What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“For those worried about game performance on their computers, PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE DEMO FIRST. I am a single developer and only have three machines for testing. The best way to see if the game will run on your system is to try the demo. If the demo plays well, the rest of the game should play well.

Even though Badminton Warrior is mainly complete, it is starting as an early access title for several reasons. The most important is that I want to receive feedback on the game in terms of design, difficulty, possible achievements, points of frustration, and what players like most about it. Constructive suggestions are always welcome because my hope is to make the game as good as possible for final release.

In addition to this, I would also like to get input on how Badminton Warrior runs on different systems. As stated before, I only have three computers that I can test it on at the moment. I have already found variations in how each handles the game, so it would be nice to have a wider sampling from multiple systems.

Finally, although I have play tested the game extensively, there are always bugs that pop up here and there that I can address before doing an official release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“At the moment, the game has a planned release schedule of Summer 2019. This date may change based on how long it takes to fix bugs and implement improvements suggested by the community.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current version does not have achievements built in, an end credit sequence, different playable characters, or any special power ups. Depending on the input of early access players, some of these will be added to the game. I have to see what is most important to the community. Because the early access version will be updated periodically, the full version should be the same as the final early access version.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All the level designs, enemies, and bosses are complete. A player can play through the whole game from beginning to end without a problem. There are sixteen levels total. There is also a tutorial level that the player can play through to learn the game. The stage select screen and menus are also complete. All the cutscenes are finished with the exception of the end title sequence. Audio levels can be set and the screen can be resized to whatever dimensions the player wants. For more information, please refer to the "About This" section as all the features listed have already been implemented.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Currently there is no plan to increase or decrease the normal retail price of this title before or after release. The title may be put on sale, though.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“For those who purchase the full early access game, I look forward to hearing their feedback and suggestions. If anybody comes up with a cool level idea, enemy, or boss, I will implement it if possible. Similarly, I will remove things if a large enough group finds certain aspects of the game too frustrating. I also plan to run contests where players can submit fan artwork that may be used in the game or on the store page. Because I am a single developer, the final credit sequence is pretty barren as of now. I may include some of the early access players into the credits if I feel they really put in a lot of effort towards making the game a success.”

Version 2.0 Released Now!

With the new year now upon us, I thought I would start it off with an update. Sorry this took so long, but I have also been working on a Chinese New Year update that I will give more details about later this month. Still, there were so many changes to this current update, Badminton Warrior is going all the way up to version 2.0! Two of the things players requested most were for more manageable boss battles and better indications of when enemies were going to attack. With that in mind, I made the following changes:

Version 2.0

• Added animations to multiple enemies so that they telegraph their attacks better. This includes the tennis launcher, shielded tennis launcher, fly boarder, and soccer cannon.

• Added animations to multiple bosses so that they telegraph their attacks better. For example, the hockey boss now will do a quick crouch before leaping into the air. Also added animations to bosses so players can more easily tell the difference between their various attacks.

• Made certain boss attacks slower to give players more time to react. This is especially helpful in the Lollol and Ticktocker boss fights.

• Changed the frequency of certain boss attacks so that the player has more opportunities to counter attack.

• Changed menu so that if player has defeated level one or above, it will automatically select the "Continue" button instead of the "Start New Game" button.

• Changed menu so that quitting out of the eight boss levels will bring player back to the stage select screen instead of the start screen.

• Fixed a camera positioning bug in the clocktower level.

As always if you find any bugs or problems, please report them in the report bugs section, and I'll do my best to fix them as soon as possible. I tested this version pretty thoroughly, but as a one man team it is hard to discover all the issues.

Let me know your thoughts on these changes. I rely on player feedback to determine what needs to be adjusted or fixed. Hope everyone has a happy new year!

About This Game

One fine morning, Ral, Mindy, AJ, and Jing go to play badminton when an evil being appears and kidnaps Mindy. Things seem pretty grim until a mysterious, old man named Lao Pi materializes and offers Ral an enchanted badminton racquet. He explains that the racquet can deflect any attack back at an enemy but cannot do direct damage by itself. Determined to rescue his friend, Ral embarks on a journey which will take him from the clouds in the sky to the depths of Hades.

Navigate through intense, heart pounding traps and obstacles. Discover new and interesting ways to defeat your enemies. Meet a crazy cast of characters including a hockey player who thinks he is a god, a lacrosse player running an insane asylum, and a basketball player who turns his trophy into an actual wife. Experience a storyline that pokes fun of sports figures, video games, and pop culture in general. Most importantly, become the greatest warrior of all time... a badminton warrior!

  • 2D action platforming with a unique game mechanic. You can clear, drive, and smash projectiles at your enemies, but your racquet cannot harm anything by itself.

  • Simple controls (just a swing and a jump button).

  • Traps and puzzles that require quick thinking and reflexes to overcome.

  • Sports themed levels with a variety of oddball enemies.

  • Some games claim to have "Awesome" gameplay. This game has "Awesomer" gameplay. Seriously, there is a character named Awesomer in the game.

  • Stage select screen that lets you decide in what order you want to play them.

  • 8 bit style music and sound effects.

  • An unapologetic sense of humor.

  • Non-epic bosses. Just kidding. Wanted to make sure you were still paying attention. (The boss battles can be hard but are enjoyable and rewarding as well.)
