What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“10k development is currently a bootstrapped operation - a small team is responsible for creating 10k, so we're hoping that a friendly initial user base can help us work out the kinks and support continued development of new features.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“Anywhere from six months to two years, depending on how many people buy the Early Access version and/or if any external funding materializes.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of 10k includes basic functionality for creating VR experiences out of real data, with your creations tied to your Steam account. The full version will include more data types, more login types/API integrations (e.g. Google Poly sign in), fancier behaviors and visualizer styles, and more robust and easy-to-use UI controls, such as a more advanced color picker. The full version may also include support for viewing on AR or MR devices and/or the web.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, using an Oculus Rift CV1 or an HTC Vive, you can import 3D models (FBX and OBJ), protein crystal structures, neuron structures, financial time-series data, and photos/images, and place them around you, change their colors, names, and add some (very) basic animated effects. Next steps include support for static 3D backgrounds and more behaviors.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The base price will likely increase 2 - 3x, and we'll add a subscription option that lets you create private experiences.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'd love it if the community could help us out by reporting bugs and voting on our potential upcoming features.”

About This Software

Explore and build VR worlds using scientific data.

Make worlds of your own using real data along with free 3D models. 10k lets you create entirely in-world in VR, using open data sources - from 3D models and images to financial datasets to molecular structures.

10k is for anyone looking to

  • Prototype in 3D, all in-world
  • Communicate your ideas
  • Showcase 3D models
  • Mockup game environments
  • Explore and design systems
  • Create mind maps and org charts
  • Explore scientific discoveries

Using 10k, you can

  • Import, view, and position 3D models and images - either your own files or from Google Poly - all in-world, in VR
  • Seamlessly import and visualize scientific and financial datasets, including protein and molecule structures, neurons, and time-series data from Quandl
  • Customize colors, labels, descriptions, and add some basic ambient animations
  • Create rich visual experiences made of multiple scenes or environments

Currently, we support importing 3D models, protein crystal structures, time-series economic data, images (PNG and JPEG), and neuron cell structures Users can upload their own files, or instantly grab content from a variety of integrated APIs, including Google Poly, the Protein Data Bank, NeuroMorpho, and Quandl (economic data).

Background

Over the last 8 years, the Dynamoid team has been working on our internal tools for importing, processing, and visualizing a variety of datasets. This technology forms the core of the 10k platform, and includes data parsers, visualizers, shaders, and a behavior system. We're incredibly excited to see what other people want to create using the platform - it's the first time we've opened up any of our tools for other peope to use. Let us know how it goes!
