What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“My background is in web development and this is my first time building a Virtual Reality app. I'd like to get feedback from users to make You Are Here more polished.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I don't anticipate this app being in Early Access for more than a year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Here is a list of features that I am thinking of adding to the full version:
  • Audio descriptions of different astronomical objects
  • A tutorial on how to use the controls to navigate around, interact with objects, and change the scale of the universe.
  • More options in the menu like showing/hiding the scale indicator cubes and star and galaxy labels.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The app currently lets the user teleport and walk (using an arm-swing mechanic) around a 100 x 100 meter plane. Users can also shrink and expand the universe. All of the stars and galaxies that will also be in the final version have already been added. The app is mostly just lacking various configuration options, audio narration, and a guided tutorial.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the final version will likely increase modestly from the early access price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I would like to get feedback like found bugs and feature suggestions from the community through the Steam Discussion board.”

About This Game

You are Here gives you the power to shrink and expand the universe. Take a journey from tiny quarks, atoms, cells, planets, stars, galaxies - all the way to the observable universe! This project has been heavily inspired by the classic 1977 Science film by Charles and Ray Eames, Powers of 10.

Data Sources

  • Star positions, colors, and magnitudes are from the HYG Database. The database is a subset of the data in three major catalogs: the Hipparcos Catalog, the Yale Bright Star Catalog (5th Edition), and the Gliese Catalog of Nearby Stars. There are 119,615 stars in the HYG Database.
  • The galaxies are from Data Release 14 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and describes the position and size of 755,649 galaxies.

Credits

  • Thank you Dr. Miguel Angel Aragon Calvo, Assistant Professor at the National Astronomical Observatory, UNAM for generously providing his galaxy data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
  • Thank you David Nash for your excellent HYG Database of stars.
