garage lighting tweaks
  • HUD fixes for the minimap
  • Motion Blur setting wasn’t working correctly
  • The black frame around the main map wouldn’t resize itself correctly when changing the aspect ratio
  • The PowerUp Purchasing ticker text was incorrect
  • Black squares sometimes appeared when Depth of Field was turned on
  • Depth of Field tweaked
  • Dialog boxes didn’t auto fit to text
  • Respawning after being wrecked may continue to play the fire sound
  • Tweaks to camera behaviour
  • Some of the peds face and hand textures didn’t match the skin tone of their body
  • Peds could be in the wrong pose if it came to rest out of view
  • Screen Resize feature added
  • Gamma slider now works correctly
  • Music would continue when pressing alt-tab
  • Peds screams tweaked

CAREER

  • Career grid could end up with Random Car images if the car selection was set to Random in Freeplay before entering Career
  • The number of tokens owned would be reported incorrectly if an event was aborted after having picked up a token in that event
  • Career leaderboards now defaults to the friends filter instead of all
  • Fixes to credits earned in Career when restarting an event
  • Mini leaderboard in the Career was sometimes reporting an incorrect error message

MULTIPLAYER

  • Changing visual settings via the “pause” menu in multiplayer would cause the darkened screen effect to remain when returning to the race
  • Vehicle acceleration was sometimes affected in Multiplayer after a significant desync
  • Sometimes unable to join a multiplayer game when using the Steam overlay
  • Silent But Deadly is now available in Multiplayer
  • The amount of uses of offensive pups and the amount you can hold at any one time have been reduced

ACTION REPLAY

  • Extra slow modifier for the Camera movement in Action Replay

ENVIRONMENTS

  • Various light fixes within Bleak City Outskirts and Business District
  • Geometry gap in MagNuChem Reprocessor which allowed cars inside of the geometry
  • Ramps and bridges have been added to the Bleak City levels to help aid slower and heavier vehicles to navigate them
  • Concrete tank traps removed from the beach in National Park, Dusty Trails due to causing audio issues
  • Rig Wreck ramps, some snagging issues and ice cracks have been tweaked to improve gameplay


CARS

  • Towmeister retained a collision shape for his jaws even though they had been snapped off
  • Damaged car parts were sometimes in the wrong place during and after using Action Replay
  • Choosing a skin and then getting into a car wouldn’t keep the skin selection
  • Siamese Dream didn’t update its collision box properly
  • De-rimmed tyres occasionally appeared on the same hub as an undamaged one after repairing
  • Vehicles have had further optimisation
  • Edits and improvements to Crazor
  • Tweaks to the overall damage factor to make cars be less “tough”

Note that these gains have come from a whole lot of general optimisations and bug fixes. Work is continuing on fundamental changes/improvements to our core engine tech, and the very significant performance benefits of these changes will be seen in future updates.

Multiplayer
The performance improvements above combined with significant changes to the underlying MP code means that multiplayer is now far more stable.

OPTIMISATION
  • Further optimisation on car damage code
  • Added SLI/Crossfire support
  • Improved game performance for machines with low RAM
  • Fixed an issue with loading times when you have vsync turned on in the visual options
  • Reduced stuttering on low spec machines resulting in a much smoother experience
  • Improved performance when Pinball Mode PowerUp is in effect
  • The game no longer needs the KB2670838 Windows update when using Windows 7

GENERAL
  • Localisation fixes
  • Number of laps required on long routes have been reduced
  • Players should now be able to switch between APO using either the arrow keys or A and D when upgrading vehicles
  • Fixed an issue with mines exploding twice when not making contact with a target when using the Mine Shitting PowerUp
  • Cop vehicles now return to their static state on event restart and do not remain active
  • APO slots now show the correct amount available
  • Fixed caps on momentary PowerUps
  • Death Race mode would show players in the lead when they’re not
  • ‘Menage a Trois’ achievement is now unlockable
  • ‘Filled er up!’ achievement is now unlockable
  • Fixed an issue when scrolling through leaderboards
  • Fixed the ‘Car Tart’ challenge to correctly display 24 cars instead of 25
  • Fixed the ‘Hotwiring Hotstuff’ challenge to correctly display 24 cars instead of 25
  • Sound effects volume now no longer effects the engine volume which has its own slider
  • New animation effects now present on the bloody hand cursor (still not bloody though!)
  • Fixed APO bars incorrectly appearing in the garage when pressing the RT/LT triggers on a controller
  • Fixed a bug with the tutorial which meant you could get stuck when being told to go to the Stadium
  • Wheelspin is now only available when the car is travelling below 5mph
  • The game will now choose desktop resolution as the default game resolution for fresh installs (except on low end machines)

CAREER
  • Fixed a checkpoint spawn issue in the ‘Got Gas?’ Checkpoint Stampede event

MULTIPLAYER
  • Further improvements in reducing multiplayer desync and network interruption issues
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in showing no available lobbies when filtering for games with PowerUp purchasing off
  • Fixed an issue where clients can crash if the host uses the Kickstarter Eagle skin
  • The crusher on Landing Pads now correctly continues to work after a network interruption
  • Players should no longer get spawned under the crusher on the Landing Pads arena
  • PowerUp gift timer no longer counts into negative numbers
  • Fixed playlist to correctly show the current event to be played for clients

AI
  • During Fox N Hounds the AI will now correctly run away from other opponents when they have the Fox instead of continuing to chase the player.
  • AI APO now correctly reflects the players progress

ACTION REPLAY
  • Pressing NumPad 0 now correctly toggles playback direction
  • Left mouse button is now used to freely move the camera orientation when using the Placeable Cam mode
  • Unlocked camera is now default when using the Placeable Cam mode

ENVIRONMENTS
  • Fixed a gap in the geometry in the Bleak City Business District level
  • Fixed collision issue with a ramp in the Bleak City Business District which caused you to get trapped inside
  • Fixed a hole in the geometry in the Dusty Trails National Park level
  • Fixed geometry gaps in the stadium on the Bleak City Business District level
  • Audio fixed when inside caves and tunnels
  • Storm light on Grey's Mall now made more "magnificent"
  • Fixed missing reverb audio in the lower parts of the ship on Magnuchem Reprocessor level

  • Pedestrians no longer spawn under the crusher on Landing Pads arena

CARS

  • Fixed an issue with your car being damaged if stationary when getting the Mutant Tail PowerUp
  • Manual recover when on slopes is now possible
  • Tez Eagle blade animation now correct
  • Skins can now be previewed first before being applied to your car
  • Tropi-kill no longer maintains collision body on roof after roof items removed
  • Fixed collision body on the rear of the Plow
  • Fixed collision body on spinning blade on The Bear after it’s been removed
  • Frozen opponents effect now applies to cop cars
  • Tropi-kills turbine visual effects now longer continue to play once the turbines are detached
  • Rim choice now also transfers to multiplayer games
  • Razorbill no longer maintains collision body when it’s wheels have been removed
  • The windows of The Plow now correctly smash
  • Fixed an issue with some Kickstarter backers not unlocking the Kickstarter exclusive skins and rims correctly
  • Improved the ability for the Subpressor to chase you
  • Improved the brightness of vehicle headlights so they are not too bright

CARMODGEDDON
  • Mods for CarMODgeddon now use the extension .ZIP rather than .ZAD
  • .TDX files are now working correctly for mods when using CarMODgeddon

In 1997, a videogame was released that caused establishment scandal and media hysteria around the world. Banned in some countries, censored in others, and even condemned by a Pope, overnight it became the poster child for everything that’s wrong in society… and therefore right in a videogame.



The game was CARMAGEDDON. For a generation of gamers coming to the end of a decade of 2D, wireframe, and corridor combat, it was an awesome introduction to the concept of the “real” 3D open world, do-whatever-the-feck-you-like, chuck-out-the-rulebook-and-just-BE-STUPID gameplay. And in doing so it also introduced the gaming world to the whole concept of realistic physics and real-time dynamic damage. What’s more, it was the FUNNIEST GAME EVER.

As part of the thrust towards the full release of Carmageddon: Reincarnation on 21st May, we have been running multiplayer lobbies every weekday night and inviting the Carmageddon community to join us in some @ss kicking Carmageddon FUN!

The lobby is active from 5pm to 6pm BST on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and is hosted by Stainless Games resident Carmageddon car crushing star SAM. The lobby is transmitted on the Carmageddon Twitch TV channel, and if you can’t join in the game, then join in the Twitch chat and hurl some abuse at Sam!

Hey there Carmafans, it's competition time!

There’s just 3 weeks to go till the 21st May, when Carmageddon: Reincarnation gets its full release on Steam! And with the recent Big Beta Update now out there in the wild, we thought we’d give you all the opportunity to win some cool PRIZES for having FUN playing the GAME!

Using the Action Replay feature, we want you to record a clip showing your funniest Carmageddon moments. Whether it be Pelvic Thrusting Screwie through the side of Cleaver, or firing an Anvil salvo into a CU:NT, we want you to make us wet ourselves laughing and in doing so you might be in for a chance at winning some awesome Carmageddon goodies! Clips should last no longer than 30 seconds, and you can submit as many entries as you like.

What goodies you ask? For the winner there’ll be an awesome poster signed by n0bby and the gang, a t-shirt of your choice from the Official Carmageddon store and we'll also throw in a bunch of other Carma related treats including a set of Smelly Bushes!
