What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a small team and have built Dream from the ground up over the past 2.5+ years without the aid of external commercial frameworks like Unity or Unreal. We are just now releasing Dream for the first time, and want to get feedback from users and community involvement to bring additional features to Dream that people would like to see.

So we feel early access would be a better way to get Dream out there to encourage users to reach out and give us feedback and thoughts, as well as to set their expectations. While Dream is a very polished piece of software (we've really tried to hold each detail up to the highest standard, made more difficult given it is a VR only offering), it is somewhat limited - and once we've buffed it up a bit per user feedback and use we could then make the switch over to non-early access.

Dream is being offered for free in early access, but we will continue to offer it as a free download once we get out of early access as well.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“We would like to stay in early access until we've had the ability to add a few more features and have confidence that we're providing a level of utility to a prospective user of the app. The amount of time we need to make this transition will largely be a function of the critical response from users to Dream, and the kind of feedback that we're getting - along side the schedule we're able to hit in terms of adding further functionality as it is requested from early users.

However, with that said - our goal is to get Dream out of Early Access by mid-2019 if not sooner.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will ideally have further features as a result of the early community feedback and response. Dream is intended as a tool to help people connect with one another and get things done together. We anticipate users will want further capabilities in this capacity.

For example, we already have a feel for a couple of features we intend to add. One is some form of "annotation" capability, so while in a session with another user that has brought up some content like a PDF - either user could annotate this content or mark it up in some way.

Another feature we're currently trying to crack is the ability to expose an in-VR virtual webcam that will be compatible with our web browser. This would allow people in Dream to use and communicate with non-VR users on things like Skype or Zoom, as well as stream directly into Twitch/Youtube to give a couple of examples.

Once we have filled out the docket a bit more, we would be ready to bring Dream out of early access. In the meantime, we'd really like to get hands on user feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The early access version is an end to end product and is 100% functional. We have no big outstanding bugs that we're aware of, and ensure 90 FPS in Vive on the minimum spec hardware that we designate even at a load of streaming a video and browsing a secondary page. Per the above, we've added more detail to the About This section, but to be a bit more specific these are the live features in the current build:

- Users can meet with up to 6 people in a Dream team. This includes real time head/hand positions as well as voice.

- Users can share a feed from the integrated Dream Browser, consisting of both video and audio that all other users in the session are able to see and hear.

- The Dream Browser deeply integrated with our platform and UI including a built for VR keyboard that can get to 30-40 WPM for most users.

- External account integrations for Google Drive, Dropbox, Youtube, and Plex which allow users to bring in content from these accounts without having to log in. Also, they can navigate their content in these accounts using our native VR UI to make it easier and faster to get to what they are looking for.

- 12 Avatars to choose from, currently one environment but we've got two more soon to be completed so it would be possible for users to choose between our semi-outdoor Cave, fully indoor A-Frame room, or fully outdoor plateau.

Dream is 100% VR - meaning that we do not ask the user to ever take their HMD off to do anything. All functionality and capabilities of our offering are available in VR, including login and account creation for example - and even connecting external content accounts like Dropbox and Google Drive!”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not intend to charge for Dream before or after release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We hope to involve the community in our development to the degree that they are interested in participating. We will always be reaching out and receptive to feedback, as our goal is to demonstrate that VR is a viable technology for communications and collaboration. We think that software like Dream could ultimately empower remote workers and remote teams in a way that traditional 2D software is not able to do.

We have already demonstrated our interest in community outreach and involvement by setting up accounts on Twitter, Instagram, a sub-Reddit, and Facebook page. Our support email address goes directly to our personal mailboxes, and we try to respond to ever comment/response that we get while that is still possible to do!”

About This Software

Unlike Anything Else.
Just Like You'd Expect.

Useful collaboration in Virtual Reality.

Dream makes it possible to meet and collaborate in virtual reality. Have a remote stand up with your team using Trello, or present a PDF from your Google Drive or Dropbox. Conduct a design review from the comfort of your home with people around the world, or simply watch YouTube together.

Features

  • Meet with up to 6 people in a Dream Team and collaborate with them in real time. Dream's custom built engine and stack allow for extremely low latency collaboration while sending data 90 frames per second (as fast as we can from the hardware, with no interpolation needed). The quality and fidelity really makes Dream feel like being in a space with someone else.

  • Utilize Dream's Browser which is based on Chromium and deeply integrated with our platform and UI. We've made sure that every bit of Dream can be used entirely in VR, including a first in class VR keyboard that is capable of 30-40 WPM after a bit of getting used to.

  • Federate external accounts like Google Drive and Dropbox to pull content from them directly into Dream. Bring in a PDF or Image, or bring up a video from your YouTube subscriptions or Plex account. The goal is to make bringing in the content you want to share easy and seamless.
