What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Atomic Rancher is a game made by fans and for fans! We've made the game chock-full of features we like, but what about the community? We are a small team and have put a TON of work into our game but to get us to the finish line we need community involvement and feedback! Gauging what features work and what ones need to be altered or even removed can be a large undertaking for an RPG - with Early Access we balance and tweak our game to perfection.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We believe with the communities support that we can complete the game within 4-6 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Our game is a farming game with a radioactive twist. Besides bug fixes and game balancing, the final version will have:
-Better NPCs
-A larger game world
-Expanded crafting
-character customization
-multiplayer (versus attack/defense)
-combat improvements
-electrical grids
-Friendship and marriage mechanics
-And whatever the community wants!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current state of our Early Access version is a stable Beta build. We have 10 crops across three different seasons that can be mutated with red, green, or blue slimes for multiple combinations. If players make it far enough they will experience two additional seasons, the Wet and Rad seasons. There is also a town with fully scripted NPCs, a number of items, some of which are from enemy drops, and farm defense elements. We also have a crafting system in place with several of the items placable on your farm.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game is discounted from its final price as we want to thank early supporters with a discount.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We think our game is great but the community will make it even better! We will be utilizing discord, facebook, twitter, and we also get great reception on reddit - really we're open to using any and every platform we can. So far our feedback has been very positive, if we can communicate with a wider audience we can incorporate feedback even faster!”

Mega Update

Welcome to the Mega Update. We have been hard at work trying to improve the stability of the game as well as fixing all of the bugs that have been reported. If you come across any new bugs please report them here.

New Features
  • Advanced planimals (megamals) can now be created in all three seasons by using a double dose of red slime on your crops.
  • We have added localization to multiple languages including Russian, German, French, Spanish, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. We will update the steam page to reflect this once we have made sure every aspect of the game has been translated.
  • A localization screen will show up first time launched after the update - once a language has been selected it should no longer popup every time you start the game. If you need to change the setting, there is a small globe button in the bottom left of the main menu.
  • A Water Pump recipe is now available from Professor Spark. It will need to be placed next to the water source to allow you to attach pipes for irrigation.

  • Reintroduced the NPC schedules after fixing a bug that was causing a game crash.
  • Destroying level 2 and 3 sprinklers now drop the appropriate pickup instead of always dropping the level 1 sprinkler.
  • Improvement to the mutant raids on your farm. Previously if your crops were completely enclosed by fences the AI wouldn’t be able to find a path to their target and tended to get stuck on the obstacles. Now they will find a path to the closest tile they can get to. Future updates will include them attacking fences.
  • Fixed an issue where harvesting an Eyefruit plant wouldn’t remove the plant object.
  • Increased the number of enemies that spawn in the outer maps. We felt that these areas were not dangerous enough to fit the aesthetic of the game and that increasing the number of them was a good way to increase difficulty without being punishing as the enemies are still slow enough for the player to outrun and avoid them.
  • Combat balancing. We have changed a lot of the health and damage values of the mutants, planimals and turrets to attempt to find a better balance.
  • Planimal AI fixes.
  • Can now hold down to mine/chop tiles in the wilderness. This change was made to make it more consistent with the tiles on the farm.
  • Fixed an issue that caused sprinklers to not work on the day after it rained.
  • Fixed an issue where sleeping after midnight would advance the calendar to the next day at 6am instead of the same day at 6am.
  • Changed the health value for the stumps left behind from trees from 2 hits to 3 hits. This makes them more accurately represent the other stumps in the game. This also fixes an unintended bug where if you destroyed the stump of the tree before the top part dropped its wood you would not get the wood from the top half.
  • Dying planimals wouldn’t clear the empty inventory slot saved for them. This inventory slot now clears correctly.
  • Fixes applied to the NPC pathfinding. They now correctly pause while the game is paused.
  • When the season changes the old crops will properly switch to the wilted state.
  • More fixes for using chests and the shipping crate.
  • Updated item values. Some items had ‘0’ values. These have now been changed so that all items that can be sold have actual values.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the inventory to break if items were moved around within the crafting menu. Thanks to I’M SPARTACUS on steam for helping to track down this issue.
  • Fixed an issue where after exiting certain buildings it would cause the enemies to no longer damage the player.
  • Level 2 and 3 sprinklers are now functional.

  • Fix for the door opening sound repeating if clicked.

  • Fix for harvesting plants not displaying the item sprite above the characters head.
  • Fix for fully grown brainkins to load in with incorrect sprites.
  • Updated cut scenes as some of the NPC’s weren’t being displayed in them.
  • Fixed Wooden, Stone and Scrap fences so they properly update their sprites when one is destroyed.
  • Nemo’s menu for building upgrades will always start at the far left of the list instead of in the middle.
  • Changes made to the percentage of the randomized ground tile to make the ground generally less cluttered.
  • Camera fix to remove the slight jittering on the character
  • Camera Bounds improved to match the edges of the map better.

  • Updated buttons on the map screen for a better user experience

  • Various planimal inventory fixes.
  • Fixed an issue where plants destroyed from raiding mutants weren’t being properly removed from the list of plants to update causing the black screen during sleep to remain on screen indefinitely.
  • Fixed localization issue causing Doc Marshall to have invalid dialogue.
  • Cut scene fixes for upgrading buildings.
  • Added a mail tip for day 9 that explains that not all combinations of slime and plant has positive effects. If it is not a valid combination it will create a Cronenberg. This can also happen if a plant mutation that needs a 3x3 space is created and it does not have enough space around it.
  • Believed fix for loaded games causing the player to have an inventory full of random items and not having use of items. Replicating this on our development machines had proved to be very difficult but we think we have finally solved this issue.
  • Decreased the cost of purchasing crafting recipes from Professor Spark to a fifth of the cost.

  • Fix for the crop discovery dialogue to no longer be dismissed by any input - and instead is dismissed by clicks or the a button - this is so that the dialogue will not be accidentally skipped if the player is trying to move.
  • Cassidy no Longer begins the game with all dry season crops in his shop. He starts with just the Mutato and other seeds have to be unlocked by exploration. At the start of each new season he adds that season’s base crop to his inventory as well.

About This Game

Atomic Rancher is a nuclear-fueled farming RPG that encourages players to grow, collect, and mutate their crops in order to survive.

A farming game with a twist! The world is recovering from atomic ruin, creating mutants and strange hybrids. Your father has found a sustainable water source and asked for your help to build a community from scratch.

Current Features
  • Farm with mutants! Use radioactive slimes to mutate the crops you grow on your farm. The color of slime you use on your crops (green, blue or red) determines what effect it has. If you feel like getting crazy, try combining different slimes on the same crops to see what happens! Be careful though, not all slime combinations have desirable results...

  • Collectible mutant companions! Some slimes mutate your crops into planimals! These little creatures are there to help you fight enemies and aid in quests. Can you discover them all?

  • Battle mutant hordes with defensive turret mutations! Crops can be upgraded by mutating them into defense turrets that fight enemies who try to eat your crops. By mutating your perimeter crops you can create a living wall of protection around your farm. Feel free to explore, take a nap, or talk to people around town all with the comfort of knowing your farm is protected while you’re away!

  • Three unique seasons: Dry, Wet and Rad! Strange weather and seasons shift what the player can grow. Experience the Dry season, a desolate and arid time where little grows. In the Wet season, life springs into action, and in the Rad season strange mutations dominate the land. Each season offers its own crops, planimals, and challenges.

  • Explore a vast wasteland. Much of the world is in ruins and only you can help rebuild what was lost. By venturing out into the great unknown you can find resources that you will need to make the world what it once was.

  • Build a community from scratch. Your father has called on you to help rebuild the only town around with fresh water. The buildings are pretty run down and could use a remodel (in some cases a total overhaul!). He will guide you in the right direction and allow you to upgrade buildings and even attract new friends to your community.

  • Craft dozens of items to build your farm! Take your farm to the next level by crafting artisanal items! Unlock the furnace, pickler, and more to turn your freshly harvested crops into products ready for market.

  • Level up your character and your companions. The bigger and better your farm is, and the more you upgrade the buildings in town the more opportunities you will have to upgrade your character's tools and everything else!

    Planned Features

  • Full controller support. Atomic Rancher will be completely playable with a mouse and keyboard, or with your XBOX controller at launch.

    • Memory: 256 MB RAM
