American Truck Simulator

American Truck Simulator players eager to hit the road in search of new horizons can now get a 20-minute taste of the superb sim's upcoming Wyoming expansion in a new gameplay video.

Wyoming will be the eighth world-expanding DLC to release for American Truck Simulator since its launch back in 2016 (following on from Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Idaho, and last year's Colorado), bringing its state count up to a total of ten once the base game's California and Nebraska are factored in - meaning SCS Software will officially be one fifth of the way through its recreation of the US on Wyoming's arrival.

"Wyoming may be one of the least populated states in the US," SCS explained previously, "but that doesn't mean that it lacks spectacular places to visit and see. Home to some of the country's most breathtaking national parks, Wyoming is best known for its red-walled gorges, hot springs, historic prairie towns, pioneer history, and historical attractions."

There's barely been time to admire the sweeping vistas of Colorado, but American Truck Simulator is already speeding to its next stop, with developer SCS today announcing Wyoming as the next US state to be getting the expansion treatment.

"Home to some of the country's most breathtaking national parks, " explains SCS in its announcement post, "Wyoming is best known for its red-walled gorges, hot springs, historic prairie towns, pioneer history, and historical attractions."

To accompany its Wyoming reveal, SCS has shared the briefest of video teasers, offering a peak at just some of the bison-related sights in store for those readying themselves for more hypnotically zen-like hauling across American Truck Simulator's newest state.

Fans of American Truck Simulator's wonderfully chilled trundling will have a whole new state to explore next Thursday, 12th November, with the arrival of developer SCS' Colorado expansion.

Colorado will mark the seventh state to be added to American Truck Simulator since its launch in 2016 - following on from Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Idaho - and opens up myriad new routes for long-distance haulers (and landscape oglers) to enjoy across SCS' own take on the Centennial State.

As with American Truck Simulator's other states, it's not an exact recreation, but rather an attempt to distill the essence of Colorado down into a space expansive enough to feel appropriately sweeping, but not so big it takes forever to go anywhere or achieve anything.

Video games are a small window into Chinese life, but they're a window nonetheless, and video games themselves, in China, are huge. China accounts for more than half of the entire planet's PC gaming revenue. In fact, despite it being smaller than mobile gaming there, China's PC gaming market alone made over $15bn in 2018; more than half the entire amount of revenue made in the US gaming industry overall, including consoles, mobile, the lot. Going by the numbers of analyst firm Niko Partners, as of 2018 there were a total of about 630 million gamers in China - a little over 8 percent of humans on the planet.

Huge. But we know there are lots of people in China, and we know lots of them play games. What's really interesting is that these people are playing games in what is, on paper, the most aggressively censored system around. I suspect this sort of thing is why economists love visiting China, even if doing so is a risk: everything is a case study.

Games are no different. Under Chinese law, video games can't contain anything that "threatens China's national unity, sovereignty, or territorial integrity". They can't harm "the nation's reputation, security or interests". They can't promote cults, or "superstitions". They can't "incite obscenity, drug use, violence or gambling" - although loot boxes are, of course, fine (in fact Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad reckons a Chinese game may have invented them as far back as 2003) - and they can't include anything that "harms public ethics" or China's "culture and traditions". They also can't include any "other content" that might violate China's constitution or law, whatever that may be, and they have to be published in China by a Chinese company.

Which radio station do you tune into? Is it Heart in the UK, or BBC Radio something or other? Is it Z100 in New York, or KIIS FM in Los Angeles? (I had to Google those.) Or, is it Truckers.FM?

I know what you're thinking: 'There's a whole radio station for truckers?!' But it's even stranger than that. It's actually a station devoted to virtual truckers, who tune-in via virtual cab radios while thundering down Truck Simulator roads.

In your ear, Truckers.FM sounds like the real thing. It has regular presenters with scheduled shows running right around the clock. There are adverts, just like on the real radio - there are even traffic reports! There are interviews, competitions, shout-outs - all the things you'd expect. Even jingles.

American Truck Simulator will hit the open road and head to New Mexico when its latest major expansion launches on Thursday, November 9th.

New Mexico is the second major expansion to release for American Truck Simulator, following on from last year's Arizona DLC. It brings with it over 4,000 miles of new road, 14 major cities - including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and everybody's favourite extraterrestrial hang-out Roswell - 11 unique rest stops and truck stops for a touch of added realism, and eight new company docks and industries.

Developer SCS Software also promises a wide variety of scenery to soak up on your travels, including urbanised areas, lush forests, mountains, sparsely populated trading posts, and isolated desert rest stops. It even has musical roads.
