Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan - kingzembla35

Without language, without negotiation, most creatures are subject to a toxic relationship: dominate or be dominated.

Communicating ideas is hard, being understood is even harder. The human race, or more precisely the human brain, has worked over thousands of generations to build its language capacity, its ability to persuade without violence, its ability to... negotiate.

Without language, without communication, without negotiation, there is no cooperation.

[Negotiation is one of the elements that sets humans apart from animals. It is one of the evolutions that has lifted humanity out of barbarism/plunder to pave the way for diplomacy, trade, and exchange

We live in a time that gives us the illusion that it has always been easy to talk to each other. But if you have ever raised a 2-year-old child, or if you have been in a relationship, you know how untrue that is.

The beauty behind the scientific miracle of communication

When we zoom in on the human brain, in this bundle of neurons, we realize how miraculous communication is. A series of electrical and chemical signals form an idea, this idea is converted into sounds through movements of the tongue, air expelled from the lungs, and our larynx emitting a voice. Another human being receives these sounds through their eardrum, decoding the words, isolating them from ambient noise, and their neurons must produce electrical and chemical signals to visualize and understand the original idea.
And as if that weren't complex enough, the recipient's brain evaluates its interest and survival based on the idea it received. It must also combine what it hears with body language, etc.

If we zoom in on the details, two beings negotiating are performing a very complex operation that represents the culmination of millions of years of known evolution. We experience this miracle every day without appreciating its exceptional nature (We have too many bills to pay that hide paradise from us 😅)
In creating Aurion, we wanted to reconnect humans to the extraordinary aspect and true power of negotiation.

Let the symbolism in our universe awaken the sacred sense that everyday life causes us to lose.

Aurion is the energy that channels the ambitions of all living beings. Beyond physical combat, Aurion reacts to negotiations where each being tries to convince the other of their point of view.
In volume 9, we can see the king of Zama negotiating with the notable Bilandil.

Each of them gathers their Aurion to defend their point of view by "vibrating" the best of themselves. Writing this scene was difficult and exciting. We had to illustrate for the first time the vibratory aspect of our civilization, but also build the dialogue like a verbal joust that exploits the laws of military strategy.

To negotiate, some humans will speak from their hearts to convince through intensity, they are like infantry knights. Enkwo is in this category, charging with his passion that almost shakes Bilandil for a moment. Others are like archers who send distant arguments without exposing themselves emotionally too much like Bilandil does at the beginning of the discussion.

The infantryman then protects himself with the shield of his convictions. And when an archer fails to hit a knight with his arrows, he quietly approaches to strike a dagger blow in the weak point of the armor.
It is through this analogy that Bilandil pushes Enkwo to lose his calm and the king of Zama distracts his honor Aurion.

If Bilandil and Enkwo illustrate the verbal joust of negotiation, Ewineh's intervention was supposed to show something else. Ewineh observes the two Aurionics clash and end up at an impasse. And here we come to the most powerful aspect of negotiation: consensus.

Consensus involves allowing everyone to win what is most important to them by sacrificing some of their raw objectives. This frees us from the cycle of domination/submission to enter cooperation. Nothing in this scene is random. The consensus emerges from a sincere intention to make everyone win. It is the ability to understand the vibrations of both parties and find their common ground.
It is a symbol that we wanted to leave to the readers to inspire them for their real life.

When you have to negotiate, try to be Ewineh in the room as much as possible if your basic arguments lead to a deadlock. It is a difficult path that requires stepping back. Ewineh was able to do this because she had perspective on the original conflict. The most beautiful evolutions of humanity have occurred when we have broken cycles of domination/submission through cooperation.

Negotiation is one of the key pillars for cooperation.

We hope that reading Aurion will inspire you to be a better human who cooperates.

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan - honla

In reality, the very essence of power shapes the destiny of nations. Influential figures, or let’s say “Leaders”, stand as architects of hope (or despair?) everywhere in the world. No matter the race, the country, the community, our need for leadership is like a divine (or devil?) algorithm printed in humanity DNA.
Leaders wield a force which catalyze not just our expectations and dreams, but also the very fabric of our collective fate: When peoples of power interact with each other’s or when they interact with us (the nation), we enter in the sacred field of politics.
But what truly fascinates us in today’s newsletter, is how powerful individuals’ challenge and influence each other. What unfolds in such situations?
There's something both mathematical and mysterious in the negotiations, discussions, debates, and exchanges among people aware of the weight of their decisions, and this is something that has deeply inspired us in "Aurion."

A lot of very good pop culture stories have depicted the ugly and the sacred of Politics. Take, for instance, "Dune," with the matriarchal sect called the "Bene Gesserit" striving to manipulate bloodlines to shape and potentially control humanity “For the greater good”.
Or the dramatic odyssey of the (anti) hero Paul Atreides, who seeks to save humanity by genociding a huge part of it. A paradoxical question emerging on the way of every politic leader:
How many bad is justifiable to make the greater good in the end?

One scene that particularly struck me as an author is in the movie "Lincoln" from Spielberg: When Lincoln discusses the freedom of slaves with the character played by Tommy Lee Jones in a cellar.

These two men, bearing the opportunity to abolish slavery, must reach a consensus that goes against their native conflicts. They are from opposite party (Republicans/Democrats), but they must trust each other to advance their common cause.
When you're in such a position of power, like Lincoln, who must abolish slavery, or Mandela, who must face South African President Frederik de Klerk, who stole his life for 20 years, you hold the fate of an entire people and you have to think beyond your own values, your own bias, your own suffering for the greater good. It’s…. fascinating.

Aurionic Palaver: The Art of Ideological Discourse in Aurioma

As gaming studio we wanted to offer our own symbolic view of this “sacred field of politics” with an African approach. And that’s what we have done in our universe Aurion.
The Aurionic energy is a spiritual force that shapes the world and it obeys only to those with the greatest beliefs. When one Aurionic confronts another, it's the winner existential voice that prevails over the global Aurion (or global consciousness).
In the first 8 volumes of the Aurion Graphic Novel, we've emphasized how ideological clashes manifest in combat with special effects, transformation, magic, sword etc.

Naturally the Aurion has also real impact in politics in our universe.
In fact, on the planet Aurioma, most ideological clashes are resolved not through combat (Otherwise, it wouldn't be a civilization), but through discussions and debates. This is what we called "Aurionic Palaver."
When two individuals engage in discussion, expressing their thoughts, the strongest Aurionic vibration prevails, or at least influences, the other.
For example, in Volume 9, when the king of Zama must address the Council of the city of Isao, Enkwo doesn't get what he wants (which was rather normal as his request was quite unrealistic).
When he's about to be escorted out of the throne room, he reacts violently, intervenes, and triggers his Aurion to shout his truth to the world.

And when he shouts from his soul, from his whole being, he influences others who begin to consider his point of view. This is the political influence of an Aurion in the end! When an Aurion vibrates strongly, it imposes its convictions on its surroundings and it can reshape the power of a political world.

The Aurionics and their Influences: The Heartbeat of Our World

When we speak about influence, finally It all comes back to that vibration.
What do I feel from the other person facing me? Do I feel a part of myself? Do I feel something that I would like to be?
And, when the king of Zama expresses all that he is, and the dignitaries begin to lean in his favor, King Mankara, who is not a great warrior, stands up and as an enlightened sovereign, retorts with who he is.
We thus discover that the integrity of the Mankara far surpasses the honor of the Kori-Odan. What's beautiful about this scene is that we indeed see two powerful people expressing who they are and the influence it has on others.
And it's a symbol of what we believe to be the quintessence and the art behind politics and leadership.

Be aware of the “romantization” trap of leadership and politics
The Volume 9 of Aurion shows the existential beauty between two people who vibrate at their extremes and who ultimately challenge, respect, and impose their view on each other and their surroundings.
Thanks to the artists, it’s really something to the eyes and the herat when you read the full volume. BUT it raises the question of those who are influenced by those leaders, what is their choice?
When finally, two all-powerful leaders enter a room and come out deciding on war or peace, what freedom is there for those who were around, who, for example, found themselves crushed, influenced by these auras, by these vibrations?

So here we are, and these are precisely all these reflections that will be developed in volumes 9, 10. You can discover our Aurion Story in Graphic on Amazon/Kindle here : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZTYV22C

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan - kingzembla35

Religion (or spirituality) is one of the most beautiful things that connects us to the divine and the sacred, but alas, it's also often the source of abuse and control by ill-intentioned people.

So as humans, how can we be sure that we're staying on the right track in our quest for the divine and the sacred, in the face of all the spiritual swindling that's going on in this world?

As a gaming studio, we don't claim to have the ultimate answer to this lifelong quest and there are better theological experts from different backgrounds dedicated to it.

However, when we were building the Aurion universe we focused our lore on the human's existential quest. In a classic Fantasy universe, people obtain powers by training, by prophecy, or by gathering sacred powers/artifacts in sacred places. In the Aurion energy, power is directly connected to your capacity to answer the question “Who Am I”?

The more you know who you are, the more your convictions channel the existential particles in the universe and that’s how you assemble your Aurion.
With this in mind, it was inevitable to dive into the religious and spiritual questions in our world. We decided to show the dichotomy between the positive and negative sides of religion/spirituality.

The good side of religion/spirituality: Connecting us to the Truth and essence of things.

One example of the positive aspect of religion/spirituality can be seen during the Kori-Odan wedding scene, where the 4 notables are positioned like 4 pillars around our heroes.

Unlike a lot of real-life weddings where there is often only one priest representing a monotheist deity (and authority), in the city of Zama and many other tribes of Aurion Universe, humans believe (in fact they feel) that all cycles (nature, marriage, life) will need 4 winds to be sustainable. Four winds represent the four poles (north, East, South, West) or others aspects of Harmony.

What we wanted to show there is that religion and spirituality may give the best when they are like a game of symbols organized to remind us of the “wisdom” of the Creation and why we should understand the balance of the sacred to mimic it in our life.

There are of course other aspects to this relationship with harmony and the surrounding cosmos, that you can find in Aurion. Every page and every screenshot has a symbol for something (funny or serious) that we invite readers, players to “decode”.

The bad and the Ugly of religion/spirituality: Giving control of your life to the wrong people.

Religion itself is not the problem, but some people will use it to abuse others. In Aurion, you can see an example when our heroes arrive in Isao's city and meet the false prophet who exploits the desperation of the citizens during an economic crisis.

This false prophet sees it as a business to make money, he explains that “hope” is a commodity that people want and that he offers. For him, people don’t want the truth if the truth is not “nice”, so he gives them what they ask (A B2C entrepreneur!).

Of course, our heroes will respond to that and fight him to stop the spiritual scam, but in real life, there are a lot of humans caught in vicious spiritual exploitation cycles.

I remember my grandmother speaking about couples who were broken when she was young because of the catholic versus protestant church competitions. It was a real thing 80 years ago. Some families were broken because of these inter church fights. Let’s not even talk about men enslaving women in a lot of places in the world because of religious justification.

The melody of possibilities

This is just a glimpse of our religious analysis in our universe that goes much further than that. We have built a whole cosmogony that goes back over 5,000 years.

In the PC game, there is a discussion of the griot ENIKI SOULEYRIS, who explains the origin of life in our universe, and how this is strangely linked to the heroes' quest, or the Aurion itself, which is ultimately a force that reacts only to the quest for who we are and to the relationship with the human soul.
That is to say, in our universe, religion/spirituality is more oriented towards the soul reaching its full potential than towards divinities and human prophets.

And somewhere along the line, as creators, we have the intuition and feeling that this focusing on the soul-sacred quest, is a path that, without being a guarantee or better than others, can perhaps inspire and help us stay connected to the sacred and divine within ourselves.

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan - kingzembla35
If you are born in the '80s-90s, your childhood was probably filled with symbols of "good" and the "power of love and friendship" (Thanks Disney).

But when you started to move to adulthood, you have probably been shocked by the "reality" of the world: The violence, the selfishness, the law of the "strongest", the sad death of a kind and naïve people when they faced bad people around you.

But when you started to move to adulthood, you have probably been shocked by the "reality" of the world: The violence, the selfishness, the law of the "strongest", the sad death of kind and naïve people when they faced bad people around you.

A lot of us picked a team on the road:
- "Team cynical": Often calling them "Team pragmatic" depending on the level of cynism the have. The more extrem cynicals peoples believe that "Well if the world is a pure hell, let's be the King of Evil. It's me against all of you"
- "Team Idealist": Often calling them "Team positivity" depending on the level of savior complex. Their conclusion was "Everything will end well if we keep doing good around us, every one can become good". And they often end up with a lot of desillusions.

And there is a lot of subteams that I can't list here: team I don't care, team I care too much, team ect. And I am even sure that we are all members of at least 3 to 5 teams depending on the day.

Since I was a kid, I was asking if there was not a "Team Truth".
I was always asking what is the Truth in all those paths. Which of those extreme paths is really leading to better results for most of us?

I realized that all those paths are in fact part of the only path.
That our race, the human race may have been created only for the purpose of testing and combining all those approaches of Life until we find the Harmony.

And that's where cooperation is the only key.
Being pragmatic is a good thing at the right timing.
Being Positive and indealist is also a good thing at the right timing.

No one can "feel" the right timing alone.
We always need someone else on the other side of the labyrinth that we can trust.

We are not competing to find the better path, we have to cooperate to get out of the same labyrinth.

This dilemma is one of the core sources of inspiration in our Fantasy World Aurion. In the Aurion, there are no good vs Evils, no prophecy, no Chosen Ones. Only an existential war between all the human spiritual diversity trying to find... the "Truth".

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan - kingzembla35
In the epic world of Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan, the clash between honor and misogyny is vividly portrayed in the fight between Naober Koross and Enkwo Kori-Odan. This battle serves as a powerful metaphor for the struggle between these two concepts in everyday life.

Honor is a fundamental value that lies at the core of human character. It encompasses personal ethics, such as honesty, compassion, valor, and chivalry. In Aurion, honor is exemplified by Enkwo Kori-Odan, who embodies these virtues and fights for justice and righteousness.

On the other hand, misogyny represents a deep-seated prejudice and hatred towards women. It manifests in various forms, from sexist comments and objectification to more extreme acts of violence. In Aurion, misogyny is personified by Naober Koross, who embodies the oppressive and discriminatory attitudes towards women.

The fight between Naober Koross and Enkwo Kori-Odan symbolizes the clash between honor and misogyny. It represents the struggle between good and evil, justice and oppression. Enkwo’s unwavering commitment to honor and his respect for women stand in stark contrast to Naober’s misogynistic beliefs.

This battle serves as a reminder of the importance of honor in our everyday lives. Just as Enkwo fights for justice and equality, we must strive to uphold honor in our interactions with others. By treating everyone with respect, dignity, and fairness, we can combat misogyny and create a more inclusive society.

From a woman’s perspective, honor represents a sense of dignity, self-worth, and empowerment. It is about being treated with respect and having one’s voice heard. Honor allows women to stand up against misogyny and fight for their rights. It is a powerful force that can inspire change and promote gender equality.

Misogyny, on the other hand, undermines women’s sense of self-worth and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. It restricts their freedom and limits their opportunities for growth and success. Women who experience misogyny may feel marginalized, silenced, or objectified. It is important to challenge these attitudes and create a society where women are valued for their contributions.

In conclusion, Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan explores the themes of honor and misogyny through its compelling characters and their epic battles. The fight between Naober Koross and Enkwo Kori-Odan serves as a powerful metaphor for the struggle between these two concepts in everyday life. By upholding honor and rejecting misogyny, we can work towards a more just and equitable society.

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan - kingzembla35
As gamers, we tend to embody beings who start out as weak, and who over combats, face enemies and lead battles that from the start seemed impossible to win. This creates a great sense of idealism in us.

But!!! Once we get out of there, we face the harshness of life and ‘‘realism’’ that the world throws in our faces, which creates in us a kind of dissonance that we constantly seek to balance. No longer knowing where begins Realism and where idealism and honor end.

The game therefore depicts a conflict between honor and realism, two values which are embodied by two main characters of the game : Enzo (Enkwo) and his ju'u (master) Nama Yode.

• Enzo (Enkwo) is an idealistic and optimistic hero, who believes in justice, freedom and fraternity between people. He is guided by his honor, which requires him to respect his commitments, to protect the innocent and to fight evil.

But his idealism borders on utopia and even naivety. Knowing nothing other than his peaceful and sweet city of Zama, he is brutally confronted with the reality of the "outside world" and will face its harshness and the titanic challenges that his rank as King of Zama implies. And his master Nama yode will make it clear to him.

• Nama Yode, on the contrary, is an Aurionic master who has renounced her candor to access a higher level of power. She embodies realism which is one of the primary socles in the Yode clan, that is to say objective and rational knowledge of the world.

For her it is necessary to take things for what they are and not for what we think they are (difficult to do, right !?).

She considers that honor is a luxury that only those who have the means to keep it can afford. So one must be strong, very strong in the face of adversity to claim it. Through her power she wants to impose her ideal on the whole world, and she believes that there is no right way to get there, there is only the way that wins.

The game thus offers a reflection on the meaning of life, on the choice between the ideal and the real, between faith and skepticism. The player is led to question his own values, what constitutes his dignity and his greatness of soul.
The game also shows that honor and realism are not necessarily incompatible, but that they can complement and reinforce each other.

Enzo (Enkwo) learns throughout his adventure to be realistic, to recognize his limits and his errors, to accept the complexity of the world and its geopolitical issues. Nama Yode, for her part, teaches her student that his honor is sure a beautiful thing, but it must be sublimated with a layer of realism, this to cultivate pragmatism, in order to be able to face evil without ever losing the light that shines in his soul.

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan - Jaurel WANJI
When we grow up, almost all of us find ourselves having to choose between our education or drastic change in order to adapt and survive. In the Aurion universe, we wanted to highlight this moral dilemma through Enkwo's battle against Ngarba.

On one side, we have Enkwo, who embodies the honour that drives him to preserve traditions and defend ancestral values for the collective good. On the other, we have Ngarba, who embodies the Revolution, representing the urgency of change and the sacrifice of the past for the survival of the group.

(Enkwo versus Ngarba in the PC game)

This very first major battle in Aurion: The Legacy of the Kori-Odan sees much more than two Aurionics and their swords clashing. This battle symbolises the confrontation between honour and revolution.

The newly crowned King Enkwo is as devoted to his cause as he is doubtful of his ability to rise to the occasion. Faced with Ngarba's attack, Enkwo feels a mixture of courage and integrity, but also a need to prove his legitimacy. These feelings are transmuted into his Aurion when he gathers his Aurionic base, the Honour of the Kori-Odan.

(Enkwo performing the "Honour of the Kori-Odan" in PC game and in the graphic novel)

Ngarba is carried along by the fire of anger at seeing his people driven into the wall by a king with no knowledge of the outside world. He is not seeking a crown just for the pleasure of being king. His coup d'état was more an act of education for the people of Zama (hence the importance for him not to kill any citizens during his putsch).

He had travelled outside Zama and seen the cruelty of the world and knew that if this cruelty reached the gates of his city, the city would be lost. His revolution should be a wake-up call, enabling Zamians to come to terms with the reality of the world and its ills. His experience can be compared to Itachi's one in Naruto (more on that in a later article).

(Ngarba carrying out "the revolution")

The fight between Enkwo and Ngarba transcends simple swordplay, and is in fact the manifestation of the existential war in the Aurion.

(the ancestor who questions himself during the fight)
We are facing an Aurionic dialogue where two people who want the best for their community are fighting while talking to each other, but ironically, the nature and motivations of each prevent them from listening to each other. Makes you think, doesn't it?

Which choices do you generally make? Between Honour and Revolution, which do you lean towards for the good of those you love? We'd love to know in the comments.

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan - Jaurel WANJI
Humanity key resources (gold, oil, etc.) are sources of wealth and prosperity, but the paradox is that they are also sources of conflict. We wanted to highlight this paradox in our game through aurionite.

(Aurionite emerging at the surface)

In the fantasy world of Aurion, a mysterious and powerful material called Aurionite emerges from the crystallisation of aurion, a spiritual energy that permeates the earth and gushes out in the form of magnificent stones. These gems are the source of many wonders and problems for the inhabitants of Aurioma.

The Hekimas, enlightened craftsmen, have mastered the art of extracting Aurionite from the bowels of the earth and shaping it. They can channel and purify aurion energy, awakening the potential of every stone they touch.

(Hekimas in front of their workshop)

Aurionite mining is the most important industry on the planet Aurioma, propelling the continent of KAH-ISAO to the pinnacle of power thanks to its extraction mines. However, this wealth has led to some worrying excesses.

Greed for this rock has led to human exploitation in the mines, overexposure to Aurion's energies, overexploitation of the soil, environmental degradation and the proliferation of counterfeit products.
The quality of Aurionite varies according to a number of factors, including its original environment, crystal purity, age and alloy. However, the most decisive factor is the craftsmanship of the Hekima who work it.
The purity of the light emanating from an Aurionite, its physical durability and, above all, its durability in use are essential criteria for judging the craftsman's work.

On Aurioma, almost everyone uses Aurionites in their daily lives: housewives for their household chores, farmers to improve their crops, breeders for the health of their animals, and artists to enhance their art.

(Different uses of aurionite)

However, the sector where Aurionite is most ubiquitous is warfare. The weapons and armour of Aurionic warriors are strengthened by this stone, giving these fighters extraordinary abilities.
Aurionic warriors and shamans use Aurionites to stabilise and channel their Aurion, enabling them to effectively manifest phenomena or elemental energy during confrontations.
As warriors and shamans use up their Aurionites, they become depleted, forcing these powerful fighters to replace them regularly to maintain their strength.

(Selecting aurionites in the game to change the texture of the hero's armour)

Faced with this growing dependence, some Hekimas set out to find ways of processing Aurionite in a more sustainable way, while preserving the ancestral traditions of their craft.
A struggle for the conservation of Aurion and the Aurioma ecosystem is emerging, seeking a balance between the magical power of Aurionite and the preservation of nature.

Aurionite remains a fascinating enigma, a symbol of the power and spirituality that unites the people of Aurioma, while confronting them with profound ethical and environmental dilemmas.

Beyond its role in political and military affairs, Aurionite also embodies the hope of preserving the balance between living beings and the spiritual energies that animate them.
