What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game engine is largely complete and the first two scenarios are playable. However we need help to validate the engine and get feedback and ideas for the onward development of the Final Release. Whilst the story design is largely decided, you never know where new ideas might take us!

Also, the more people we get involved during Early Access, the more polished and bug-free the final product will be.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approximately 8-10 months. We are working 7 days a week to deliver the Final Release asap and believe we can generate and test a new scenario on average every 2-4 weeks towards a planned total of 15+.

P.S. We = me and the wife.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There will be many more scenarios and a large number of additional units/spells and items. We plan to add new assets weekly which will also involve adding more spell and sound effects which are fairly generic at present.

We also intend to include Steam Trading Cards and Steam Achievements as soon as possible.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“You are able to create your hero and play through the first and second scenarios, as well as the Army Management system which is (normally) invoked between battles.

The Player Guides are currently a priority, the current state being:

  • Game Manual - in progress (weekly updates)
  • Bestiary - in development
  • Item Directory - complete
  • Spell Compendium - complete

Any number of campaigns can be run with different heroes and setup options if desired.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We plan to increase the price on Final Release and we may implement incremental increases during Early Access as the content grows.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are always open to feedback and constructive criticism. Our goal is to make the game as enjoyable as possible for both our players and us developers. We are making this game as it is the sort of game we love to play!

Our core game design is unlikely to change at this point, but we are always happy to consider adding new minor features that work well with our existing design. Any ideas/features we adopt will be mentioned in the game Credits (if desired by the player).

Please join us on the Steam boards.”

Version 0.079 Update

Hi Folks.

We uploaded the latest version to fix some issues:
  • Cannot complete Scenario 2 (A Dangerous Journey) even though all enemies are dead.
  • Prevent 'grinding' Scenario 2 by returning to the Campaign map.
  • Units on a Bridge had defense strength too high [reported in-house].
Please note that if you had the 'Cannot complete' problem above, you will need to restart the scenario by loading your last 'Army Management (yyyy-mm-dd hh.mm.ss)' file as, unfortunately, the problem occurred in-scenario and corrupted the saved files. Please let us know if it still gives you problems.

Sorry it took so long to fix, it was a tricky one!

All the Best.

Update: Issue with Scenario 2 (cannot complete it)

Hi All.

Not quite finished testing (we're rolling in a couple of other fixes as well). I'm afraid it's going to be tomorrow before we can release Version 0.079.

Thanks for your patience.

All the Best.

About This Game

The Qaedon Wars saga will tell the story of the people of Qaedon's fight to restore their world after the Great Cataclysm. This first episode The Story Begins will see your Hero start at Level 1 and begin the journey towards redemption for his/her world.

Loosely based on Dungeons and Dragons Open Game License (OGL) of Wizards of the Coast, the game provides a deep strategy and roleplaying experience as you build and progress your fantasy army through the single player campaign. The Story Begins delivers old-school gaming with hand-drawn 2D graphics throughout.

We have designed the game engine to be able to scale into future chapters of the saga where your hero and their troops can be imported into the next game. Expect to see your units at Level 20 by the end of the saga!

However each game will have its own discreet storyline and goals so that players can achieve victory in that particular chapter without playing any of the others.

  • Choose your hero and protect them throughout. If your hero dies it's game over!
  • Multiple battle scenarios (15+ planned), many with random objectives and enemies to increase replayability.
  • Varying mission types including Attack, Defend, Rescue, Capture, Escort.
  • Tactical turn-based battles on hex (overland) or square grids (underground).
  • Detailed army management between battles where you can improve your units' skills, get cures or buy new equipment (if you have the cash).
  • Hundreds of items for your units to loot.
  • Hundreds of spells for your Clerics and Mages to blast the enemy or help your troops.
  • Fill your coffers with Qaedi (the global currency) by looting your enemies and achieving mission objectives to finance your army operations.
  • Permanent death for units unless you can afford Resurrection!!
  • Dozens of options to customize gameplay.
  • Optional advanced rules to completely change the way you play, including Fog of War and Single or Split Movement.
  • Customize each unit in your army as they level up through combat experience.
  • Dozens of attributes for each unit covering their physical quality, abilities, movement and combat modifiers.
  • Equip your units with all manner of goodies using a variable inventory with up to 23 slots per unit.
  • Build spellbooks for your spellcasters from two Schools of Magic - Arcane and Divine.
  • Send your Warriors into the front line supported by your Archers, Clerics and Mages. Conduct sneak attacks with your Rogues.
  • Recruit single or multi class units like the Cleric/Mage.
  • Fight Giant Rats (can be quite nasty), Ulmug Orc Warriors (not very nice at all) and hundreds of other foes.
  • Deal with Traps and Persistent Spells like Wall of Flame.
  • Detailed In-Game Player Guides (Game Manual, Bestiary, Item Directory, Spell Compendium).
  • Help System for every spell, item and ability.
  • Customizable Tooltip System.
  • ...and so much more!
