Best Strategy Games 2020

Looking back at it now, 2020 doesn’t feel like a banner year for strategy games, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been a few gems. The list below – gathered by a panel of experts and regularly updated – contains games from as recently as 12 months ago alongside classics from as far back as 28 years ago. They’re all games we think you could play and love right now.

For a time it looked as though strategy games had sunk into a kind of deathly malaise, unsure which territory to claim next and which ones it should leave well and truly alone. You’ll ocassionally find someone on the internet sounding off about how the strategy genre is dead. If you see such a person in the future, send them this list of the best strategy games ever made.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Nic Reuben)

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada II, a slightly flabby spaceship smashing strategy than I nonetheless had a great time with, gets a big dose of daemonic evil today in the form of a new campaign featuring everyone’s favourite spiky chaps. No, not hedgehogs you silly goose! Chaos! Them with the skin peeling and possession and giant psychic tears in space time and that. A fine bunch. Avert your heretical eyes from whatever blas you’re currently pheming, and take a look at the trailer below:

What’s the point of a Warhammer game (40k or otherwise) if you can’t smash irresponsibly large armies together, just to watch them burn? Today, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 added a new Massive Fleet skirmish mode as part of a big update. Developers Tindalos Interactive say that it’s inherently unbalanced – the game was never made for encounters on this scale – but it sure is nice to look at, and potentially a lot of fun. The new mode even allows players to casually mess around with Titan-class vessels. Below, a developer stream showing off some of these big, daft battles.

Once bitten, twice shy, is not a good aphorism for zombies. They’re not very shy at all>. In fact, some of them are positively bold. They’ve wreaked havoc with this week’s Steam Charts, taking over nearly half the entries. Which, admittedly, saves me thinking up a bunch of other stupid shit to write.

Yes, click through, read on, for the bunch of stupid shit I did> write.

A fourth campaign and dirty gert fleets are in the works for Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2, which officially launched today, though the first post-launch priority is to, ah, finish its cooperative mode. Right now that’s officially classed as “in an early access state”, basically due to running out of time, with the polished and de-bugged mode expected to follow in a few months. Beyond that, they’re looking at adding a new mode with huge fleets, tweaking balance, and so on. While the unfinished co-op is a bummer, considering Armada II is otherwise pretty decent for spacechurches and meatships blowing each other to heck in an eternal futurewar, the additions sound good.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. This is a lie, of course. There s also fancy hats, for example. I know this because I ve seen the admirals of Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 wearing them while they command their giant space cathedrals to do a murder at other giant space cathedrals, in a sequel that veers fairly close to the original, but with some vastly updated visuals, and some surprisingly gripping storytelling.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 is almost here – due on January 24th – and the space-naval strategy sequel looks to be a tad bigger and more ambitious than its predecessor. In the very seriously narrated info-dump trailer below (it sounds like the man is speaking in ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME), it lays out what its new single-player side entails. While there are twelve playable factions, the story side of the game contains just three campaigns – Imperial, Necron & Tyranid – though each has their own distinct systems and even narrative style. Take a look at the shape of ships to come below.
