Among Us

became a surprise smash hit in 2020. The hidden-role murder ’em up was originally released in 2018, and managed to burst its way to fame late last year thanks in large part to lots of Twitch streamers. Alas, this success brought with it a fair few challenges for the developers at Innersloth. Yesterday, they released a dev blog explaining why development and updates have been taking so long, and telling fans a bit about what’s been going on behind the scenes.

Yesterday, Xbox Game Pass for PC got a couple of tasty additions to it’s already very good lineup of games. Everyone’s favourite new smash-hit murder ’em up Among Us has joined the party, along with RPS faves Monster Train and Wilmot’s Warehouse.

There’s a bunch more too, including The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan. Plenty to keep us all busy over the winter holidays then. (Or rather, plenty to distract me from playing the two giant new RPGs I don’t think I’ll ever finish.)

A group of sus spacemen posing in Among Us artwork.

Innersloth gave us all a first proper look at their upcoming Among Us map, The Airship, at The Game Awards last night. Get ready to murder your pals on a big red plane, complete with ladders and floating platforms on which to make your escape. It’s no spaceship or abandoned research station, but I still wouldn’t wanna be trapped on it with some killer spacemen. It’s arriving early next year, bringing new skins and tasks too.

“Yes”, is the likely answer to this question. I don’t need to put you through all the “developed by Innersloth games, Among Us became a sensation in 2020, two years after its release” stuff because you already know it all thanks to the ludicrous amount of attention this game has received post-Twitch and YouTube fame.

Among Us

has had a bit of a hacking problem since its sudden explosion in popularity. Fortunately, developers Innersloth are on the case. While today’s update is a small one adding just a few small fixes and features, the patch notes have revealed plans to bring an accounts system into the game by the end of the year, along with a new map that’s set to be the game’s biggest yet.

Last weekend, Among Us was experiencing the highest of highs, with hundreds of thousands of eyes watching US congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez face off against both streamers and a fellow politician in the spacey stab ’em up. Unfortunately for developers Innersloth, however, it didn’t take long for that high to come crashing down. This week saw a seemingly massive spam attack strike Among Us’ servers, locking up matches with threatening messages in what appears to be a far unfriendlier form of political activism.

Over the past month, space espionage game Among Us has gotten astronomically popular. Too much so for its own good, it seems, after facing overloaded servers and now the unavoidable rash of cheaters and hackers known to arrive in even the most mildly competitive games. Innersloth say they’re working on multiple solutions to combat jerks and hackers.
