“An Early Access period of about a year is what I have in mind.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I am planning on adding more diversity to the different climates found in the world, like more small details (rocks, shrubs & bushes, etc.), different species of trees, and other terrain features. I would also like to allow more in-depth managing of your village, like different jobs for villagers, better infrastructure like faster transportation methods and better handling of Schematic building. Schematics are one of the first things I am planning on improving, such as allowing more than one villager to construct a Schematic at a time. A more refined combat system is also on my mind.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game currently supports an open (theoretically infinite), randomly-generated world with 3 different climates (Polar, Temperate & Desert), which alternate when moving either north or south. There is a basic variety of building blocks & materials to use for constructing a village, and the same goes for the tools. Right now it is only possible to have 3 villagers. The Schematic system allows for the creation of Schematics, which is like a user-created blueprint for a building/other structure. At night skeletons come and attack your villages at random intervals, while your villagers will defend with an automatic combat system.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I am planning on raising the price a little when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The priority of an addition to the game will be largely decided by you, the players, through online polls I am planning on hosting. By doing this, I can be sure that I am working on what you think is most important right now, may it be fixing a bug or implementing a specific feature. Online discussions will also help a lot with getting more insight in the player's thoughts about the game.”

Update v0.4: New World, New Sky

A new update is finally here, and with it comes many changes, such as new world generation. Mountains now generate in all climates, but more frequently in polar climates. Seas have also been added. Grass is now 3D and affected by wind, along with new flowers. Clouds now appear in the sky, along with stars at night. The sky can be seen reflected in water now.
A map has been added, which is automatically updated as you explore (can be opened by pressing 'M').
Food has also been added, although it is quite limited. Villagers can now grow oat, rice, wheat and potatoes, and eat them to restore health.

Full changelog below:
  • Added 4 crops that can be cultivated: Oat, Wheat, Rice & Potato.
  • Villagers can now eat food by dragging it from the Inventory, to the Villagers face in the Inspector.
  • Added new block: Pantry, used for storing food. Works in the same way as a Stockpile or a Jar.
  • A Village can now be named and a custom banner can be drawn. (Menu found in upper-right corner).
  • Added a map, updates automatically while exploring. Opened by pressing 'M'.
  • Added clouds.
  • Added waves and sky reflections to water.
  • Added 3D grass, which sways in the wind.
  • Added 2 flowers: Dandelion and Daisy.
  • Added stars at night.
  • Added 2 new Villager animation, one for when they are unable to complete an action, and another for when jumping down while walking.
  • Increased the maximum render distance drastically, allowing the player to see 960 meters into the horizon. Can be lowered if hardware is not capable of keeping up.
  • Added slider for setting UI Scale.
    [-] Villagers now longer regenerate health while sleeping.

Fixes:
  • Fixed snow sometimes now showing in polar climates.
  • Fixed not being able to store shovels in Jars.
  • Fixed fog showing in the Schematic Editor when it was not supposed to.
  • The game can now be paused while in Build Mode.
  • Fixed iron not generating properly.

New Update: v0.3

The Block Box v0.3 is now out, adding beds, clay bricks & tiles, sideways logs and new villagers moving in.

Full Changelog:
  • Added beds
  • Villagers regenerate health when sleeping
  • Time will pass much faster if all Villagers are sleeping at night
  • If there are more beds than Villagers, a new Villager will move in every sunrise.
  • Villager Skills are now fully implemented, with corresponding achievements for reaching max level.
  • Wood Logs can now be rotated sideways by using the scroll-wheel before placing them.
  • Iron now generates in stone, and in larger quantities in polar climates.
  • The sky is now light-gray when in a polar climate.
  • Skeletons now die when the sun rises.

About This Game

Build and defend your village in an open, randomly generated world made of blocks.

  • No predefined structures, you are free to use your imagination and design your structures as you like.


In The Block Box, you shape the world through the hands of your villagers. There are no predefined list of buildings that you must choose from, you can freely design your own. Use the Schematic Editor to design a structure, and your villagers can build it wherever you want afterwards. Multitasking is key in this game, as each villager can work independently, so you might have one villager collecting wood, while another digs for stone. In the first 3 days, you should focus on getting your villagers settled, and have some defenses built, as on the third night, skeletons will attack.


The world is randomly generated, with 3 different climate zones alternating through north and south. Temperate climates are full of grass, trees and water, while Desert climates are barren, with only oceans containing water. Polar climates consists of extreme mountains and snow, but iron is more abundant.
