Free-to-play squad tactics game Atlas Reactor is the next on 2019’s already dark-stained chopping block. Announced today, Trion Worlds have shut off all premium purchasing options in the game, and made everything available through play until the servers shut down on June 28th. They’re straightforward and candid about the reason for shutting it down, saying that “Despite the support of this great group of fans, Atlas Reactor never grew big enough to fund its continued development”. It’s always sad to see another game go dark, especially one as distinct as this.

“If Frozen Synapse and Battlerite had a baby, it would bear an uncanny resemblance to Atlas Reactor,” said Matt Cox, which reminds me that I’m grossly failing in my duties as his self-appointed moral guardian. I should have given that young lad the ‘copulation’ talk years ago. But if you’re interested in tactical team combat played out through simultaneous turns, you might be interested to hear that developers Trion World have chucked a uey — again — and turned Atlas Reactor [official site] free-to-play. This switch comes alongside the launch of a new season with a new character. … [visit site to read more]

If Frozen Synapse and Battlerite had a baby, it would bear an uncanny resemblance to Atlas Reactor. Think turn-based MOBA-style combat with an emphasis on predicting and responding to your opponent’s next move. If you re not sure what MOBA-style combat really means, have no fear: Atlas Reactor is a unique creature, and experience with its genre-spanning inspirations won t give you much of a competitive edge. It certainly hasn t for me.

Atlas Reactor [official site], the simultaneous-turn-based multiplayer action game from Trove and Rift developers Trion Worlds, is now out. It’s a 4v4 murdersport with MOBA-ish freelancers an- wait, no, come back. Contrary to what the odd and incoherent style might suggest, it’s not Another Half-Arsed MOBA. No, Atlas Reactor is turn-based action where all players’ moves play out at once, in that Frozen Synapse sort of way. Anyway, you can see for yourself, as it does have an extended demo-ish ‘Free Mode’.

Trion Worlds’ upcoming tactical combat PvP bonanza Atlas Reactor [official site] is now in open beta. The game’s a simultaneous turn-based strategy twist on the trendy arena shooter. Players choose their actions during “Decision Mode” before watching how everything plays out in subsequent “Resolution Mode”. Rather than reacting to your opponents in real time, you have to predict their movements before hand, giving Atlas Reactor more of a cerebral feel. It’s a bit like Frozen Synapse, but with a colorful cast of cartoon fighters and robo-puppies.

Earlier this year, Trion Worlds invented a revolutionary new business model for their turn-based tactical combat game Atlas Reactor [official site]. They called it “buy-to-play“, meaning that players would buy the game then get to play it. What a wild bunch! Where do they get these ideas from? A few months later, it seems they’re maybe concerned they were a bit too ‘out there’. The Trove and Rift devs have announced that Atlas Reactor will also have a ‘Free Mode’ letting everyone play with a rotating limited selection of characters for free. But what should we call this model?

Tactical fireworks.

Atlas Reactor [official site] has chucked a uey and will launch under a revolutionary new model named “buy-to-play”, abandoning previous free-to-play plans. (Reminder: Atlas Reactor is the multiplayer turn-based tactical combat game with simultaneous turns, made by Trion Worlds, them lot behind the Minecraftbut Trove and MMORPG Rift.) The developers say that ideas they had to build a sustainable business model for Atlas Reactor under free-to-play would ruin the game’s fun so… they won’t.
